Admission Process in All Government and Non-Government Schools of the State(APAGNGSS)
Overview
About APAGNGSS
Uttarakhand's Department of Education runs this state scheme to keep the first eight years of school free for children in Class 1 to 8, in both government and non-government schools across the state. The Basic Education Department administers it, and admission to Class 1 opens every year in April.
The support comes in kind rather than as cash. Alongside free schooling, children receive textbooks and a meal at school. The meal follows India's national midday meal programme, now called PM POSHAN, which serves a cooked lunch on working days to primary and upper-primary children in government and government-aided schools.
The scheme is meant for individual students in Class 1 through 8 within Uttarakhand. In government schools the education is free for every enrolled child; in non-government schools, free places come through the Right to Education Act, 2009, which reserves a quarter of seats up to Class 8 for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged families. The aim is to lower the cost that might otherwise push a child out of school before completing elementary education.
