Midnapore College

Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal Est. 1873 Official site Updated
NIRF College
#42

Midnapore College holds 42nd place among all Indian colleges in the government's NIRF 2025 ranking, and of the six West Bengal colleges inside that year's top 100 it is the only one not sitting in Kolkata or Howrah. It has been teaching in this district town since 1873 and setting its own syllabus and examinations since the University Grants Commission granted it autonomy. Rank is not the most useful number it publishes. In the return it filed with that ranking, 1,301 students completed a three-year undergraduate course on time in 2023-24; 776 of them carried on studying, and 63 took a job.

Overview

The college is older than the degree it awards. Its own account traces an unbroken line from a private school in 1834 and the Zilla School in 1840 to a college in 1873, a government-sponsored college in 1956, and a move of affiliation from the University of Calcutta to Vidyasagar University in 1985. Vidyasagar University, in the same town, still awards the degrees. What changed the college's internal machinery was the conferment of autonomous status by the UGC from the Session 2014-2015, which lets it frame its own courses and run its own examinations under that university's degree. It calls itself the first autonomous college under Vidyasagar University.

Two practical consequences follow. Teaching runs in morning and day shifts across 22 honours subjects at undergraduate level and 14 at postgraduate level, but the shift is not something an applicant picks: the general guidelines allot it after admission, on an alternating merit basis, and only in the subjects the college actually teaches twice over. And because the examinations are the college's own, semester results and the academic calendar come from its controller of examinations rather than from the university's examination office.

Courses & Fees

The teaching is broad rather than specialised, which is what a general degree college of this size is for. Honours degrees run across the sciences and the arts, master's degrees follow in most of the same subjects, and a layer of vocational and certificate courses sits alongside them. Physical Education appears twice on the college's own list, once as an honours subject and once as a general B.A. degree.

LevelWhat is taught

Fees live inside the college's own downloads rather than on any page you can read at a glance. The admission page posts a UG fee structure and, for postgraduate entrants, a separate admission fee sheet and a subject-wise fee structure. The undergraduate sheet prices every course on its own row across all eight semesters of the four-year degree, bills admission together with the first semester, and adds a laboratory charge where an interdisciplinary paper is lab-based, so the figure that applies to you is the row for your honours subject and not a range quoted on a listing site. Two costs are stated in the open: a replacement identity card costs Rs 100, and fees once paid are not refunded, with cancellation refunds made in accordance with the UGC guidelines and any excess payment handled on written application to the Principal.

What the fee sheet will not tell you is how many students here never pay the full amount. Against 2,847 students on the three-year undergraduate programmes, government money covered full tuition for 1,072 of them and the college's own funds for a further 712. Reimbursement, not the printed fee, is what most families here are actually working with.

Admissions

There is no national entrance test between you and a seat, and no state counselling round either. Applications are made online from the college's admission page, which hands off to the West Bengal online admission platform under the college code MIDN; for the 2026-2027 undergraduate cycle that window ran from 14.05.2026 to 29.05.2026. Selection runs on an online merit based system, and the merit index is your marks in the best five subjects of the 10+2 examination rather than any test score. A handful of subjects sit outside that system on a first-come window instead.

The portal page for college code MIDN is where the lists appear and where objections go: it tells applicants to send complaints about the provisional merit list to the college's admission email, and it carries the schedule, the intake capacity, the fee structure and the hostel allow lists as downloads. The published schedule works through a provisional list, a short complaints window, a final list, and then up to four successive merit lists as seats clear.

Postgraduate admission is the part most applicants misread. The seats are split, with 80% of the capacity reserved for candidates from the parent university and 20% for candidates from other universities, so a Vidyasagar University graduate and an outside applicant are not competing in the same pool at all. The 2025-2026 postgraduate window ran from 25.07.2025 to 11.08.2025, a short fortnight tied to the university's results.

Two documents catch people out each year. Candidates claiming the OBC category must file a non-creamy-layer certificate to the criteria set by the West Bengal Backward Classes Welfare department, whose notification of 18th May, 2026 the category-wise seat break-up was reissued to follow, and the college then chased the certificates again with a submission deadline of 19.07.2026 for first-semester students. An APAAR or ABC identity has to be created and uploaded with the form, and the college publishes its own instructions for making one.

One rule quietly disqualifies a whole group of applicants. Only candidates who passed the qualifying 10+2 examination in 2025 or 2026 could apply in the 2026-2027 cycle, so a gap year spent on coaching or a second attempt shuts you out here in a way it would not at a college that admits through a state counselling round. Once admitted, the regulations require a minimum of 75% attendance in class, enforced at the end-semester examination and again in the opening days of the first semester.

Cutoff

The college does publish a bar, and it is not a rank. For 2026-2027 it printed a minimum eligibility criterion for every honours subject, written as an aggregate percentage in the 10+2 plus a floor in the relevant subject, with a relaxation for reserved categories: English asks for more in English than History asks for in History, and the highest aggregate bars sit on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English. What the college does not publish is the mark of the last candidate actually admitted, which is the number people mean when they say cutoff.

Then there is the route that goes round the merit list altogether. Ten subjects opened on first-come direct admission on 14th May, the same day the application window opened, and they are the small-intake arts and vocational ones: Hindi, Economics, Education, Electronics, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, Sociology, Yoga and Tourism and Aviation Management. In those subjects there is no merit list to clear at all, which is a design choice rather than a sign of empty seats.

The empty seats show up later. The college extended direct admission to 05.06.2026, then invited fresh applications through a Google Form for 13 subjects between 13.06.26 and 18.06.26, publishing the resulting list of prospective candidates on 23.06.26. Thirteen subjects reopening in the middle of June is the real signal, and it says those seats did not fill on merit. So the question worth asking is not what the cutoff was but whether your subject turned up in that June round, and the notice board is the only place that answer appears.

Placements

A job at the end is the exception rather than the rule at Midnapore, and the college does not hide it. Its NIRF return sets out three graduating cohorts, and the shape barely shifts across them.

Cohort graduatingFinished in minimum timePlacedMedian salary of those placedSelected for higher studies
2021-221,35855Rs 3,15,000438
2022-231,34540Rs 2,40,000582
2023-241,30163Rs 3,10,000776

The median package quoted around the internet for this college is real, but it describes the small group that took a job, not the cohort. Postgraduate outcomes lean the same way and further: in 2023-24, 411 students finished a two-year master's course in minimum time, 5 were placed at a median of Rs 3,15,000, and 310 went on to higher studies. If you are choosing this college, the honest planning assumption is a research degree, a state examination or a teaching career next, with a campus offer as a bonus rather than the plan.

Which students get those offers is the part the totals hide. The college publishes a named placement record reaching back to 2019, and roughly four in five entries on it come from one corner of the campus: the Bachelor of Computer Application, B.Sc. Computer Science and M.Sc. Computer Science, recruited by TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture and SentientGeeks. Outside computing the list thins to a scatter of names in Physical Education, Philosophy, History and Mathematics, most of them hired in 2025 into bank and non-banking finance roles through the college's tie-up with TATA Strive.

The placement cell is nonetheless active and specific about what it runs. It is coordinated by Dr Krishna Gopal Dhal and reachable at placement@midnaporecollege.ac.in, and its recent record includes on-campus drives by Accenture in September 2023 and October 2024, SentientGeeks in April 2024 and February 2025, Drishtee in March 2025, Mahanim India in 2025, and a joint drive for assistant and deputy manager posts at Axis, HDFC and ICICI banks in 2025, alongside an agreement with TATA Strive and a letter of understanding with the CSRBOX Foundation in collaboration with IBM SkillsBuild. Its own training courses report their conversion honestly: a four-month Python Django web development course in 2021 took 42 candidates, certified 23 and saw 20 placed, a three-month Flutter course in 2022 took 20, certified 12 and saw 8 placed, and a SpringBoot full-stack course begun in March 2022 enrolled 85 students.

Seat Matrix

The NIRF filing carries two numbers for each programme and they do not agree, because the sanctioned intake counts one year of seats while the student strength counts everybody in the building.

Programme groupSanctioned intakeStudents on the roll
Undergraduate, four-year1,420 in 2023-241,421
Undergraduate, three-year1,415 in 2022-232,847
Postgraduate, two-year460 in 2023-24913

Those first two rows describe one set of undergraduates, not two. The four-year degree took its first intake in 2023-24, the same year the three-year sanction dropped to zero, and the older cohort will keep running beside the new one until it finishes. Postgraduate intake was raised from 411 to 460 between 2022-23 and 2023-24, while the undergraduate sanction barely moved as the three-year degree handed over to the four-year one.

The subject-wise intake sheet shows what two shifts really mean in practice. Only eight subjects are taught twice over: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Microbiology and Nutrition each carry a morning intake and a day intake. Computer Science and Electronics are morning only; every arts subject is day only. For most applicants, then, the subject decides the shift, and the alternating merit rule that splits a cohort across shifts bites only in those eight.

Two other things stand out in the student count. Women are the larger group in both the postgraduate body, at 569 against 344, and the three-year undergraduate body, at 1,455 against 1,392. And the intake is overwhelmingly local: 2,834 of the 2,847 three-year undergraduates are from within West Bengal. The category-wise seat break-up is notified separately each cycle as a download on the admission page, and that is the sheet that decides a specific subject.

Rankings

The rank is carried by teaching, and held down by reputation.

NIRF 2025 parameterScore out of 100
Teaching, Learning and Resources71.94
Graduation Outcomes67.93
Outreach and Inclusivity57.14
Research and Professional Practice55.24
Perception14.70
Overall61.23

The clearest way to read that shape is against the college immediately above it. Stella Maris College for Women in Chennai finishes 41st on 61.25, two hundredths of a point ahead, with a perception score of 53.48 against Midnapore's 14.70 and a teaching score of 61.81 against Midnapore's 71.94. One of those colleges is famous and one is not, and they arrive at the same total from opposite directions. Whatever the framework is measuring when it scores teaching, learning and resources, this college has plenty of it and almost none of the name recognition that usually travels with it.

Departments

Departments here are not just administrative homes. An autonomous college writes its own syllabus, and at Midnapore that drafting happens subject by subject, which is why the department you join, rather than the college you applied to, settles what you spend three or four years reading.

FacultyDepartments
Humanities and social scienceBengali, English, Economics, Education, Hindi, History, Philosophy, Physical Education, Political Science, Sanskrit, Sociology
ScienceBotany, Chemistry, Computer Application, Computer Science, Electronics, Geography, Mathematics, Microbiology, Nutrition, Physiology, Physics, Statistics, Tourism and Aviation Management, Zoology

Above the departments sit two research centres, one for the sciences and one for arts and social science. The science centre was proposed to Vidyasagar University on the argument that most of the college's teachers already met the eligibility criteria to supervise doctoral scholars, and the Midnapore College Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Science was approved in 2017. That is why a college of this kind carries PhD application forms on its own notice board at all.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The campus carries a set of facilities that read less like a checklist and more like a hundred and fifty years of accumulation.

The one worth knowing about first is the museum, which the History department wanted from the moment it began teaching honours in 1958 and finally got in 2017 on the first floor of the extension north of Vivekananda Hall. It holds a Talpatar Punthi, a manuscript written on palm leaves with burnt-rice ink, tribal handicrafts collected from Jhargram, Kalighat patachitra, a cannon in use before the Sepoy Mutiny, and the college's own records of Rabindranath Tagore's blessing to its students in 1939 and of the students who beat British army men in the Amar Shield final of 1944.

Two of the science centres have real histories behind them. The N.C. Rana Sky Observation Centre was started on the 15th August, 1995 under the guidance of Professor Narayan Chandra Rana of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pune, with a physics teacher sent to Pune and to Bangalore for orientation; the centre took Rana's name in 1997, after his death the year before. The IAPT Centre for Scientific Culture, established on 4th Feb, 1993, was one of four the Indian Association of Physics Teachers proposed to set up at the four corners of the country, and it still opens on Saturdays and Sundays as a public laboratory for activity-based science teaching. A newer Centre for AI and Robotics has run workshops with IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur and a robotics course covering machine learning and the internet of things.

The rest is more ordinary and still specific. A language laboratory was built in 2010 on the ground floor of Rabindra Bhavan for the UGC-sponsored communicative English certificate course the English department had started the year before. The gymnasium occupies a hall on the ground floor of Netaji Bhaban and holds two multigyms of 16 and 18 stations, with a 20-station gym sanctioned at Rs 20 lakh by the West Bengal State Youth Welfare department; it is open to staff as well as students, and it keeps a high jump pit, which the college notes is rare in a college gymnasium. An NCC unit under 45 Bengal Battalion has run since 2015 with an intake capacity of 80 cadets, alongside NSS units doing community work around the campus.

Accessibility is one of the things the campus pages never mention and the NIRF return does. The college reports that more than 80% of its buildings carry a lift or a ramp and a specially designed toilet, and that it provides wheelchairs and moves students who need it from one building to another.

Hostel

Residence is the tightest constraint on this campus, and the numbers make that obvious.

The boys' hostel started in 1960 next to the college ground and has a current seat capacity of 63 across 22 rooms, 21 of them for boarding and one kept as a common room, with three boarders to a room and a cot, table and chair provided. The girls' hostel, named Kabi Nazrul Janma Satabarshiki Chhatri Nibas, was inaugurated on 5th September, 2000 by Pranab Kumar Mukherjee, then a member of the Rajya Sabha, and has an intake capacity of 120 across undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Set that against a roll in the thousands and the arithmetic is stark, so treat a room as something to compete for rather than something that comes with the seat. Allotment is for one academic session from July to June and is decided on merit and on how far the student lives from Midnapore, which is the rule that matters most: a local applicant is unlikely to be given a place. The hostel round has its own provisional and final lists, published on the same portal as the undergraduate ones, separately for boys and girls.

Two house rules are worth knowing before you apply. Charges are due monthly by the 25th, with a fine of Rs 50 a month for late payment, and a boarder who fails a college or university examination is not allowed to continue in the hostel the following session. Separate boys' and girls' fee structures and prospectuses go up on the admission page each cycle.

Faculty

NIRF puts 289 faculty members behind a student body the same filing counts as 2,847 three-year undergraduates, 1,421 four-year undergraduates and 913 postgraduates. For a college rather than a university that is a large teaching establishment, and it is the resource behind the score that carries the rank.

There is no public roll of those posts by rank or by subject; each department carries its own profiles instead. For an applicant that makes the college-wide headcount close to useless, and the only informative reading is a single department's page: who supervises research there, and what the group has published. The salary bill gives a rough sense of scale from the other direction: Rs 24,18,57,923 went on teaching and non-teaching salaries in 2023-24, against Rs 22,04,539 on new laboratory equipment and Rs 4,41,269 on the library in the same year.

Notable Alumni

The college's own eminent alumni list opens not with professors but with a roll of freedom fighters it records as martyrs, among them Dinesh Gupta, and it is the kind of list a college in Midnapore would be expected to keep given the district's part in the independence movement.

Beyond that the concentration is academic and scientific. The same list names Swapan Kumar Pati, a Bhatnagar awardee and professor at JNCASR Bengaluru; Kalipada Pahan, professor at Rush University in the United States; Dipanjan Pan of the University of Maryland Baltimore County; and a long line of professors at IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University and Vidyasagar University. It also records Sambhu Saha, described there as Rabindranath Tagore's personal photographer, Rear Admiral Bandhan Kr. Roy of the Indian Navy, and Raghunath Roy, a retired justice of the Calcutta High Court. The list is long and it is the college's own record, so those are the names it documents rather than a shortlist anyone else has verified.

News & Articles

The college runs its notice board as the live channel, and in the 2026-2027 cycle it carried the whole admission story in order: the UG admission schedule, the direct admission notices, document verification for UG 2026-27, an induction meeting for the first semester, and the OBC non-creamy-layer certificate deadline. It also posts research openings there, including an application form for the PhD programme in the sciences and in humanities and social sciences. If you are applying, that page rather than any aggregator is where a date changes first.

College Compare

Five other West Bengal colleges appear in the same NIRF 2025 top 100, and the comparison worth making is geographic before it is numerical.

CollegeCityNIRF 2025 rankScore
Rama Krishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary CollegeKolkata676.74

Ramakrishna Mission VidyamandiraHowrah1969.00

Midnapore CollegeMidnapore4261.23
Lady Brabourne CollegeKolkata4760.17

Every one of the others sits in the Kolkata and Howrah belt, and three of them are Ramakrishna Mission institutions. Midnapore College is the outlier on both counts: a large, aided, two-shift college in a district town, taking almost all its students from within the state. The parameter scores show what that costs it and where it does not. On outreach and inclusivity it takes 57.14, beating every college above it in that table except St. Xavier's; on perception it takes 14.70, the lowest of the six by a distance. Weighing this against a Kolkata name, perception is most of what the fee difference buys.

Contact & Location

The campus is on Raja Bazar in Midnapore town, in Paschim Medinipur district, and admission, placement and general enquiries go to three different addresses.

Approvals & Accreditation

Statutory approvals and accreditation grades from official bodies.

Autonomy is the recognition doing real work here. The UGC conferred autonomous status from the session 2014-2015, and before that the college held College with Potential for Excellence status twice, in 2010 and 2014, and a special heritage status in 2015. Those designations are what allow it to design its own courses and examine its own students.

On NAAC the honest answer is that no current cycle could be confirmed. The college's own history records three successive accreditations, an A+ in 2004, an A with a CGPA of 3.58 in 2012 and an A+ with a CGPA of 3.60 in 2017, and the admission portal still prints that grade and that CGPA in its page banner. But the NAAC section of the college site holds only scanned certificate images with no cycle number and no validity date, its peer-team and events tabs both read "Data will be added soon", and the most recent cycle the college itself dates is the one from 2017. Read that grade as a historical record, not a live status, and if current accreditation matters to your decision, and for a postgraduate applicant or a scholarship claim it can, ask the Internal Quality Assurance Cell for the certificate and its validity dates in writing.

Aid

Scholarships

Student aid is unusually well documented for a college of this size, and the volume is the story. In the 2020-21 session the college recorded 4,257 scholarship recipients across 15 schemes, and the table for the following session on the same page is still empty, so that remains the most recent count it has published.

SchemeRecipients in 2020-21
Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship2,165
Post Matric Scholarship, SC/ST/OBC stipend856
INSPIRE Scholarship376
National Scholarship Portal schemes353

Chief Minister's Relief Fund73
S.J. Jindal Trust Scholarship56
Biswabina Foundation Scholarship26
Stipend of Auqaf Board, West Bengal17
All 15 schemes together4,257

Almost all of that is government money, and most of it is state money: the Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship alone accounts for 2,165 of the 4,257 awards. Apply to the state and central schemes in your own right, on time, rather than waiting for the college to route you into one.

Separately the college holds a long list of endowments funded by its own alumni and teachers, each paying an award out of annual bank interest. The largest recent gift is Rs 10,50,000 given in 2021 by an alumnus for poor and meritorious students, and one endowment of Rs 2,00,000 exists purely to send students to the Indian Science Congress. These are small, subject-specific and awarded on marks, so ask your department head which ones your subject is eligible for.

Voices

Student Reviews

No rating is published here, because none of the ratings available for this college say which students they polled. A campus running morning and day shifts, three-year and four-year undergraduate cohorts in parallel, and 22 honours subjects has no single student experience for one decimal to describe, and a science honours student in a laboratory subject and an arts student admitted in a direct-admission round are not describing the same college.

Three questions get further than any score. If your subject is one of the sciences taught twice over, ask a current student whether the morning and day sections get the same teachers. Ask whether their subject appeared in the June top-up round, because that tells you how contested the seat really was. And ask how the examination calendar has held since autonomy, since the college now sets its own dates and declares its own results.
