Computer science and electronics seats at Assam University arrive from JoSAA and then the CSAB special rounds on a JEE Main All India Rank, and the university's own B.Tech form may be filled in only by a candidate who already holds a provisional seat allotment letter from that counselling (Assam University non-CUET admission portal). Its MBA, meanwhile, shuts applications in April, months before those engineering forms open in August. Entrance test, allotting body and day-one bill all change from one department to the next here, so applying is mostly the work of identifying which of several parallel machines your programme runs on.
Overview
Assam University came into existence in 1994 after the enactment of the Assam (Central) University Act 1989, and its main campus stands at Dargakona, about 20 kms from Silchar, spread over 600 acres of hillocks and lakes, with a second campus at Diphu in the district of Karbi Anglong (Assam University, about the university). The notification that actually brought that Act into force is dated 21st January 1994, and the second campus is a good deal younger than the first: Diphu started functioning on 20th July 2007 with six departments, in buildings lent to it (Assam University Diphu Campus, about).
Its jurisdiction covers the Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Sribhumi and Hailakandi plus the hill districts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong (Assam University admission portal), and its published list of affiliated colleges runs to 75 entries, from Cachar College and Karimganj College to Diphu Govt College and Women's College Silchar (Assam University affiliated college list). Those colleges carry the region's ordinary bachelor's degrees, and the campus fee sheet lists no general BA or B.Sc. at all.
The campus roll reflects that division of labour. The university's 2025 return to the Ministry of Education counts 2,943 students in two-year master's programmes against 1,119 in four-year undergraduate programmes, 362 in five-year integrated programmes and 284 in five-year undergraduate programmes (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return).

Courses & Fees
Nothing here is priced as one number, and the spread between the cheapest and the costliest programme is roughly sevenfold. Monthly tuition on the arts and science side is Rs 330, which comes to Rs 3,960 for the year, and the line that actually moves the total is the annual course fee: Rs 1,320 for a language master's against Rs 66,000 for the MCA (Assam University fee structure, UG and PG). Engineering is billed on a separate sheet at Rs 350 a month tuition with an annual course fee of Rs 36,000 for the B.Tech (Assam University fee structure, B.Tech and M.Tech).
The menu behind those prices is broad and lopsided. The Silchar campus runs master's degrees in the languages, Bengali, Hindi, Manipuri, Sanskrit, Urdu, Arabic and English, in the social sciences, economics, commerce, political science, history, sociology and social work, in the sciences, physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, life science and bioinformatics, microbiology, biotechnology, ecology and environmental science, earth science and computer science, and in professional fields including law, education, library and information science, mass communication, visual and performing arts, hospitality and tourism management, pharmacy and business administration, alongside integrated programmes, an MCA and a set of postgraduate diplomas (Assam University fee structure, UG and PG). Undergraduate teaching on campus skips the general degrees and runs to the B.Tech, B.Pharm, the five-year integrated B.A. LL.B (Hons), BSW-MSW, BVA-MVA, BPA, a four-year undergraduate course in computer science, a Bachelor of Vocation and the BBA (Assam University admission portal).
The figures below are the total payable at the time of admission, which is what a family actually has to arrange on day one. Refundable caution money, on the library and in most cases the laboratory too, sits inside these totals, so the sum is not entirely a sunk cost.
| Programme | Payable at admission | Source |
|---|---|---|
| M.A. in Bengali, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Manipuri, Urdu, Arabic, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology | Rs 12,090 | UG and PG fee structure |
| M.A. or M.Com in Economics or Commerce | Rs 14,730 | UG and PG fee structure |
| M.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Microbiology or Statistics | Rs 16,380 | UG and PG fee structure |
| M.Sc. in Chemistry | Rs 21,880 | UG and PG fee structure |
| M.Sc. in Ecology and Environmental Science | Rs 17,480 | UG and PG fee structure |
| M.Sc. in Biotechnology | Rs 20,780 | UG and PG fee structure |
| LL.M. | Rs 19,680 | UG and PG fee structure |
| B.A. LL.B. (Hons) | Rs 22,540 | UG and PG fee structure |
| Masters in Hospitality and Tourism Management | Rs 51,030 | UG and PG fee structure |
| B.Pharm | Rs 69,950 | UG and PG fee structure |
| M.Pharm | Rs 80,180 | UG and PG fee structure |
| MCA | Rs 80,730 | UG and PG fee structure |
| B.Tech | Rs 68,520 | B.Tech and M.Tech fee structure |
| M.Tech, full time | Rs 47,520 | B.Tech and M.Tech fee structure |
| M.Tech in ECE, part time | Rs 89,420 | B.Tech and M.Tech fee structure |
| MBA | Rs 51,320 | Business Administration prospectus 2026 |
Watch for two adjustments that the totals above do not show on their face. A sponsored candidate pays three times the annual course fee component, on the arts and science sheet and the engineering one alike. And the B.Tech and M.Tech totals already carry a Rs 5,000 transportation charge (B.Tech and M.Tech fee structure), which is what a campus 20 kms outside Silchar and a fleet of more than twenty buses run for students and staff cost between them (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27).
Admissions
Which test you sit is fixed by the programme, and the engineering routes are the ones the university does not run itself. Start there. The 60 B.Tech seats in computer science and the 60 in electronics and communication are filled through JoSAA and then CSAB on the JEE Main All India Rank, while agricultural engineering splits its intake, 45 seats through that same central counselling and 15 through CUET (UG), JEE Main, the Combined Entrance Examination conducted by Assam Science and Technology University, or a departmental admission test (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). Lateral entry into the second year is decided by a test each department runs itself, and when seats survive all of that the university notifies its own spot round. Applying costs Rs 1,000 in the general and OBC categories, Rs 900 for OBC non-creamy layer and EWS, and Rs 800 for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
A further block of engineering seats never reaches the counselling at all: seven places in agricultural engineering and nine in each of computer science and electronics are set aside under the DASA scheme for foreign nationals, overseas Indians and children of Indian workers in the Gulf (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). On the postgraduate side of the same school, a candidate admitted on a valid GATE score may be recommended by the department for an AICTE GATE fellowship, so the route an M.Tech applicant enters by decides whether the Rs 47,520 admission bill is the last money the degree asks for.
Outside the engineering school, campus admission runs on CUET, with a parallel track for candidates who did not sit it: the university operates a separate non-CUET admission portal on Samarth for its postgraduate, undergraduate and integrated programmes (Assam University non-CUET admission portal). Inside that non-CUET route the affiliating system reappears as a weightage rather than a quota. A candidate who graduated from a college affiliated to Assam University gets 30% weightage on the aggregate percentage secured in the qualifying examination when merit is calculated, and a candidate holding honours or a major subject gets 10% weightage on the marks in that subject (Assam University eligibility criteria). At Diphu, ST(H) candidates of Assam receive a special weightage worth 20% of their qualifying marks over and above all of that.
Management keeps its own clock and its own paperwork. An MBA applicant needs a bachelor's with 60% marks, 55% for SC, ST and OBC non-creamy layer candidates, and a score at or above the 50th percentile in CAT, XAT, CMAT, CUET, ATMA or MAT, relaxed to the 45th percentile for those same categories. Shortlisted candidates have to clear both the group discussion and the personal interview with at least 50% in each, and the final list is a composite of past academic record at 30% weight, group discussion at 30% and personal interview at 40% (Assam University MBA admission guidelines). The MBA window in the 2026 cycle opened on 10 April and shut on 19 April, months before the B.Tech CSAB forms opened on 10 August or the PhD window on 29 August (Assam University admission portal). Miss that ten-day window and no CAT percentile rescues the year.
One provision deserves naming because almost nobody publicises it. Dependent children of leprosy affected persons, up to two per family, are admitted free of charge to every diploma, certificate, integrated, undergraduate and postgraduate course the university runs (Assam University eligibility criteria).
Cutoff
The engineering seats are filled in three passes, and each one reaches further down the JEE Main rank list than the last. JoSAA allots first, the CSAB special rounds reopen whatever is left, and the university then runs its own spot round for the seats that survive both (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). Because the university does not run either of those two rounds, the branch-wise opening and closing ranks for them sit with the counselling bodies, on the JoSAA and CSAB rank tools, and not on any Assam University page.
What the third pass looks like is on the university's own file, and it is the part no rank table shows. For the 2026-27 session the school of technology published 47 provisionally eligible candidates for spot counselling across agricultural engineering, computer science and electronics, with JEE All India Ranks running from 1,25,767 down to 39,24,969, and called them to the assembly hall of the computer science department on 07/09/2026 (List of provisionally eligible candidates for spot counselling, Triguna Sen School of Technology). A further six applicants had no JEE Main 2026 score at all and were told a valid CEE score might make them eligible for a second spot round if seats remained.
Two things follow for anyone planning around this. A JoSAA closing rank badly understates how far the seat is actually reachable, because the spot round is where the last places go and it goes very deep. And rank is not what strikes a candidate off at that stage: the one applicant refused outright had failed chemistry in Class 12, while several of the eligible are eligible only on condition that they produce a current-year OBC non-creamy-layer certificate or resubmit a Class 12 marksheet.
For every other programme there is no cutoff to look up in advance. Departmental merit lists in the CUET and non-CUET streams are published one department at a time as each round closes, followed by spot admission lists wherever seats remain, so a closing mark for M.Ed. or social work exists only after that department has finished allotting (Assam University non-CUET admission portal).
Placements
The university files placement counts with the Ministry of Education by programme length, and the four bands behave nothing like each other. Every row below is the 2023-24 cohort.
| Programme band, 2023-24 | Graduating | Placed | Median salary | Higher study |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UG, four year | 289 | 97 | Rs 3,98,000 | 94 |
| UG, five year | 48 | 24 | Rs 3,50,000 | 23 |
| PG, two year | 1,233 | 285 | Rs 4,50,000 | 558 |
| PG-Integrated, five year | 65 | 34 | Rs 3,36,000 | 31 |
The four-year undergraduate median is the number to watch, because it has moved in one direction: Rs 6,00,000 for the class of 2021-22, Rs 4,00,000 for 2022-23 and Rs 3,98,000 for 2023-24, while the placed count over those same three years ran 78 of 188 graduates, then 77 of 231, then 97 of 289 (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return, University). The shortfall concentrates in the two-year master's band, where 1,233 students finished, 285 were recorded as placed and 558 went on to further study, leaving several hundred the return accounts for in neither column. Pharmacy runs the other way. Of the 46 B.Pharm students who graduated in 2023-24, 29 were recorded as placed at a median of Rs 3,00,000, a better than three-in-five hit rate and the best of the four 2023-24 bands above (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return, Pharmacy).
The Career Counselling and Placement Cell names PwC, Deloitte, Capgemini, TCS, ITC, Asian Paints, Berger Paints, Marico, Power Grid, ICICI Bank, Bandhan Bank and the Azim Premji Foundation among its recruiters over the two most recent years, and publishes the drive-by-drive record rather than a single headline figure (Assam University Career Counselling and Placement Cell).
Seat Matrix
Engineering intake is published route by route, which is the only sensible way to read it when several separate counselling processes feed one department.
| Department | B.Tech via CSAB | B.Tech via CUET, JEE, CEE or DAT | B.Tech via DASA | B.Tech lateral entry | M.Tech via GATE or DAT | M.Tech via CUET | M.Tech part time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Agricultural Engineering | 45 | 15 | 07 | 06 | 14 | 04 | none |
| Computer Science and Engineering | 60 | none | 09 | 06 | 14 | 04 | none |
| Electronics and Communication Engineering | 60 | none | 09 | 06 | 14 | 04 | 18 |
The DASA column is supernumerary and priced on its own scale, with tuition of Rs 1,25,000 for children of Indian workers in the Gulf and USD 8,000 for non-SAARC applicants, on top of an annual fee of Rs 64,320 (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). Outside engineering there is no consolidated seat matrix to read; intake is printed department by department inside the prospectus, next to each department's eligibility rules.
Rankings
Assam University appears on two Government of India tables for 2025, and its own record shows that this was a return rather than a debut. It takes rank 97 with a score of 47.28 in the University category (NIRF 2025 University ranking) and rank 76 with 44.24 in Pharmacy (NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking). The university's own accreditation and ranking page records it at 93 in the University table in 2021 with a score of 39.21, and then in the 101-150 band in 2022, 2023 and 2024 (Assam University accreditation and ranking status). So 2025 is the first year since 2021 that it has carried an individual rank rather than a band.
| NIRF 2025 parameter | University, rank 97 | Pharmacy, rank 76 |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 69.45 | 53.30 |
| Research and Professional Practice | 19.35 | 30.38 |
| Graduation Outcomes | 70.24 | 61.88 |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 55.93 | 51.86 |
| Perception | 10.00 | 15.71 |
| Parameter scores taken from the University and Pharmacy tables of NIRF 2025. |
The two columns describe the same campus and disagree about it. University-wide, research and professional practice scores 19.35 and drags everything down, while teaching resources at 69.45 and graduation outcomes at 70.24 hold the rank up (NIRF 2025 University ranking). Read only the pharmacy department and research scores 30.38, more than half again as high, on a perception score of 15.71 that also beats the university's 10.00 (NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking). A student choosing pharmacy here is not buying the university's average.
Departments
Teaching is grouped into 16 schools of studies holding 41 departments (Business Administration prospectus 2026), and the naming of those schools is a deliberate act of curation rather than administrative labelling. Languages and cultural studies sit under Rabindranath Tagore, English and foreign languages under Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay, physical sciences under Albert Einstein, life sciences under Hargobind Khurana, earth sciences under Aryabhatta, environmental sciences under E.P. Odum, medical and paramedical sciences under Susruta, technology under Triguna Sen, legal studies under Deshabandhu Chittaranjan, education under Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, social sciences under Jadunath Sarkar, philosophy under Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, library sciences under Swami Vivekananda, management under Jawaharlal Nehru, economics and commerce under Mahatma Gandhi, and creative arts under Abanindranath Tagore (Assam University, about the university).
The schools are also wildly uneven in size. The Susruta School of Medical and Paramedical Sciences holds a single department, pharmaceutical sciences, and that one department carries the whole of the university's Pharmacy ranking, while the Rabindranath Tagore School gathers seven, from Bengali and Manipuri to linguistics and Indian comparative literature, under one roof (Assam University, about the university).
Facilities & Infrastructure
Rabindra Library publishes its own collection counts, which makes it the easiest part of this campus to check before you arrive. It lists 140,918 books, 222,544 eBooks, 13,096 e-journals, 2,398 theses and 22 print journals, and its reading room opens seven days a week, 09:00 AM to 9:00 PM from Monday to Friday, 09:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and 09:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, though the circulation counter and digital library keep shorter hours (Rabindra Library, Assam University). Those are published hours rather than a promise, and the library says they shift during holidays, examinations and vacations.
Health cover is built around distance. The university health centre issues a health card to every student, covers each of them under a medical insurance policy paid through the annual fee, runs health camps with specialist doctors from Silchar Medical College, and keeps an ambulance to move emergency cases to that college, which is around 10 km from the campus (Assam University Health Care Centre). The centre itself has been re-equipped with an X-ray machine, auto analysers and a diagnostic laboratory, and the page is candid that costs beyond the insurance fall on parents and guardians.
Capital spending backs both. In 2023-24 the university put Rs 1,05,59,325 into the library and Rs 1,04,16,454 into new laboratory equipment, on top of Rs 33,46,32,020 of other capital assets (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return). The school of technology adds two auditoriums seating over 300, air-conditioned and on uninterrupted power (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27).
Hostel
Residence is rationed, and the university says so in print rather than leaving applicants to find out: hostel seats are limited, availability depends on vacancy, and every student may not get one (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). Eleven halls stand on the Silchar campus, five for men and six for women, and the university publishes each one's capacity.
| Hostel | Type | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Sahid Kamala Chatri Niwas | Girls | 131 |
| Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Chatra Niwas | Boys | 120 |
| Begum Rukia Chatri Niwas | Girls | 100 |
| Ladies Hostel-06 | Girls | 100 |
| Gents Hostel-05 | Boys | 100 |
| Ambedkar Chatri Niwas | Girls | 99 |
| Kaji Nazrul Islam Chatra Niwas | Boys | 90 |
| Mother Terrasa Chatri Niwas | Girls | 61 |
| APJ Abdul Kalam Chatra Niwas | Boys | 60 |
| Baghini Nevedita Chatri Niwas | Girls | 46 |
| Sahid Khudiram Bose Chatra Niwas | Boys | 46 |
No hall on that list holds more than 131 beds (Assam University hostel details), and the campus carries 2,943 students in two-year master's programmes alone (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return), which is the whole explanation for the rationing.
Hostel forms are issued at the cash counter of the administrative building and submitted to the Dean of Students' Welfare, who notifies hostel admission separately from course admission, and selection of SC and ST students for hostel places is made on their previous qualifying examination results (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27).
Faculty
Grant-funded research at Assam University is shrinking while paid work for outside clients is not, and a doctoral applicant should weigh that before picking a department. Sponsored research fell from 65 projects worth Rs 13,57,03,691 in 2021-22 to 45 projects worth Rs 9,15,34,369 in 2023-24. Consultancy went the other way over the same span, from Rs 15,93,680 across 15 projects to Rs 6,01,94,650 across four projects, filed against 83 client organisations (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return, University).
The teaching base underneath that is 368 faculty members in the university-wide filing and 13 in the separate Pharmacy one, against a doctoral roll of 615 full-time and 179 part-time scholars that produced 112 full-time doctorates in 2023-24 (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return, University, Pharmacy).
Notable Alumni
The Alumni Association publishes its constitution, its office bearers, its newsletter Kasturi and reports of its meets going back to 2017, but no roster of names (Assam University Alumni Association), and neither the university's own pages nor its Wikipedia entry carries one. So none is given here.
News & Articles
The admission site's notice board, not the main university homepage, is where anything time-critical appears, and it moves fast enough that a week-old screenshot is stale. Recent items include the list of provisionally eligible candidates for B.Tech spot counselling under the school of technology, a corrigendum to the PhD admission notification for 2026-27, and the guidelines for physical reporting and enrolment of first-year B.Tech students admitted through JoSAA and CSAB (Assam University admission portal).
The same board carries the affiliated system's paperwork, which no other page collects. The B.Ed entrance examination for 2026 produced a common merit position list and then a separate provisional first-round merit list for each participating institution, including the District Institutes of Education and Training at Sribhumi, Karbi Anglong, Hailakandi and Dima Hasao (Assam University admission portal). A candidate for a college seat has to read down to their own college's notice.
College Compare
Three Assam institutions hold an individual rank in the NIRF 2025 University table, and Assam University is the last of them: Gauhati University at 33 with 57.37, Tezpur University at 79 with 49.31, and Assam University at 97 with 47.28 (NIRF 2025 University ranking). The gap to Tezpur is a little over two points of a hundred, which is closer than the nearly twenty-rank distance suggests.
The comparison a Silchar applicant will actually reach for is the other institution in the same town, and the two do not meet on any table. National Institute of Technology Silchar is ranked 97 in Overall with 49.51 and 50 in Engineering with 55.91 (NIRF 2025 Overall ranking, NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking), while Assam University files nothing in Engineering and NIT Silchar files nothing in University. On the pharmacy side there is a direct read: Assam University sits at 76 with 44.24 against Dibrugarh University at 53 with 50.91 (NIRF 2025 Pharmacy ranking).

Getting to Dargakona from Silchar means about 20 kms of road (Assam University, about the university), covered by a university fleet the prospectus puts at more than twenty buses for students and staff (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). The Diphu campus is a separate journey into Karbi Anglong entirely, and the six departments it opened with have since become ten, in Assamese, anthropology, commerce, English, geography, Hindi, history, life science, physics and political science, alongside a Centre of Tribal Studies (Assam University Diphu Campus).
Verified
Approvals & Accreditation
Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.
The NAAC record went up once and then fell hard, and the university publishes both moves without softening either. Cycle 1 closed at a CGPA of 2.85, cycle 2 rose to 2.92, and cycle 3 fell to 2.39, with Grade B awarded in all three (Assam University accreditation and ranking status). There is a discrepancy on the validity of that third cycle worth flagging before you rely on it: the university's own page shows it valid to 19-09-2026, while the data sheet the university filed with NIRF for 2025 gives the same cycle as valid to 19-09-2024 (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return). Anyone who needs the accreditation to be current for a scholarship or an employer should confirm it with the university rather than pick whichever date suits.
On the professional side, the B.Tech and M.Tech programmes in agricultural engineering, computer science and electronics are AICTE approved (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27), and the Department of Business Administration has held AICTE approval since 1997 (Business Administration prospectus 2026).
Aid
Scholarships
The most useful number here is not a scheme name, it is who actually pays. Take the two-year master's programmes, the largest roll on campus: the 2025 return to the Ministry of Education counts 1,369 socially challenged and 55 economically backward students in that band, and records 257 of them getting full tuition fee reimbursement from the state and central governments, 373 from the university itself, one from a private body and 793 getting none (Assam University NIRF 2025 data return). The four-year undergraduate band leans the other way, 122 reimbursed by government against 58 by the institution and 490 with no full reimbursement at all, so where the money comes from here depends on which programme you enter.
The named routes sit alongside that. Students domiciled in the North Eastern Region who passed Class XII from a school inside the region and then took a seat at a UGC-recognised institution are eligible for Ishan Uday, and the university separately runs an AUS-UGC fellowship while pointing research students at ICSSR, JRF and SRF, the Dr D. S. Kothari fellowship and the Rajiv Gandhi fellowship (Triguna Sen School of Technology Prospectus 2026-27). One deadline is easy to lose: SC, ST, OBC and PwD students are told to file the scholarship form for the academic year by February, and a form filed after that waits a year.

Student Reviews
We have no verified student reviews for either the Silchar or the Diphu campus, and we do not publish a rating we cannot trace to identified students. The university's own filings are the substitute available: the placement and reimbursement counts above, the hall-by-hall hostel capacities, and the library's opening hours are all published by Assam University itself and can be read without anyone's opinion attached.

Gallery
No campus photographs have been self-hosted for this page yet. Assam University does publish a photo gallery of its own, running to nineteen captioned images of convocations, foundation-day events and the astronomical observatory at the Department of Physics (Assam University, about the university), and the Diphu campus site carries its own pictures of the administrative building and main gate (Assam University Diphu Campus).
