Overview
About VEP
The Vocational Education Programme runs vocational courses alongside the regular academic subjects for students of classes 9 to 12 in selected government secondary schools in Uttarakhand. The state Department of Education delivers it under the vocational education component of Samagra Shiksha, the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Ministry of Education that folds skill training into school education.
Courses follow the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) and cover eight sectors approved by the Government of India: Agriculture, Automotive, Beauty and Wellness, Electronics and Hardware, IT, Plumbing, Retail, and Tourism and Hospitality. The curriculum for the NSQF job roles is developed by the Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), a constituent unit of NCERT, in consultation with the Sector Skill Councils. At the secondary stage the vocational subject is taught as an additional subject; at the senior secondary stage it is an elective.
The benefit comes in kind, not as a cash payment. Enrolled students get classroom and laboratory training from qualified trainers and earn NSQF competency certificates for the trade they study. The intent is to pair a practical, employable skill with academic study so a student leaves school with a recognised qualification in a trade sector.
The programme is meant for students in the government secondary schools in Uttarakhand where these vocational courses are offered. What is available depends on the school and the sectors assigned to it, so check with your school for the courses running there.
