At Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, the price of a B.Tech seat is decided by your rank, not by a fixed sticker. A strong score in the university's own entrance test pushes you into a lower fee category, so two students sitting in the same class can pay tuition that differs by more than a lakh a year. That same rank also decides the branch you are offered during online counselling. Below is the exact fee grid, how the VITEEE rank feeds into it, and where VIT Vellore genuinely stands on the national tables.

Overview

VIT Vellore is a private, self-financed deemed-to-be university on a single residential campus in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. It began in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, set up by the educationist and politician G. Viswanathan, and was granted deemed-university status in 2001 before taking the VIT name, as its public history records. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited VIT Vellore with a CGPA of 3.66 on the four-point scale, at the A++ grade, and the Association of Indian Universities recognises it as a deemed university.

Two things set the character of the place. First, engineering dominates: the bulk of intake is B.Tech, admitted through VIT's in-house entrance rather than a national counselling pool. Second, the academic model is the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS), which lets a student choose electives, pace and, within limits, the teaching slot and faculty for a course. VIT now runs campuses in Chennai, Amaravati and Bhopal too, but this page is about the original Vellore campus, which the others were modelled on.

Courses & Fees

B.Tech is the flagship, and its tuition is banded. VIT sorts applicants into six "scholarship categories" from Category 0 to Category 5: a top VITEEE rank earns Category 0, which is a full tuition waiver, while Category 5 is the full, no-scholarship fee. The exact annual tuition also depends on which programme group a branch falls into (Group A, B or C). The figures below are for the 2026-27 session.

Scholarship categoryGroup A (INR/year)Group B (INR/year)Group C (INR/year)
Category 1 (highest ranks)1,73,0001,95,0002,07,000
Category 22,32,0003,04,0002,66,000
Category 33,40,0004,02,0003,74,000
Category 43,65,0004,45,0003,99,000
Category 5 (no scholarship)3,95,0004,90,0004,29,000

Category 0 pays no tuition at all. On top of tuition, a one-time refundable caution deposit of 5,000 is collected with the first-year fee, per the same official fee schedule; hostel and mess charges are billed separately and are not part of the tuition above.

Admissions

Entry to B.Tech runs through the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE), a computer-based test the university sets and marks itself, so a JEE score does not admit you here. VITEEE covers Physics, Chemistry, and either Mathematics or Biology, along with English and an aptitude section, all pitched at the Class 12 syllabus, as the admissions pages describe. After results, shortlisted candidates enter an online counselling round.

Counselling is where the rank does its work. In rank order, a candidate picks a campus, then a programme, then the fee category they qualify for, and the seat is allotted from what is still open at their turn. A better rank means more branches and cheaper categories are still on the table; a lower rank means fewer of both. Once admitted, the FFCS lets a late developer rebuild a timetable term by term, which softens the sharp branch choices made on day one.

Cutoff

Do not go looking for a VIT Vellore closing-rank table, because one does not exist in the form students expect. VIT runs its own counselling rather than feeding into JoSAA, so there is no cross-institute cutoff to compare against. The one honest artifact VIT does give you is the slot-wise seat-allotment record from previous cycles, kept on its admission-results portal: it shows, branch by branch and campus by campus, which options were still open at which VITEEE ranks last year. That is what to read before counselling opens, rather than a headline "you need a top-few-thousand rank for Computer Science" claim that hides how much the threshold moves with seat availability each year. The admission guidance points to that portal and to the counselling schedule.

Placements

VIT reports its recruitment through a Career Development Centre tracker rather than a single glossy brochure figure. Its published placement data lists a highest package of 1 Crore, with more than 850 recruiting companies and over 14,000 offers. Read one caveat before you quote those numbers: the tracker pools all four VIT campuses, so the recruiter count and the offer total are not Vellore alone. The mix skews toward software, product and IT-services roles, which is what the CSE-heavy intake feeds. Treat the headline crore as the ceiling a handful of students reach, not the median a typical graduate should plan around; the offer volume is a fairer signal of how broadly the campus places.

Seat Matrix

There is no public, category-wise seat matrix for VIT Vellore of the kind that JoSAA or a state counselling authority publishes, because admission is a private in-house process. What is on the record is the total sanctioned intake VIT declared in its NIRF 2025 submission: 8190 approved seats for its four-year undergraduate (B.Tech) programmes, alongside 380 in five-year UG programmes, 1380 in three-year UG programmes, 2270 in two-year postgraduate programmes and 1410 in integrated PG programmes. Those are whole-institute figures, not a branch-by-branch or reservation-category split, which VIT does not release as a single notification. To see how those seats actually filled, the slot-wise allotment on VIT's admission-results portal is the closest thing; for a firm current-year count in one branch, the admissions office is the only reliable source.

Rankings

VIT Vellore is ranked across four National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 lists, and its strongest showing is on the university and research tables rather than the crowded overall one.

NIRF 2025 listRankScore

For a private, self-financed university, a place inside the top 16 on the engineering list and the top 14 on the university list is a strong result, driven partly by research output and graduation outcomes. The gap between its engineering rank and its overall rank simply reflects how many older, publicly funded multidisciplinary institutions crowd the combined table.

Departments

VIT organises teaching into schools rather than conventional departments, and the engineering schools are the centre of gravity. The academic schools include the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCOPE), the School of Computer Science Engineering and Information Systems (SCORE), the School of Electronics Engineering (SENSE), the School of Electrical Engineering (SELECT), the School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC), the School of Civil Engineering (SCE), the School of Chemical Engineering (SCHEME), and the School of Bio Sciences and Technology (SBST). Non-engineering schools cover advanced sciences, social sciences and languages, design, architecture, business and hotel management. That spread is why VIT ranks as a university and not only as an engineering college, though a first-year student's timetable is still built mostly inside one school.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The Vellore campus is a self-contained residential township on the outskirts of the city, dense with academic blocks, hostels and green cover rather than spread thin. The aerial and ground photographs in the gallery, taken from VIT's own infrastructure pages, show the flag mast at the centre, the tall teaching and residential towers, and the lake-side blocks that anchor the newer part of the site. Facilities that matter to an engineering cohort, the laboratories, the central library, sports grounds and the auditoria that host the annual fests, sit within walking distance of the hostels. Because everything is on one campus, most of student life happens inside the gate, which is a deliberate contrast to a city university split across scattered buildings.

Hostel

Housing at VIT Vellore is on-campus and separated into distinct men's and women's residential blocks, several of them high-rise towers named after historical figures, such as the Quaid-e-Millath Muhammed Ismail block visible in the campus photographs. Rooms range from shared to single occupancy, and the hostel and accommodation charges are billed on top of tuition and vary by room type and mess plan, which is why they are not folded into the fee grid above. Because the campus is residential by design, the large majority of full-time students live in these blocks rather than commuting, and hostel allotment is handled separately from academic admission.

Faculty

Teaching at VIT Vellore is delivered through its schools, and the FFCS gives the faculty structure a practical consequence for students: within a course, you can often choose the slot and the instructor, so a strong teacher's sections fill early. VIT declared 3352 faculty members in its NIRF 2025 submission, a large, engineering-weighted teaching body concentrated in schools like SCOPE, SENSE and SMEC. What that headcount does not capture is the research pull behind it, which is strong enough to carry the university onto the NIRF research list at rank 14, as the rankings above show, so a student picking electives under the FFCS is choosing from a faculty that is publishing, not only teaching.

Notable Alumni

VIT Vellore has a large and active alumni base, heavily represented in software, product and engineering roles at Indian and multinational firms, which is unsurprising given how much of the intake is computer science and allied branches. We are not publishing a named list here because the readily available roster runs to a secondary encyclopaedia entry, and our standing rule is not to name an individual on a secondary source alone. Prospective students weighing up outcomes get a truer signal from the placement tracker and the ranking record above than from a celebrity-alumni page anyway.

News & Articles

The most useful running record of what VIT Vellore is doing sits on the university's own news and campus pages rather than in third-party coverage. Recent activity has centred on industry tie-ups, with reported memoranda of understanding in the automotive sector, and on the chip-design and VLSI centres and workshops the electronics schools run through the year. For notifications that actually affect an applicant, VITEEE dates, counselling schedules and fee updates, the official admissions channel is the one to watch, since aggregator sites often lag the primary announcement by days.

College Compare

The comparison searchers ask most is VIT against an IIT, and the sharpest way to see it is through what a rank buys. At an IIT, a JEE Advanced rank buys a seat at a heavily subsidised, near-fixed fee; at VIT, your VITEEE rank buys two things at once, the branch and the scholarship category you pay, anywhere from a full Category 0 waiver to close to five lakh a year. That pricing-by-rank is VIT's own design, and it is why a VIT shortlist is really a rank-and-budget calculation rather than a straight prestige call. Against its nearer peers, the other private deemed universities on the VITEEE-style in-house-exam model, VIT is squarely in the pack but not at its front: on the same NIRF 2025 university table it sits behind Amrita and SRM, both of which rank higher. Where VIT still competes hard is placement breadth and the flexibility of the credit system, so the right shortlist swings on your rank: a rank that clears an older publicly funded institution changes the maths entirely, while a rank that does not makes VIT's fee category the number that matters.

Contact & Location

The Vellore campus sits on the western edge of Vellore city in Tamil Nadu, reached by rail through the Katpadi junction on the Chennai main line and by road from the Bengaluru highway. Undergraduate admission queries go to ugadmission@vit.ac.in, and the university's phone numbers, pin code and full postal address are published on its official website. Worth knowing before you book a train: the campus is nearer to Katpadi than to Vellore town itself, so Katpadi is the station to aim for.
