Weekly Iron Folic Acid Tablets Free Distribution - Uttarakhand(WIFATFD)
Overview
About WIFATFD
This scheme is Uttarakhand's delivery of the Weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation programme. It is run by the state Medical, Health and Family Welfare Department, and under it teachers hand out free iron and folic acid tablets each Monday to students enrolled in government and government-aided schools across the state. The benefit is in kind: the tablets are provided at no cost, with no cash component.
The wider programme sits under the National Health Mission and was launched by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to reduce the prevalence and severity of anaemia among school-age children and adolescents. Its design pairs a supervised weekly iron and folic acid tablet, given on a fixed day, with deworming twice a year. The Uttarakhand roll-out uses Monday as that fixed distribution day inside schools.
In practice the scheme reaches children through the classroom, so the teacher acts as the point of distribution rather than a health worker. The national programme also covers out-of-school adolescents through Anganwadi centres, but this state scheme is focused on students already enrolled in government and government-aided schools.
