Overview

About VS

Vidya is a state-level girl child education incentive run by the Education Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. It is aimed at a girl studying in Class VI, the point from which the scheme works to keep her enrolled through the secondary years.

The benefit is cash of Rs. 10,000, but it does not reach the student as a lump payment. The department opens a fixed deposit with the State Bank of India in the girl's own name, and the money stays locked, with no premature withdrawal, until she completes Class XII and can draw the matured amount. Tying the payout to the finish line is the whole design: the state wants girls to stay in class through the elementary and secondary stages and to bring the dropout rate down.

To qualify, a student must be an unmarried girl enrolled in a school in Arunachal Pradesh, hold a valid Class V passing certificate, and have an active savings account with the State Bank of India. The incentive, fixed at Rs. 10,000 since 2015-16, is a one-time award paid on successful completion of Class XII.
