Kumaun University, Nainital

Nainital, Uttarakhand Est. 1973 Official site Updated
NIRF Pharmacy
#73

Search for Kumaun University Nainital admission and you land on a scatter of different web addresses, and which one will take your form depends on whether you want a bachelor's degree, a master's or a Ph.D. The figure most often quoted about this university, around 1,50,000 students, is its own system-wide count across scores of affiliated colleges, not a roll call of the two campuses it teaches on. Its single national ranking, 73rd in pharmacy, was earned by one department on a different hill, at Bhimtal. And the institution shrank in 2020, so a good deal of what is still printed about it describes a larger university than the one you would be joining.

Overview

Kumaun University is a state university with its administrative seat at Sleepy Hollow, Nainital, and it describes itself as a residential-cum-affiliating university. Both halves of that phrase do real work here, and most of the confusion about its numbers comes from mixing them up.

The university came into existence in the year 1973 by notification No. (10)/8651/15/75(85)/64 dated 23 November, 1973 under the Act No. 10 of State Legislature (U.P. State Universities Act, 1973 now adopted by Uttarakhand State), with the merger of two Government Colleges, D.S.B. Government P.G. College, Nainital and Almora Government P.G. College, Almora. It was founded under Uttar Pradesh law, because Uttarakhand did not yet exist. Those two colleges were elevated to the status of University Campuses by Government order No. E-1861/GS dated 14/15 March, 1994.

Half of that founding pair is gone. The State Legislature passed the SSJ University Act, Act No. 20 of 2019, which bifurcated Kumaun University and established SSJ University Almora, announced by the Uttarakhand Government on 22nd June 2020 through Order No. 168/XXXVI (3) 2020/ 771/ 2019. The Almora campus and the colleges in that belt went with it. What remains under this name are the campuses at D.S.B., Nainital and Sir J C Bose at Bhimtal, covering an area of approximately 160 acres.

The affiliated side dwarfs the campuses, and that is where the headline student figure comes from. The university writes that with affiliations to 20 government colleges, 61 private institutions, and a government-aided college, the university supports around 1,50,000 students, making it Uttarakhand's largest. Read that as a system-wide total rather than a campus roll: the pharmacy department at Bhimtal, the only unit here whose student numbers reach a national ranking table, accounts for 182 undergraduates and 67 postgraduates. The affiliated colleges sit in Haldwani, Ramnagar, Kashipur, Rudrapur, Bazpur, Khatima and Tanakpur, and a B.A. taught at any of them carries a Kumaun University degree and none of the Nainital campus figures on this page.

The university's home page names Lt Gen (Rt) Gurmit Singh as Chancellor and Prof. Navin Chandra Lohani as Vice Chancellor. Day to day, though, each campus has its own head, and those are the names on the notices you will be reading: Prof. Sanjay Pant directs D.S.B. Campus, Nainital and Prof. L.K. Singh directs Sir J.C. Bose Technical Campus, Bhimtal.

Courses & Fees

The teaching splits cleanly by campus, and knowing which one your subject lives on saves a wasted trip up the hill. D.S.B. Campus at Ayarpatta in Nainital carries the general and professional degrees: the university describes a total of 29 courses there across science, arts, management, commerce, mass communications, medical, law, pharmacy and computer applications. Its departmental spread runs from economics, history, Hindi, Sanskrit, geography and psychology through botany, zoology, geology, physics, chemistry and statistics, with the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Law Institute and newer units in forensic science and biomedical sciences alongside them.

Bhimtal is the technical half. Sir J.C. Bose Technical Campus was founded in 1997 and runs BBM and BMS, MBA, M.Sc., B.Pharm and M.Pharm programmes, and the biotechnology department the state portal lists as a campus rather than a college sits there too.

Pharmacy is the campus programme with the longest record. The department started as an undergraduate course in 1997 with a temporary setup at the Chemistry PG Block in Nainital and moved to Bhimtal in October 2004, and now offers a four-year B.Pharm, a Ph.D., and M.Pharm in four disciplines, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacognosy.

The university does publish its own catalogues, but only for the two campuses and only behind the Courses/Programms link on the campus page, as Hindi PDFs set in a legacy Krutidev font that a search engine cannot index and a browser will not always render. The D.S.B. document lays out the B.A. subject combinations department by department; the Bhimtal one adds the detail the campus page omits, including an MBA Integrated of 5 years alongside the MBA of 2 years. For the affiliated colleges there is no university catalogue at all. The state's undergraduate admission portal, filtered to this university, returns 222 programme entries under Kumaun University Nainital for the 2026-27 session, and it covers both sides of the house: the university's own units, among them D.S.B. Campus, the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Law Institute, the biotechnology and management departments and the Community College at Bhimtal, sit in the same list as the affiliated colleges, each entry naming the institution that teaches it. Read it before you settle on a college. The same B.Com. specialisations in tax planning and in banking and finance repeat across private colleges in Rudrapur and Kashipur, while a diploma in eco tourism appears at the government college in Ramnagar and nowhere else on the list.

Fees are the gap. The university's fee-structure download is an examination fee schedule, not a tuition table, and it is posted as a scan. Admission and examination payments are collected through the university's own fee capture system rather than published as a rate card, and the state admission portal's programme pages carry eligibility rather than price. There is no consolidated programme-wise tuition list for the campuses or for the affiliated colleges. Ask the campus director's office at Nainital or Bhimtal for a campus programme, and the individual college office for an affiliated one, and get the figure in writing before you pay.

Admissions

The application does not start on the university's website. Undergraduate admission runs through the Uttarakhand State Higher Education Admission Portal, which the Department of Higher Education describes as covering all UG programmes in Uttarakhand State Universities, naming Kumaun University Nainital, Soban Singh Jeena University Almora and Sridev Suman Uttarakhand University Badshahithol, Tehri Garhwal, for the 2026-27 session. One registration, three universities, and the college you name inside it decides where you study.

For the 2026-27 session that portal posts a registration deadline of 11 September 2026, and a separate notice opened new registrations for Kumaun University, Nainital and its affiliated colleges from 02 to 05 September 2026. The department has reopened windows on this portal after they closed, including a last-chance registration in September 2025, so treat a missed date as worth checking rather than settled.

A master's application starts somewhere else entirely, on its own calendar. The state's post-graduation admission portal for the 2026-2027 session carries a registration deadline of 25 October 2026, and registering on the undergraduate portal does nothing for a master's application.

The third address, and the one that trips people up, is the student portal at kunainital.samarth.edu.in. It ranks high for admission queries but it is not an application form. Its own instructions ask you to enter your roll number and the date of birth you had entered in the admission portal during admissions, which is to say it is for students already enrolled, issuing digital ID cards and programme details. If you do not yet have a roll number here, this is the wrong page.

Some routes the university still runs itself. Its student corner groups Ph.D. entrance, the integrated B.Ed. registration and the Uttarakhand State Eligibility Test together under KU Entrance Examinations, separately from the online admission form it points at the state portal, and the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme was advertised with its own application link in a notice dated 20 June 2026. Pharmacy goes through the state portal like everything else, and the entry is listed against the department rather than the campus: the KU list carries Bachelor of Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmacy lateral entry under Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bhimtal.

The rules that govern all of this are published as documents rather than web pages, in Hindi, and they are not current. The online admission rules page carries UG and PG rule sets for session 2023-24, a PG and professional courses set for 2022-23, an NEP-2020 set for 2022-23 and a pharmacy set for 2021-22, and nothing newer than 2023-24 is posted. Download the one matching your programme and campus, treat it as indicative rather than binding for the current session, and do not assume a rule from the general UG set applies to a professional course.

Cutoff

The university publishes no cutoff table, and it does not need one, because what it posts instead is the merit list itself: every selected candidate named, with the Class XII marks that put them there printed alongside. Entry to a general undergraduate programme turns on marks already in hand, not on a state entrance test: the portal's eligible programme list sets out a programme percentage criterion against each course. The outcome then appears as a departmental merit list, posted as a notice, one list at a time, and superseded by the next.

The 2026-27 cycle shows how far that can run. On the university's announcements feed, B.Sc. Forestry first semester reached a fifth merit list and B.Sc. Agriculture a fifth, while BCA and B.F.A. first semester each reached a fourth and B.A. first semester a third. Seats left unclaimed on one list roll into the next, so the mark that actually decided entry is whichever list finally filled the course, not the first one published.

B.A. at D.S.B. Campus is where you can watch that happen, because its lists are published as text rather than as pictures of text. The general-category column of the first list for 2026-27 opens at 98.4 and closes at 75. The second opens at 74.8 and closes at 55.2. The third and last opens at 54.8 and closes at 42.4, across 36 names. Anyone quoting 98.4 as the Kumaun B.A. cutoff is quoting the top of a queue on the first morning; the mark that still bought a B.A. seat at Nainital that session was 42.4. The reserved columns on that same third list stopped higher, at 44.4 in the scheduled-caste list and 47.2 in the other-backward-class one, each category working through a pool of its own.

Not every department publishes in that form. The B.Sc. Forestry, B.Sc. Agriculture, BCA and B.F.A. notices for the same session are scanned images with no text behind them, so no percentage can be lifted out of those, and no department's lists are consolidated year on year, by the university or by the state portal. The practical method is the slow one: identify the department, open the merit list and announcements pages during your session, and read the most recent list carrying your programme and semester. For an affiliated college, ask that college directly, since its list is its own.

Placements

One part of this university publishes placement data, and it is the pharmacy department at Bhimtal. Everything below comes from the return Kumaun University filed for the 2025 pharmacy ranking, and none of it describes the arts, science, commerce or law departments at Nainital.

Pharmacy placements, as filed for India Rankings 20252021-222022-232023-24
B.Pharm graduating in minimum stipulated time293138
B.Pharm placed1644
B.Pharm selected for higher studies82122
B.Pharm median salaryRs 2,50,000Rs 2,50,000Rs 2,50,000
M.Pharm graduating in minimum stipulated time332736
M.Pharm placed232030
M.Pharm median salaryRs 4,00,000Rs 4,00,000Rs 4,00,000

Two things in that table should change how you read a B.Pharm offer here. The undergraduate placement count fell from 16 to 4 and stayed at 4 while the number going on to further study rose in the same years, so the typical exit from this B.Pharm is a master's application, not a job letter. The two columns do not add up to the graduating count either, so a share of each year's cohort is in neither, and the filing does not say where. The postgraduate degree is the one that places: 30 of the 36 M.Pharm students graduating in 2023-24 were placed.

The second is that both median salaries are identical across all three filed years, Rs 2,50,000 for B.Pharm and Rs 4,00,000 for M.Pharm. A median that does not move for three years is a soft number, and it is not a figure to build a loan repayment around.

The department maintains its own list of recruiters and names Ranbaxy, Dr. Reddy's Lab, Sun Pharma, Wockhardt and Lupin among them. That page carries no year against the list and no count of offers, so treat it as a record of where alumni have gone rather than as a description of a current placement season.

For the rest of the university there is nothing comparable. No campus-wide placement report is published, and the affiliated colleges do not file one through the university either.

Seat Matrix

Approved intake at the campuses is small, and the pharmacy figures are the only ones filed with a national body.

The B.Pharm jump has a paper trail, which is rarer than it sounds. The Pharmacy Council of India records against the Department Of Pharmaceutical Sciences Kumaun University Campus Bhimtal that its 398th Executive Committee considered an increase for session 2023-24 and granted a raise in admission in B.Pharm from 30 to 60 seats, with the Registrar of Kumaun University named as the examining authority. The regulator's decision and the university's own filing agree, which is worth knowing when a coaching brochure quotes a third figure.

The same filing says who ends up on those benches. The pharmacy department reported 182 undergraduates, of whom 168 are from within the state and 14 from outside it, and 67 postgraduates, of whom 46 are from within the state and 21 from outside. The gender split leans the same way at both levels, with 102 women among the 182 undergraduates and 37 among the 67 postgraduates. The undergraduate cohort is close to entirely local; the master's programme is the one that draws from beyond Uttarakhand.

Seat counts for the affiliated government colleges are published, but as a scanned intake document rather than a searchable table, and it covers the government colleges only. Anywhere else, you are asking a private college office for its own sanctioned number.

Rankings

Kumaun University appears in exactly one of the India Rankings 2025 lists. It is absent from the University and Overall tables and from engineering, management, medical, law, architecture, dental, research and innovation. Pharmacy is the whole of its national ranking record, and the department has held a place in that list for six straight years.

Read that column top to bottom and the arc, not the latest row, is the story. The department entered the list at 75th with 37.23 in 2020, climbed hard to 58th the next year, and has now given back nearly all of that gain. The 2025 fall is not only crowding at the top of the list, either, because the score itself dropped, and the parameter columns say where. Teaching, learning and resources stood at 63.92 in 2024 and at 60.13 in 2025; perception went from 6.33 to 5.12, while graduation outcome rose from 58.72 to 61.24. Perception has been this department's weakest parameter in every year of that series, which for a pharmacy department of this size in a hill district is close to structural.

The university still advertises an older position. Its own overview page cites a 61st position in NIRF, Pharmacy Category, which was where it stood in 2022. Read the ranking year before you read the rank.

It is not for want of trying elsewhere. The university's own NIRF page shows that it filed disclosures for Overall, Management and Pharmacy in 2026, 2025, 2024 and 2022, with a single India Rankings 2023 entry among them. Submitting and being ranked are separate events, and on the published lists only pharmacy has produced a place.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The Central Library at Nainital was established in 1973 and holds 70,425 books, of which 67,787 are reference and 2,638 are textbooks, along with 5,990 theses, roughly 160,000 e-books and roughly 4,500 e-journals. Access to the electronic collection comes through INFLIBNET, with e-ShodhSindhu for journals and Shodhganga for theses. Set that against the reading-room equipment it lists, 10 computers, of which 2 are PCs with LAN connectivity, and the picture is clear enough: bring your own laptop, and the library's value here is the licensed content rather than the terminals.

Hostels are split across the two campuses and are named rather than numbered. D.S.B. Campus lists Saheed Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad and K. C. Pant for boys and Rani Laxmi, Kamla Pant and Gaura Devi for girls, with Babu JagJeewan Ram and Kalpna Chawla at the Technical Campus, Bhimtal, each with a named warden and a contact number. A Bhimtal programme means a Bhimtal hostel; the Nainital blocks are a separate allotment on a separate hill.

Health cover is one of the more concrete things the university publishes. Students are insured for hospitalisation up to Rs 75,000 and daycare up to Rs 10,000, with nominated parents covered against personal accident for Rs 2,50,000, and the cover operates 24 hours across India rather than only on campus. On-campus first aid and an ambulance to the district hospitals handle the rest.

The only place the university answers an accessibility question in a standard form is the pharmacy filing. There, Bhimtal claimed ramps or lifts and adapted toilets in over 80% of its buildings, with wheelchairs available and help moving between blocks. Nothing equivalent is published for the Nainital buildings, several of them colonial and on a slope.

The Himalaya Museum is the campus feature you will not find elsewhere in the state. Established in 1987 under the Department of History and inaugurated by Prof. Yashpal, then Chairman of the University Grants Commission, it holds roughly 300 coins including a gold coin of the Kushana period, statues dating from the 2nd century BC to the 15th century AD, folk masks used at the Hiljatra festival, and roughly 1,000 photographs of Uttarakhand's rock carvings, folk art and freedom movement.

Hostel

Faculty

One staffing number is published, and it comes with no scope attached. The overview page's summary strip carries 300+ faculty members beside the year of establishment and the campus acreage, and nothing on that page says whether the count stops at the two campuses or reaches into the affiliated colleges, how it divides by department, or how many of the posts are permanent.

The one department with an audited count is pharmacy, which entered 25 faculty members in its India Rankings 2025 submission. Its public staff list is headed by Prof. Kumud Upadhyaya as Head of Department, with professors and associate professors above a long tail of assistant professors whose designations carry the suffix "Cont.", the university's marker for a contractual appointment. If continuity of supervision matters to you, and for a two-year M.Pharm or a Ph.D. it should, ask who your supervisor would be and on what terms they are appointed.

Research capacity is concentrated and honestly reported. Dr. Nand Gopal Sahoo of the Chemistry Department is Director of Research. In pharmacy, the filed figures show 3 sponsored projects from 2 funding agencies worth Rs 11,86,000 in 2023-24, against 1 project worth Rs 1,25,000 the year before and none in 2021-22, with zero consultancy projects in all three years. Doctoral throughput moved the other way. 33 full-time Ph.D. students were on the rolls, and graduations ran 4, then 5, then 2 across the three years to 2023-24, so the grants arrived as the completions thinned.

The department's own page adds a lifetime tally rather than an annual one, claiming 29 papers in international journals and 149 in national journals, and that 63 students have qualified GATE, 28 have qualified GPAT and 12 have qualified MAT to date. No period is attached to those counts, so read them as a departmental history.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

official-report

The current grade is lower than the one the university's own prose still quotes, so check the source before you repeat either. NAAC's register of institutions with valid accreditation as on 14-08-2025 carries Kumaun University at grade B+, in its third accreditation cycle. The university's overview page still describes an 'A' Grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2015, which was a different cycle under a different framework.

One warning before you go hunting for that record on the university's own site. The IQAC link in its site header still points to kuiqac.in, a domain the university no longer controls; it now serves an online cricket betting ID service. Ignore it, and take the accreditation status from NAAC's own register.

Central recognition is settled. The university states that it earned its recognition from the University Grants Commission under Section 12-B of the UGC Act, 1956, and the UGC's consolidated list carries it as a state university.

Programme-level approval is a separate question from the institutional grade, and it is answered by different regulators for different courses. The Pharmacy Council of India lists the Department Of Pharmaceutical Sciences Kumaun University Campus Bhimtal among degree institutions approved under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act. On the technical side, the university says only that the Bhimtal campus programmes are approved by prominent national bodies such as AICTE, without saying which body covers which course. The pharmacy department's page separately reproduces an AICTE approval letter, F.No. Northern/1-2454736124/2015/EOA dated 07-Apr-2015, for the 2015-16 session, which is dated 2015 and should not be read as a current approval for anything.

Scholarships

One award is administered here rather than through a portal, and it is narrow. The Research and Development Cell issued the Ph.D. Scholarship Scheme for selection year 2026-27 under letter number 138 dated 29.08.2026, allotting Rs 5,000 a month to 26 selected research scholars. The money is the state's, under a Uttarakhand government order numbered 221515/XXIV-C-2/2024-17(02)2023 dated 02.07.2024; the university runs the selection.

Read the eligibility closely, because the gates stack. It is open to Ph.D. scholars holding NET or USET who are registered at the university's campuses or at government colleges affiliated to it, who receive no other scholarship, salary or financial support, and who hold no government or non-government job. The registration condition is the quiet exclusion: a scholar at a private affiliated college is outside the scheme regardless of merit. Applications go through a single Google form, and this cycle's form closes at 11:59:59 PM on Saturday, September 12, 2026; the next cycle's letter appears on the announcements feed.

For undergraduates the money mostly arrives as state and central fee reimbursement rather than as an award. Bhimtal's return counts that support head by head: 44 undergraduates whose tuition is met in full from state and central government funds, 8 met from institution funds, 1 from private bodies, and 15 postgraduates on the state and central route. Those reimbursements run on category and income certificates filed through the state, not through an application to the university.

Externally funded awards surface on the state admission portal rather than the university site. The portal carried a notice for the Azim Premji Scholarship 2026-27 with applications open from 10 August to 31 August 2026; that window has closed for this cycle, and the portal's notices page is where the next one will appear. Uttarakhand's higher education incentive scholarship is a separate state scheme with its own application route.

Student Reviews

Expertie does not host student reviews of Kumaun University, and there is no verified review set on this page to show. Rating a university whose two campuses and scores of affiliated colleges differ this widely would in any case flatten the only thing worth knowing, which is what a specific department or college is like.

The university does collect feedback, and it publishes the instruments without publishing the results. Its student corner carries a students satisfaction survey along with separate parents, alumni and teacher feedback forms, and an e-Samadhan grievance redressal portal. Neither the survey findings nor the grievance outcomes are put out in aggregate.

Two checks are better than a star rating here. Look up the specific affiliated college in NAAC's accreditation register, since the colleges are graded separately from the university and the range across them is wide. Then use the wardens' numbers printed on the university's own hostel page, one against each block at Nainital and Bhimtal, and ask the things no form captures: whether a room is realistically available for a first-year student on your programme, and how far the walk is from that block to your department.
