Overview

About YEC

The Youth and Eco Club (YEC) is a school programme in Uttarakhand, run by the Secondary Education Department of the Government of Uttarakhand under the Samagra Shiksha programme. It sets up an environment club inside government schools, where students take up green activities through the year.

The aim is to build environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students. Clubs run activities such as plastic reduction drives, kitchen gardening, tree plantation, cleanliness campaigns and composting of food waste, along with poster-making, skits and slogan-writing competitions that draw students in. The benefit is in kind: the school organises the programmes, so what reaches a student is participation and learning rather than a cash payment.

There is no separate selection process. All primary, upper-primary and secondary government schools in Uttarakhand are covered, and each club is anchored by its school, so students take part through their school rather than by applying on their own. Private schools do not take part.
