National Institute Of Technology, Patna
NIT Patna is the rare engineering school whose strongest national result is not in engineering. On the government's 2025 framework it ranks 53rd among engineering institutes yet 13th in architecture, a placing few National Institutes of Technology reach. It is also unusual in another way: most of its B.Tech students are Bihar's own, the reverse of the out-of-state mix at newer NITs. What follows pins the fee, the branch admission route, the cutoff mechanism and the placement record to sources you can open yourself, and it keeps NIT Patna apart from the separate IIT Patna that shares the city.
Overview
The institute dates itself to 1886, a lineage its own record calls the 6th oldest in Indian engineering, and for most of the century since it was known as Bihar College of Engineering before taking National Institute of Technology status in 2004. Under the National Institutes of Technology Act of 2007 it became an Institute of National Importance answering directly to the Ministry of Education, which puts its degrees and its admission rules on a central footing rather than a state one.
Geography has shaped it more than most campuses. The main site is a compact 36 acres on Ashok Rajpath, pressed against the southern bank of the Ganges opposite the point where the Gandak meets it, next to Gandhi Ghat, per the same record. With the river on one side and the city on the other, a second campus of 125 acres has been assigned at Sikandarpur village in Bihta, around 40 km away, to give the institute room it cannot find downtown. Who studies there is the detail worth noting first: the NIRF 2025 engineering data return records 2,890 undergraduates, 1,719 of them from within Bihar and 1,154 from other states, and that home-state majority changes how a seat here is contested.
Courses & Fees
The flagship is the four-year B.Tech, taught across five branches, computer science, civil, electrical, electronics and communication, and mechanical engineering, as the institute's own admissions page lists. The architecture and planning department also runs the five-year B.Arch, and beyond the flagship the institute teaches two-year M.Tech and M.Arch streams, an MCA, and a large doctoral cohort.
Tuition is a national NIT figure, not a Patna one. The published fee summary sets B.Tech tuition at Rs 1,25,000 a year, or Rs 62,500 a semester, and it is means-tested hard: a family earning below roughly Rs 1,00,000 a year pays no tuition, and one in the Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 5,00,000 band pays a reduced slice, so declared income and category swing the real cost well past what the headline implies. A hostel place adds about Rs 14,000 a semester for rent and upkeep, with mess charged on its own at close to Rs 20,000 a semester.
| Fee head (B.Tech) | Amount | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition, per year | Rs 1,25,000 | National NIT rate, General category |
| Tuition, per semester | Rs 62,500 | Half the annual figure |
| Hostel rent and upkeep, per semester | Rs 14,000 | Excludes mess |
| Mess, per semester | Rs 20,000 | Charged by the hostel |
Totals diverge for a reason worth knowing before you compare quotes. A General-category student's academic bill across four years lands near Rs 6,11,900 on the same fee summary, and near Rs 8,89,900 once four years of hostel and mess are added, which is why one prospectus lists a six-lakh figure and another almost nine. The number that actually binds is the itemised sheet on the institute's own fee page, and a student holding a tuition remission pays a fraction of the General total.
Admissions
Getting into the B.Tech runs through a single test, JEE Main, held by the National Testing Agency, and the score that matters afterwards is the All India Rank fed into JoSAA counselling. NIT Patna's undergraduate seats are allotted in that same national round as the IITs, IIITs and other GFTIs, from one ordered list of choices, with no separate entrance exam, interview or paid quota bolted onto the degree. A JEE Advanced score, which the IITs need, does nothing here, and seats still open after JoSAA move into the CSAB special rounds.
Domicile is where Patna admissions get specific. Every branch is halved: one half is a home-state quota for candidates who passed Class 12 in Bihar, the other is a national pool open to everyone, and a candidate competes only within the half they fall in. Within each half the national reservation categories apply in turn, OPEN, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST and PwD, and a block of women-only supernumerary seats is created above that count rather than carved out of it. Because Bihar sends so many qualified candidates, the home-state half is not a soft entry; it is contested in its own right. For the five-year B.Arch the qualifying test switches to JEE Main Paper 2, the architecture paper rather than the engineering one, and the M.Tech, M.Arch, MCA and doctoral seats each run on their own national entrance, GATE for the master's engineering degrees, none of them set by the institute itself.
Cutoff
There is no cutoff published ahead of counselling. A closing rank is simply the last All India Rank an allotment round still reached for a particular branch, quota and category, settled only when the rounds end, so the figure that guides a decision is this year's, never one lifted from a previous cycle.
What makes Patna's cutoffs read differently from most NITs is the domicile balance. The NIRF 2025 return counts 1,719 of the 2,890 undergraduates as Bihar residents, so the home-state half is filled by a large and competitive local field rather than clearing at a loose rank the way a thinly populated state's quota can. A candidate applying from outside Bihar sits in the national half, where computer science shuts first and the core branches, civil and mechanical, stay open to much wider ranks. For the exact rank that decides your own branch, quota and category, the only trustworthy figure is the live JoSAA opening and closing rank data for the current round, because that is where the number is actually set.
Placements
The placement return NIT Patna files with NIRF is best read as median salary and placed-count together, and read that way the recent direction is down, not up. The 2023-24 B.Tech median sits at Rs 7,00,000 in the NIRF 2025 engineering return, a step down from Rs 9,88,000 the year before and Rs 10,00,000 the year before that, and only 591 of the 738 who finished in stipulated time found a job.
| B.Tech placement (NIRF 2025 return) | 2021-22 | 2022-23 | 2023-24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduates in the stipulated time | 550 | 626 | 738 |
| Placed | 512 | 601 | 591 |
| Higher studies | 32 | 17 | 51 |
| Median salary | Rs 10,00,000 | Rs 9,88,000 | Rs 7,00,000 |
The pattern under the median is the part to weigh. The same return shows the placed count barely moving, from 601 for 2022-23 to 591 for 2023-24, while the graduating class swelled to 738, so a larger slice of the batch went unplaced or into further study rather than into a job. The postgraduate side is thinner again, that return recording a two-year master's median of Rs 6,80,000 for 2023-24 with only 21 of 121 graduates placed, so a PG applicant should plan on building an outcome rather than inheriting one.
Seat Matrix
The count that governs a choice is the live JoSAA seat matrix, redrawn branch by branch and category by category every admission year. As a rough measure of scale, the NIRF 2025 engineering return records a sanctioned B.Tech intake of 746 for 2023-24 across the five branches, with a two-year postgraduate intake of 265, and the architecture return adds a five-year B.Arch intake of 47. Each of those figures is halved between the Bihar and national pools before category reservations and the women-only seats are applied, and any seat added or dropped this cycle appears first in the current matrix, not in an old total.
Rankings
NIT Patna's best 2025 showing is in architecture rather than engineering. Its architecture programme places 13th nationally on the NIRF 2025 architecture list with a score of 60.16, standing among the country's stronger architecture schools and clearly ahead of where its engineering wing lands. On the engineering table that most B.Tech applicants track, it comes 53rd with a score of 53.89 on the NIRF 2025 engineering ranking.
| NIRF 2025 category | Rank | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | 13 | 60.16 |
| Engineering | 53 | 53.89 |
The distance between the two ranks repays a closer look. On the engineering ranking its perception component scores just 6.35, the weakest of its five sub-scores, while its graduation-outcome and teaching-and-learning components score far higher, so 53rd place says more about reputation and research pull than about the teaching a student actually receives. The architecture result is the true standout and the figure a B.Arch candidate should read before any other.
Departments
Ten departments carry the teaching, and the spread is wider than the engineering name suggests. The engineering departments, computer science, civil, electrical, electronics and communication, and mechanical, sit beside a department of architecture and planning and the science and humanities departments of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and humanities and social sciences, per the institute record. Architecture and planning is the one to flag, since it holds the 13th-place national standing this page keeps returning to, and a B.Arch entrant is in effect picking that department over the wider institute.
Facilities & Infrastructure
Academic blocks, laboratories and the central library share the 36-acre riverside plot on Ashok Rajpath, a close-packed campus rather than a rambling one, which is much of the reason the Bihta land was assigned. The central library holds roughly 150,000 books and 1,100 e-journals, and a computer centre, a student activity centre and a medical centre round out the rest of campus provision. Since the institute publishes no single itemised facilities booklet, the departmental laboratories a branch choice really turns on are best confirmed on its own academic pages.
Hostel
Most undergraduates are resident, and a hostel place is billed on top of the academic fee. The published fee summary sets hostel rent and upkeep at about Rs 14,000 a semester, with mess run separately by each hostel at close to Rs 20,000. The blocks take their names from the region's rivers, Sone, Kosi, Bagmati and Brahmaputra for the men and Ganga for the women, as the institute record sets out. A room in one of the river-named blocks is assigned by the hostel office only after a JoSAA seat is locked, a step apart from winning the seat itself, so a first-year counting on residence should confirm the live rent and availability on the institute's hostel pages before treating a place as given.
Faculty
The most reliable way to gauge teaching strength is department by department, since a branch choice is really a decision about who will teach you. The NIRF 2025 return enters 173 faculty members across the departments, and it records a heavy doctoral presence alongside them, 333 full-time PhD scholars and 1,009 part-time ones, so a good share of senior staff sit on research committees as well as teach. That institute-wide count says nothing about the branch you actually join, so the staff and research pages of your own department, the large computer science group or the far smaller architecture and planning faculty, carry more signal than any single headcount.
Notable Alumni
Public-record graduates of NIT Patna gather in politics, engineering and public science more than in industry. The name a general reader knows best is Nitish Kumar, Bihar's long-serving Chief Minister, an engineering graduate here, per the institute record; the same source lists Bindeshwari Dubey, an earlier Chief Minister of Bihar, Ratan Kumar Sinha, once Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, the aeronautical scientist Manas Bihari Verma, and Raja Ram Singh Kushwaha, a member of the Lok Sabha. Each of these names is drawn from the institute's own record; the far longer alumni rosters on aggregator sites blur the line, folding in figures whose tie to the old Bihar College of Engineering cannot be verified, and those are left off here.
News & Articles
This page carries no dated notice on purpose. NIT Patna posts its JoSAA reporting dates, CSAB special-round calls and revised fee slabs to its own notice board across the admission season, and a date pinned here would fall out of step with that board within weeks. When a deadline or a fee actually governs a decision, take it from nitp.ac.in rather than any fixed copy.
College Compare
The most valuable comparison for Patna is the one applicants most often get wrong. IIT Patna and NIT Patna are two distinct institutes in the same city, and on the NIRF 2025 engineering ranking IIT Patna stands 19th with a score of 64.52 while NIT Patna stands 53rd, so the older name is not the higher-ranked one and a JoSAA list must enter them as the separate options they are. Set against its peers, a 53rd engineering place leaves NIT Patna in the middle of the NIT system, below the senior campuses at Tiruchirappalli, Surathkal and Warangal. Architecture reverses the picture: a 13th national place there is a distinction several higher-ranked NITs lack, so a B.Arch aspirant should read Patna as far stronger than its engineering rank alone would say.
Contact & Location
Anything that has to be exact, the current fee slab, the seat count for a branch, the papers a JoSAA candidate must bring, is worth taking from nitp.ac.in or the admission office directly, since a third-party listing can lag the institute's own notice board by a full cycle.
