Jawaharlal Nehru Centre For Advanced Scientific Research, Banaglore
The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, usually shortened to JNCASR or JNC, sits in Jakkur on the northern side of Bengaluru and only teaches people who already hold a degree. Even its newest entry point, an Integrated BS (Research)-PhD launched for the 2026-27 year, asks for a three-year B.Sc. or 120 credits of a bachelor's programme. Everything else on its list is a PhD, a research master's, a taught M.Sc. or a one-year diploma.
Two name clashes trip applicants up. JNCASR has nothing to do with Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, a point its own admissions FAQ makes in one line. It is also a separate institution from the Indian Institute of Science, even though the Department of Science and Technology describes the two as closely linked since JNCASR's founding.
Overview
JNCASR is a government-founded research centre that is also a university. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) established it in 1989 to commemorate Jawaharlal Nehru's birth centenary, with C. N. R. Rao as its founding President and the physicist Raja Ramanna as the first Chairman of the registered society behind it (JNCASR overview). It remains an autonomous institution under DST, and it gained deemed-to-be-university status in 2002, according to its Status and Accreditation page, which adds that the UGC has since graded it a Category-I deemed university. The UGC's own consolidated list of universities enters it under Karnataka as a deemed university at its Jakkur campus address.
DST's profile of the Centre fills in the campus story. JNCASR is registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, and its main campus occupies a 22 acre plot gifted by the Government of Karnataka on the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway, about 11 km from IISc; the site became operational in July 1994 (DST institution profile). JNCASR still keeps a lecture hall, the JAWAHAR visitors' house, guest rooms and a small student hostel on the IISc campus.
Research is organised into Units rather than departments. The research units page currently lists Chemistry and Physics of Materials (CPMU), Engineering Mechanics (EMU), Evolutionary and Organismal Biology (EOBU), the Geosciences Unit, the International Centre for Materials Science (ICMS), Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBGU), New Chemistry (NCU), Neuroscience (NSU), the School of Advanced Materials (SAMAT) and Theoretical Sciences (TSU). Prof. Narayan K S is the Professor In-charge President, with five deans covering academic, corporate, faculty, fellowship and research affairs (President and Deans).
Not JNU, Not IISc, Not NCBS
Three Bengaluru and Delhi names get mixed up with JNCASR often enough to set out side by side.
| Name | Relationship to JNCASR |
|---|---|
| Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi | None; the JNCASR FAQ calls them independent entities |
| Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru | Separate institution; JNCASR runs a lecture hall and hostel on its campus |
| National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru | Separate; it is a centre of TIFR, where JNCASR students may be sent for specific courses |
Since its inception JNCASR has awarded 1,047 degrees, 579 of them PhDs, alongside 259 M.S. degrees from the Integrated PhD, 90 M.S. (Engg.) degrees, 40 M.Sc. Chemistry and 20 M.Sc. Inter-disciplinary Biosciences degrees (Degree and Diploma Programmes). The same page puts current enrolment at 431 students.
Courses & Fees
JNCASR offers seven kinds of programme, and every one of them expects at least a three-year bachelor's course behind the applicant. The table sets each one against its entry requirement and first-year tuition.
| Programme | Who can apply | Entry score used | Tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ph.D. | M.Sc. or M.E./M.Tech with 55%; 4-year bachelor's with 75%; MBBS/MD or B.VSc./M.VSc. in some Units | GATE, GPAT, or a JRF through CSIR-UGC NET, UGC NET, ICMR, DBT or INSPIRE (only desirable for M.E./M.Tech holders) | Rs 15,000 a year |
| M.S. (Engg.) | 4-year B.E./B.Tech/B.S. | Valid GATE score or NET-JRF | Rs 10,500 in the first year |
| M.S. (Research) | 4-year B.E./B.Tech/B.S., B.VSc./M.VSc. or MBBS/MD | Valid GATE score or NET-JRF | Rs 10,500 in the first year |
| Integrated B.S. (Research)-Ph.D. | 3-year B.Sc. or 120 credits, minimum 55% | JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters), CUET or the JNCASR entrance exam | Rs 7,500 a year |
| M.Sc. Chemistry (two years) | B.Sc. with Chemistry as a major, 55% | JAM or a JNCASR written exam | Rs 7,500 in the first year |
| M.Sc. Inter-disciplinary Biosciences (two years) | B.Sc. in biological science with Chemistry, 55% | JAM or an equivalent exam | Rs 7,500 in the first year |
| Postgraduate Diploma in Materials Science (one year) | M.Sc. in any branch of science | Application and interview | Rs 7,500 for the year |
Not every Unit takes every kind of student. The research degrees are split by Unit as shown below; ICMS offers only the materials science diploma, and the Biosciences M.Sc. is run jointly by MBGU, NSU and NCU.
| Unit | Ph.D. | M.S. (Engg.) | M.S. (Research) | M.Sc. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CPMU | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| EMU | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| EOBU | Yes | No | Yes | No |
| MBGU | Yes | No | Yes | Biosciences |
| NSU | Yes | No | Yes | Biosciences |
| NCU | Yes | Yes | No | Chemistry and Biosciences |
| TSU | Yes | Yes | No | No |
The older Integrated Ph.D., which gave an M.S. after about three years, now appears in the prospectus calendar only as a track for existing batches, and the programmes offered for 2026 list the BS (Research) route in its place (JNCASR Prospectus 2026).
The Bill Beyond Tuition
Tuition is the smaller part of what a new JNCASR research student pays at joining, because two refundable deposits come due at once. After the first year, Ph.D. tuition is charged at Rs 7,500 per semester and M.S. tuition at Rs 5,250 per semester (Ph.D. programmes).
| Fee head | Ph.D. | M.S. (Engg./Research) |
|---|---|---|
| Contributory Medical Scheme | Rs 1,800 per semester | Rs 1,800 per semester |
| Janatha Personal Accident Insurance | Rs 150 per semester | Rs 150 per semester |
| Other academic fees | Rs 3,700 a year | Rs 3,700 a year |
| Statutory and library deposit (refundable) | Rs 10,000 once | Rs 10,000 once |
| Mess deposit (refundable) | Rs 10,000 once | Rs 10,000 once |
| Thesis fee | Rs 5,000 | Rs 3,000 |
| Hostel room rent | Rs 675 single, Rs 575 double, per month | Same |
Every student must also hold a personal or family health insurance policy, even after joining the medical scheme. The prospectus states that tuition is completely waived for SC and ST students in all programmes (JNCASR Prospectus 2026).
Admissions
JNCASR admits through its own online application and an in-person interview, not through a common counselling portal. The main round is the August session, which takes students into every programme; Ph.D. and M.S. places are also filled in a mid-year round, while the Integrated BS (Research)-Ph.D. and both M.Sc. courses admit only once a year (JNCASR Prospectus 2026). A Class 12 student has no degree route in; the earliest a student can apply for a degree is in the final year of a B.Sc., as the prospective students page sets out year by year.
The August 2026 Session
Applications for the 2026-27 August session closed on 10.04.2026 (Admissions 2026-27 notice). Shortlisting for the research degrees weighs the national exam score and academic record, and some Units add an aptitude test or preliminary interview before the final one. The application fee is Rs 1000, non-refundable, with no gateway charge when paid by UPI (JNCASR Prospectus 2026).
The 2026 interview calls show how shortlisting worked in practice. Candidates for the Integrated BS (Research)-Ph.D. in Physical Science and Materials Science were shortlisted on either JAM or the JNCASR online entrance test and interviewed over three days, 18 May 2026 to 20 May 2026, with names but no scores published (Physical Science shortlist). The M.Sc. Inter-disciplinary Biosciences panel sat on 25 May 2026 and 26 May 2026 (Biosciences shortlist).
The FAQ describes the interview itself: a panel of typically four or five faculty members, questions kept to subjects the candidate has actually studied, and English as the normal language, with another Indian language possible if someone on the panel speaks it (JNCASR admissions FAQ).
The September 2026 Ph.D. Round
A second 2026 round is open as of mid-September, and it is narrower than the August session. It takes Ph.D. applicants only, and only those who have qualified the Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF or UGC NET for JRF, so a GATE score alone does not qualify for this round.
| Item | September 2026 round |
|---|---|
| Units taking students | CPMU, EMU, MBGU, NCU, NSU, TSU |
| Online applications open | 11.09.2026 |
| Last date to apply | 21.09.2026, 23:59 hours |
| Interviews | 24-25 September 2026 |
| Degree requirements completed by | 30.09.2026 |
| Certificates to be furnished by | 01 January 2027 |
| Application fee | Rs 1000 |
EOBU does not appear among the Units in this round. The notice links an application portal at jncasr-admissions.in (September 2026 announcement).
How the BS (Research)-Ph.D. Track Branches
The Integrated BS (Research)-Ph.D. is really a one-year bachelor's-level research year with a gate at the end. That first phase carries 40 credits, of which 20 are core courses, 8 are seminar, skill and minor courses and 12 are a research project, and each student gets a faculty mentor (JNCASR admissions FAQ).
What happens next depends on the cumulative CGPA across the three-year B.Sc. and the BS (Research) year:
- 7.5 or above: the student may apply for Ph.D. registration, subject to an interview, national fellowship eligibility and a vacancy (Integrated B.S. (Research)-Ph.D.).
- 6.0 to 7.4: no direct Ph.D. progression, but the student can complete a Master of Science (Research) and register for the Ph.D. after that (Integrated B.S. (Research)-Ph.D.).
- Below 6.0: the student may exit with whatever degree the Centre's norms allow.
The FAQ is blunt about money at the Ph.D. stage: a full fellowship needs a JRF from CSIR-UGC, DBT, ICMR or INSPIRE, with a Centre fellowship offered only in exceptional cases on merit and vacancy. The minimum Ph.D. duration is three years after registration, and M.S. dissertation work does not count toward the thesis (JNCASR admissions FAQ).
Summer and Project Programmes for Undergraduates
Four of the programmes on JNCASR's fellowships and extension list put undergraduates into its labs without enrolling them in a degree. Two of them, POCE and POBE, do end in a JNCASR diploma after three summers.
- Summer Research Fellowship Programme (SRFP): two months in a JNCASR lab for bachelor's and master's students in science, engineering, pharmacy, medicine, agriculture or veterinary science, at Rs 10,000 a month plus a sleeper-class train fare. Applicants need at least 65% in core subjects and in aggregate in Class 10 and 12, and the application fee is Rs 500 (SRFP page).
- Project Oriented Chemistry Education (POCE) and Project Oriented Biology Education (POBE): for first-year students of a three- or four-year science bachelor's, 6 to 8 weeks over three consecutive summers, up to ten fellowships each at Rs 10,000 a month, ending in a Diploma in Chemistry or Biology (POCE, POBE). Outstanding finishers become eligible for the Centre's MS-PhD admission, still subject to interview.
- North-East Summer Research Fellowship (NE-SRF): for students domiciled in the seven north-eastern states, placed for two months with a network of faculty mentors from those states; the 2026 deadline was 20th June 2026 (Fellowships and Extension Programmes).
- Graduate Research Internship Programme (GRIP): launched in 2021 for final-year B.E., B.Tech, M.Sc., BS-MS and MBBS students who want a long project under JNCASR supervision, open through the year.
SRFP is also the programme whose history the Centre counts in two different ways. The SRFP page says 2672 students have benefited since it began in 1991, while the Fellowships and Extension Programmes page says around 2500 since 1990 and adds that about 50 fellowships are offered from roughly 2000 applications a year.
Cutoff
JNCASR publishes no cutoff marks, closing ranks or qualifying scores for any programme. The admissions page says outright that meeting the eligibility criteria does not entitle an applicant to an interview, and that a committee shortlists on criteria set by each Unit (Admissions page).
What the Centre does publish are floors:
| Requirement | Published figure |
|---|---|
| Ph.D. after M.Sc., M.E. or M.Tech | 55% aggregate |
| Ph.D. after a 4-year bachelor's degree | 75% aggregate |
| BS (Research)-Ph.D. and both M.Sc. courses | 55% at the bachelor's level |
| Relaxation for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), PwD and EWS, September 2026 Ph.D. round | 5% of marks |
| SRFP | 65% in Class 10 and 12 core subjects |
Score validity is the other hard line. For the August 2026 session, a GATE, GPAT or NET-JRF certificate had to be valid as on 01 August 2026, and applicants coming through INSPIRE needed a valid provisional INSPIRE offer from DST by the interview stage (Ph.D. programmes).
Placements
JNCASR does not publish a placement report, but its NIRF data filings carry graduate outcomes for its master's-level programmes. In the batch-wise outcomes JNCASR filed for NIRF 2026, only one batch, the one-year PG class of 2022-23, sent more graduates into jobs than into further study.
| Programme length | Graduating year | Graduates | Placed | Median salary (Rs a year) | Higher studies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two-year PG | 2024-25 | 64 | 9 | 385333 | 31 |
| Two-year PG | 2023-24 | 24 | 2 | 271320 | 21 |
| Two-year PG | 2022-23 | 24 | 3 | 360000 | 18 |
| One-year PG | 2024-25 | 11 | 3 | 420000 | 4 |
| One-year PG | 2023-24 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 5 |
| One-year PG | 2022-23 | 5 | 2 | 270000 | 1 |
The filing does not name the programmes behind these rows, and with so few people placed each year, a median salary rests on a handful of offers. The same submission counts 307 full-time Ph.D. students and Ph.D. graduations of 37 in 2024-25, 44 in 2023-24 and 59 in 2022-23 (NIRF 2026 data submission). Those doctoral counts do not match the previous year's filing, which gave 58 for 2023-24 and 56 for 2022-23 (NIRF 2025 data submission), so treat any single year's figure with care.
The Centre points to where its alumni ended up instead of salaries: faculty posts at IITs, IISERs, IISc and IACS, positions at the University of Manchester and the US National Institutes of Health, and jobs at Airbus, General Electric and Samsung (Degree and Diploma Programmes). The admissions FAQ points applicants to a PAIRs page for alumni details (JNCASR admissions FAQ), and the prospectus lists Prof. Kanishka Biswas as faculty in-charge of placement, alumni and international relations (JNCASR Prospectus 2026).
Seat Matrix
JNCASR publishes intake ceilings rather than a seat matrix, and it gives no category-wise breakdown of seats for any programme. The prospectus caps each route as follows.
| Programme | Approved intake |
|---|---|
| Ph.D. | Maximum 8 per faculty member, as per vacancy |
| Integrated B.S. (Research)-Ph.D. | Maximum 40 |
| Master's programmes | Maximum 50 |
For 2024-25, JNCASR told NIRF it had 92 sanctioned places across its two-year PG programmes and 12 across one-year ones (NIRF 2026 data submission). It also lists a three-year "UG" line with an intake of 16 and 41 students on the rolls, whose 2024-25 batch of 9 all went on to higher studies. The filing does not say which programme that line covers, and JNCASR's admissions pages list no bachelor's degree open to school leavers, so do not read it as a Class 12 entry route.
Rankings
NIRF places JNCASR in its Research Institutions category, and the Centre has dropped in that list every year from 2023 to 2025. It did not appear in NIRF's Overall or University lists in 2025.
| NIRF year | Research rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 44 | 46.57 |
| 2024 | 34 | 50.06 |
| 2023 | 30 | 51.08 |
Perception is the parameter pulling the score down. It fell from 36.87 in 2024 to 24.19 in 2025, quality of research slipped from 37.27 to 34.38 and quantity of research from 67.83 to 62.99, while outreach and inclusivity improved from 55.91 to 58.35 (NIRF 2024 Research, NIRF 2025 Research).
| NIRF 2025 parameter | Score (out of 100) |
|---|---|
| Quantity of research (QNR) | 62.99 |
| Quality of research (QLR) | 34.38 |
| Student and faculty count (SFC) | 45.45 |
| Outreach and inclusivity (OI) | 58.35 |
| Perception | 24.19 |
The earlier record looks very different. JNCASR's status page lists 4th among universities and 11th overall in NIRF 2017, a "Special Mention" in 2018 and 19th in the Research category in 2021 (Status and Accreditation). The same page reports that the Nature Index 2025 tables placed it 14th among Indian academic institutions, with 9th in biological sciences, 11th in physical sciences and 12th in chemistry.
Departments
Facilities & Infrastructure
JNCASR's shared research infrastructure reaches well beyond Jakkur. Since 2020 the Centre has been a node of the National Supercomputing Mission and hosts PARAM Yukti, a system of 166 nodes offering 1.8 petaflops of combined CPU and GPU compute, shared with outside users and nearby institutes (National Supercomputing Mission at JNCASR). JNCASR also coordinates Indian researchers' use of the PETRA III synchrotron in Hamburg under the India@DESY partnership, supported by the DST Nano Mission with 758 days of beamtime proposed over 5 years, and of the Photon Factory at KEK in Japan (Synchrotron access).
On campus, the facilities page lists a computer lab, library, workshop, animal house, gym, dining hall and the Dhanvantari clinic; students have access to on-campus doctors, physiotherapists and counsellors (Ph.D. programmes). A day care centre for staff children has run since June 2010 and takes children aged 1 to 10 (Day Care Centre).
Hostel
The main hostel is the Student's Residence on the Jakkur campus, which has single and double rooms, its own mess and store, laundry and kitchenettes booked in advance, and a gym with table tennis and badminton (Student's Residence). The FAQ counts 195 rooms at Jakkur, with separate floors for men and women, accommodation for married students, and a monthly mess bill divided among the boarders (JNCASR admissions FAQ). Room rent is Rs 675 a month for a single and Rs 575 for a double, and places depend on availability (Ph.D. programmes).
A second, much smaller hostel sits on the IISc Gymkhana campus. The Jawahar Students Hostel has 15 rooms meant mainly for visiting students, charged to JNCASR students at Rs 100 per day per head (Jawahar Students Hostel).
Hostel
Faculty
JNCASR's 2026 prospectus lists its faculty Unit by Unit, numbered from 1 to 49, and every entry holds a Ph.D. (JNCASR Prospectus 2026). That list puts New Chemistry and Chemistry and Physics of Materials at the head of the count, with Neuroscience and Evolutionary and Organismal Biology among the smallest Units.
The Unit chairs named there are Tapas Kumar Maji (CPMU), Meheboob Alam (EMU), T. N. C. Vidya (EOBU), Ravi Manjithaya (MBGU and NSU), T. Govindaraju (NCU) and Subir Kumar Das (TSU). The prospectus still lists Umesh V. Waghmare as Professor and President. A JNCASR announcement of 2 July 2026 says he is taking charge as Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (JNCASR announcement), and the leadership page now shows Narayan K S as Professor In-charge President (President and Deans).
The NIRF 2026 filing adds a layer the prospectus leaves out. Alongside the regular faculty, it lists senior scientists under an "Other" association type, among them A. K. Sood, P. Balaram, Gagandeep Kang, Raghavendra Gadagkar and D. D. Sarma (NIRF 2026 data submission). Applicants should not assume these names take Ph.D. students; the Unit pages are the place to confirm who is supervising.

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
JNCASR's website still advertises a NAAC grade of A++ with a score of 3.76 out of 4, awarded in 2016 (Status and Accreditation). That grade does not look current. In its NIRF 2026 data submission, the Centre answered NO to the question of whether it holds a valid NAAC accreditation (NIRF 2026 data submission), and JNCASR is not among the universities on NAAC's downloadable list of institutions with valid accreditation as on 14-08-2025, linked from the NAAC accreditation status page.
Its degree-awarding authority does not depend on NAAC. The Degree and Diploma Programmes page ties that power to the UGC's 2002 deemed-to-be-university recognition, and the Centre's status page describes a later grading as a Category-I deemed university, which brings the extra autonomy that UGC regulations allow such universities.
Aid
Scholarships
At JNCASR the money follows the programme, and the taught master's students get none. Research students are paid from JNCASR, CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT or INSPIRE funds depending on how they entered.
| Programme | Monthly support |
|---|---|
| Ph.D., first two years (JRF) | Rs 37,000 |
| Ph.D., next three years (SRF) | Rs 42,000 |
| M.S. (Research) and M.S. (Engg.) | Rs 37,000 |
| BS (Research) year of the integrated programme | None |
| M.Sc. Chemistry and M.Sc. Inter-disciplinary Biosciences | None |
| SRFP, POCE and POBE fellows | Rs 10,000 |
The prospectus says a stipend is paid "as per norms" on the diploma in materials science, but gives no amount for it (JNCASR Prospectus 2026). Conference travel is funded separately: up to Rs 1,00,000 for a Ph.D. student and up to Rs 40,000 for an M.S. student, under the Centre's norms (Ph.D. programmes). Separately, SC and ST students have their tuition waived in full whichever programme they join.

Student Reviews
No independent, verified student reviews of JNCASR are available to show, and we found no student satisfaction survey from the Centre. What jncasr.ac.in does carry is curated: the Campus Life page quotes named students from TSU, CPMU, ICMS, MBGU and EMU on the Jakkur campus, the hostel, the Friday movie club and daily contact with advisers, and the admissions FAQ quotes an unnamed Ph.D. student on the "free and frank" relationship with faculty. The Centre picked those voices, so read them as its own account rather than as reviews.
The FAQ does record some practical conditions a reviewer would care about: laboratories are open 24 hours a day, researchers hold keys to their own labs, and each Unit runs about 30 seminars a year (JNCASR admissions FAQ). The NIRF perception score of 24.19 in 2025 measures reputation among peers and employers, not student experience (NIRF 2025 Research).
Campus
Gallery
JNCASR's website has no dedicated photo gallery. The Fellowships and Extension Programmes section carries a gallery tab, but it currently says only that content will be available (Fellowships and Extension Programmes). The official photographs that do exist sit on the Campus Life page, a set of five images that includes students gathered round a table under an open, tile-roofed gazebo on a campus lawn.
