About Vnmatv
The Vasantrao Naik Merit Awards recognise students from the Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) category in Maharashtra who stand first in the state, or first in their board, in the Class 10 (SSC) or Class 12 (HSC) examination. The scheme is run by the Government of Maharashtra through the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, the state's nodal department for the welfare of VJNT and other disadvantaged groups.
This is a merit award rather than a recurring scholarship, and the benefit is given in kind. The recipient receives a trophy and a certificate: the trophy carries a stated value of ₹1,00,000 for a student who stands first in the state and ₹51,000 for one who stands first in a board. One boy and one girl are recognised at each level, in both the SSC and HSC examinations.
The award is intended to motivate high-scoring VJNT students to continue into higher education. Eligibility is limited to students who hold VJNT category status and who secure first rank in the state, or first in their board, in the Class 10 or Class 12 examination, with the first-ranked boy and the first-ranked girl each qualifying.
