Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Reserch Academy (sastra), Thanjavur

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu Est. 1984 Official site Updated
NIRF Engineering
#40

SASTRA Deemed University in Thanjavur is placed 29th among all universities in the government's NIRF 2025 University ranking, and the thing most families get wrong about it is the admission route: there is no SASTRA entrance exam to clear. Your B.Tech seat is worked out from your JEE Main score and your normalized Class 12 marks, and the fee is a per-semester figure the university prints openly on its own fee page rather than a lump sum an aggregator invents. Every number below is set next to the SASTRA or NIRF page it comes from, so you can check each one yourself.

Overview

SASTRA is the short name for Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy, a private deemed-to-be university whose main campus sits at Tirumalaisamudram, on the outskirts of Thanjavur in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu. It began as Shanmugha College of Engineering in 1984 and was conferred deemed university status by the Government of India on 26 April 2001, which is when the single engineering college grew into the multi-school university it is now.

The institution runs three campuses: the main Tirumalaisamudram campus at Thanjavur, the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre at Kumbakonam, and a campus at Chennai. On its own site SASTRA describes itself across 12 schools running 79 programmes, with more than 15,000 students, and it holds the top NAAC grade, a point the rankings section returns to. The name to keep straight is the spelling: it is Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy, and the deemed-university designation means its degrees are awarded by SASTRA itself, not by an affiliating state university.

Courses & Fees

SASTRA teaches through schools rather than a single faculty, and the bulk of the demand sits with the B.Tech programmes run out of its engineering schools. What sets it apart from many private universities is that it publishes the tuition figure openly. On the main Thanjavur campus, B.Tech and the five-year integrated M.Tech carry a tuition of Rs 85,000 per semester, with a 5% annual increase from the second year; the same page lists the integrated law degrees at Rs 75,000 a semester and the two-year MBA and M.Tech at Rs 70,000 a semester.

Programme (Thanjavur campus)Tuition per semesterNotes
B.Tech / 5-year integrated M.TechRs 85,0005% annual increase from year 2
BA LLB / BBA LLB / B.Com LLB (Hons)Rs 75,0005-year integrated, 5% annual increase
MBARs 70,000Two-year programme
M.Tech (2-year)Rs 70,000GATE-qualified students get a Rs 12,400 monthly stipend
MCARs 50,000
B.OptomRs 55,000Run with Dr. Agarwal's institute
B.Com (CA) / B.Com (BFSI)Rs 40,000

On top of tuition, the fee page adds a one-time development fee of Rs 10,000, a special fee of Rs 6,000 at admission, and an annual sports and unit-test fee of Rs 1,000. The Kumbakonam and Chennai campuses price their arts, science and commerce degrees lower, from Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 a semester, so the campus you join changes the bill. Read the current fee page for your exact programme before you budget, since the amount rises each year of the course.

Admissions

You do not sit a SASTRA-specific entrance test. For B.Tech, the university fills its seats in two streams: Stream 1 covers 70% of seats and is decided on a mix of your JEE Main score and your Class 12 marks, weighted 25% to the JEE Main score and 75% to normalized +2 marks; Stream 2 covers the remaining 30% and is decided on +2 marks alone. That is unusual: a strong board result can carry you into SASTRA through Stream 2 even without a standout JEE Main rank, which is exactly what the "can I join without an entrance exam" question is really asking.

Within each stream, SASTRA also applies a home-region split, offering 20% of the intake to students from the Trichy and Thanjavur districts, 50% to those who did their Class 10 and 12 in Tamil Nadu or Puducherry, and 30% to students schooled outside Tamil Nadu. Postgraduate engineering and management seats go on the qualifying degree and a written test, with preference to GATE-qualified candidates, while the arts and science degrees admit on qualifying-exam merit. The practical move is to register early on the SASTRA admissions portal and enter both your JEE Main score and your board marks, because the two streams read them differently.

Cutoff

SASTRA never announces a closing rank, and the reason is its merit maths, not secrecy. With Stream 1 weighting your normalized Class 12 marks at 75% against 25% for JEE Main, and Stream 2 ranking on board marks alone, the number that decides most applicants is a high +2 percentage rather than a JEE Main rank. SASTRA assembles that merit list in-house each year instead of pulling allotments from JoSAA, CSAB or Tamil Nadu's TNEA counselling, so no round-wise closing rank is ever published, and a "SASTRA cutoff" posted on a forum is only a back-estimate of where one branch happened to settle. Computing branches such as CSE and AI and Data Science fill first, so a board score near the top of your board's range is what a competitive application looks like here.

Placements

SASTRA puts out no audited placement report, no average package and no highest package on any primary page, so a CTC figure quoted for it on an aggregator has nothing official underneath it. Its placement cell runs the recruiter drives and names the companies that hire on campus, but the salary numbers students most want are not published in a form you can check.

The one placement-linked figure that sits inside a government ranking rather than a brochure is SASTRA's Graduation Outcomes score of 74.04 in the NIRF 2025 University ranking, the strongest of its five University parameters. NIRF derives that from the share of a cohort that graduates on time and moves into a job or further study, drawn from data the university must submit rather than curate, which makes it far harder to inflate than a headline package. If a salary number is going to swing your decision, write to the SASTRA placement office for the audited figures for the year that matters to you.

Seat Matrix

SASTRA releases no consolidated seat matrix, and no central body releases one for it, because it fills every B.Tech seat through its own two-stream process instead of the JoSAA, CSAB or Tamil Nadu TNEA pools that would otherwise publish one. What decides who lands which branch is the allotment already set out under admissions: 70% of seats through the JEE-plus-board stream and 30% through the board-only stream, and inside both the home-region split that keeps 20% for the Thanjavur and Trichy belt, 50% for the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and 30% for students schooled elsewhere. Branch-wise sanctioned intake is reset every admission cycle and appears only on SASTRA's own admission pages, so plan against the figure published for the year you apply.

Rankings

SASTRA's standing is unusually broad for a single-campus private deemed university, because it is ranked in four separate NIRF 2025 tables rather than one. It is 29th among universities and 51st overall, its engineering wing is 40th, and its law school is 11th, which is its strongest placement and a genuinely high rank for a private law faculty.

The University score of 58.06 breaks down in a way worth reading before you choose SASTRA over a bigger-name option.

NIRF 2025 University parameterSASTRA score
Graduation Outcomes74.04
Teaching, Learning and Resources71.76
Outreach and Inclusivity71.78
Research and Professional Practice36.50
Perception35.92

The profile is that of a strong teaching university: graduation outcomes, teaching resources and outreach are the three parameters holding the total up, while perception sits well below them, which tells you the rank is earned on measured teaching and outcomes rather than on how loudly the brand is known.

Its NAAC accreditation reinforces that read: SASTRA holds an A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.76 in the fourth assessment cycle, the top band the council awards.

Departments

SASTRA teaches through named schools that each confer their own degrees, so a bioengineering student and a five-year law student sit under entirely separate faculties on the same Thanjavur campus. The academic pages group the programmes as follows.

SchoolWhat it runs
Chemical and BiotechnologyB.Tech in Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering, plus M.Tech and M.Sc streams
ComputingB.Tech CSE and its specialisations (AI and Data Science, Cyber Security, IoT), IT, ICT, plus M.Tech and MCA
Electrical and Electronics EngineeringB.Tech EEE, ECE, Instrumentation, VLSI and Robotics and AI
Mechanical EngineeringB.Tech Aerospace, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Industrial Engineering
Civil EngineeringB.Tech Civil, with M.Tech Structural Engineering
LawFive-year integrated BA LLB, BBA LLB and B.Com LLB
ManagementMBA, with B.Com in Computer Applications and BFSI
Arts, Science, Humanities and EducationIntegrated B.Sc B.Ed, M.Sc programmes and a five-year integrated MA in Sanskrit

Optometry is run separately, in collaboration with Dr Agarwals Institute of Optometry, offering B.Optom and M.Optom. Because intake differs sharply from one school to the next, the seat count for a computing branch tells you nothing about the intake for the integrated MA in Sanskrit, so check the admission page of the exact school you are applying to for its current sanctioned strength.

Facilities & Infrastructure

The main SASTRA campus is a residential one at Tirumalaisamudram, a short distance from Thanjavur town, with the teaching blocks, laboratories, library and hostels of a full deemed university. On its own site SASTRA states it runs 23 research centres across its schools, which is the infrastructure that underpins the research-heavy engineering and biotechnology programmes. Beyond the Thanjavur campus, the Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre at Kumbakonam and the Chennai campus carry their own teaching facilities.

Where SASTRA is less forthcoming is the day-to-day detail: no primary page lays out the hostel blocks, the library's collection or the sports amenities precisely enough to restate with confidence, so the honest move is to confirm the residential and laboratory setup for your specific campus and course with the university before you accept a seat.

Hostel

Faculty

Teaching at SASTRA sits under the individual schools, so the staff teaching your B.Tech branch belong to the relevant engineering school while a management elective is taught from the School of Management. On its own site the university states a strength of more than 975 faculty across its schools.

A headcount cannot tell you how good the teaching is, and the nearest outside gauge of that is where SASTRA lands on the teaching leg of the NIRF 2025 University ranking: a Teaching, Learning and Resources score of 71.76, one of its higher parameters and well clear of its research and perception marks. For the specific subject you want, read that school's own faculty page, which names each member with a designation and a research area, since a strong overall score can still sit on top of an uneven spread across departments.

Notable Alumni

SASTRA does not maintain a public, verifiable roll of well-known graduates that stands up to checking, and the names floated on listing sites are not something a primary source confirms, so this section stays empty rather than lending weight to an unsourced claim. If a particular graduate's link to SASTRA is part of why you are considering it, the alumni office is the place to have that association confirmed before you rely on it.
