Overview

About TC

Tiatr is a Konkani-language theatre form that has been staged in Goa for well over a century, pairing acting with song and live music. The Tiatr Competition is a state scheme run by the Directorate of Art and Culture, part of Goa's Department of Art, Culture and Museums, and its aim is to encourage and promote this Goan stage tradition.

The scheme runs at the state level, and its support takes the form of a cash award for participating productions. Each cycle, entries are called for through press notes published in local dailies, so troupes watch the newspapers rather than apply on a rolling basis.

Participation is open to Goan institutions registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, whose registration is current. In practice that means societies enter productions, not individual performers applying on their own. The Directorate of Art and Culture, together with its Tiatr Academy of Goa, set up in 2009, runs several tiatr competitions and festivals of this kind to keep the art form active across the state.
