Is this the same as the Popular Tiatr Competition run by the Tiatr Academy of Goa?

No. The Popular Tiatr Competition is a Tiatr Academy of Goa scheme with its own rules: it is judged in named auditoriums across Goa, from Ravindra Bhavan in Margao to Hanuman Natyagraha in Mapusa, and a tiatr qualifies only after completing at least 5 performances including Kantaram in the stated period (Tiatr Academy of Goa schemes). The Kala Academy competition asks for none of that, and its entry route is the press note plus the counter at Campal.

What actually separates the "A" Group from the "B" Group?

Access, not quality of script. Kala Academy names the "A" Group institutions in the entry notice and directs every other interested group to the "B" Group (entries for the 47th "A" Group and 7th "B" Group competitions). The prize scale differs between the two groups, and the fee and deposit do not.

Can an individual tiatrist enter?

Schools do not enter through Kala Academy.

Where and when are the results published?

On the Kala Academy site, as a downloadable notice, usually within weeks of the final show. About TC

When Kala Academy Goa invited entries for the 51st Tiatr Competition, its press note did not open the door to every registered institution in Goa. It printed the names of the societies eligible for the "A" Group and left everyone else to the "B" Group competition that runs alongside it. That two-track structure, rather than the prize list, is what decides where a Goan tiatr troupe actually files its form, and it is the part the scheme record does not spell out.

The "A" Group contest has run past its fiftieth edition: the results Kala Academy published for 2025-26 are headed as the 51st (Results of the 51st Tiatr "A" Group Competition 2025-26). The "B" Group is much younger. Kala Academy staged its 11th edition from 19 February to 5 March 2026 at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir in Panaji, with 06 tiatr groups performing nightly at 7.00 p.m. (Programme of the 11th Tiatr "B" Group Competition).

Two academies run tiatr contests in Goa and they are not the same body. Kala Academy Goa runs this scheme under the Art, Culture and Museums Department. The Tiatr Academy of Goa runs its own separate competitions, including the Popular Tiatr Competition and the Children's Tiatr Competition, under rules published in the state's citizen charter (Tiatr Academy of Goa schemes). Entering one does not enter you in the other.

The scheme publishes no fixed calendar, and the dates move by several weeks between editions. What holds steady is the shape: "B" Group entries close first and stage in winter, "A" Group entries close in January and stage in March, and results follow within about a month of the last show.

Entries are announced through press notes in the local dailies and on the Academy's own site, so a society that is not watching either can miss a window that stays open for less than a week: the 50th "A" Group notice was issued in January and set the last date at 14th January 2025 (entries for the 50th Tiatr Competition in "A" Group).

Eligibility criteria

The gate is institutional, not personal. The applicant is a Goan institution registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and Kala Academy requires the registration or renewal certificate to be attached to the entry form as demanded by Sub Section (2) of Section 3 B of the Act 1860, Central Act, 21 of 1860 (51st Tiatr Competition in "A" Group 2025-26). A troupe that exists as an informal group of artistes has nothing to attach.

Which group you may enter is decided for you. Kala Academy names the institutions eligible for the "A" Group in the entry press note itself, and the same note tells everyone else where to go: when entries opened for the 47th "A" Group competition in 2021-22, the notice listed 14 eligible groups and stated that apart from those, other interested groups can submit their entry in the "B" Group tiatr competition (entries for the 47th "A" Group and 7th "B" Group competitions). A first-time society is therefore a "B" Group entrant by default, whatever the strength of its script.

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

Two rules do the work an exclusion list would, and neither is printed as one. The first is Kala Academy's own discretion: it reserves the right to accept or reject the entries of any institution whose entry does not befit the rules and regulations of the competition (51st "A" Group entry notice), and an entry that arrives after 4.00 p.m. on the stated last date is outside the window rather than late.

There is also a cross-scheme bar worth knowing before a troupe plans its season. The Tiatr Academy of Goa's Popular Tiatr Competition rules state that Kantaram presented in the Kala Academy Tiatr Competitions shall not be allowed in the Popular Tiatr Competition, unless a tiatr from the Kala Academy competition is itself admitted there (Tiatr Academy of Goa schemes). Songs are not freely reusable across the two contests.

Renewal conditions

Nothing renews. Each edition is entered afresh with a new form, a new fee and a current registration certificate, which is why Kala Academy asks for the renewal certificate "as the case may be" every year (51st "A" Group entry notice).

One layer of recognition sits below the cash and does not appear in the scheme's benefit list at all. Alongside every individual prize the judges issue merit certificates, and they are awarded generously: acting, negative role, comedian, child artiste, setting, light effects, music, make-up, costumes, background music, solo singing, comedy solo, choral cantar, duets, duos, trios, quartets and lyrics each carry their own certificate winners in the 51st results, while direction and script carry the cash prizes alone (Results of the 51st Tiatr "A" Group Competition 2025-26). For a young artiste, that is the realistic first return from the competition.

What a troupe takes from the gate moves with the ticket price, and that price is set edition by edition rather than by the scheme. For the 11th "B" Group competition Kala Academy announced tickets at Rs 100 and season passes at Rs 600, sold at its own ticket counter (Programme of the 11th Tiatr "B" Group Competition).

Prizes are not handed over on the closing night. Kala Academy holds a separate prize distribution function for the "A" and "B" Group tiatr competitions. The one for the 2023-24 competitions was held on 3 August 2024 at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir, with the Chairman of Kala Academy presiding and giving away the prizes (prize distribution function of Tiatr "A" and "B" Group Competition).

What to prepare

Documents required

Beyond the registration paperwork and the typed script and songs the scheme record asks for, the entry is only complete when money moves. Kala Academy accepts the duly filled entry form together with a cash remittance of the entry fee of Rs. 500 and a security deposit of Rs. 5,000, and both must be in by 4.00 p.m. on the last date (51st "A" Group entry notice). The wording is cash remittance, not a transfer, so someone from the institution has to be at the counter.

The forms themselves are not downloadable. A copy of the rules and regulations along with the entry forms is made available in the Programme and Development Section of Kala Academy from a date the press note announces, which for the 51st edition was 22 January 2026 (51st "A" Group entry notice).

How to apply

Collect the form in person, fill it, and hand it back with the certificate and the cash. Kala Academy accepts entries from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., excluding holidays (51st "A" Group entry notice). The address has moved with the Academy's own offices: the 50th "A" Group entries in 2024-25 were taken at Adil Shah Palace, Old Secretariat, Panaji (entries for the 50th Tiatr Competition in "A" Group), while the 51st notice directs applicants to Campal, Panaji.

Nothing about this entry can be tracked online. Kala Academy takes the form, the certificate and the cash across a counter, which leaves an applicant with no application number, no payment reference and no status screen to refresh. What replaces tracking is a fixed public sequence, and each step is announced. The draw to decide the sequence of performance by lots is taken at 5.00 p.m. on the same day entries close, at the Kala Academy meeting room, and any institution whose entry was accepted is in that draw (51st "A" Group entry notice). The staging programme follows as its own press note (Programme of the 11th Tiatr "B" Group Competition), and the result is published as a downloadable notice on the Academy's site (Result of the 11th Tiatr "B" Group Competition 2025-26). An institution that misses the draw date learns nothing by waiting; the Programme and Development Section takes queries on 2420450/51/52 from Monday to Friday during office working hours (51st "A" Group entry notice).

Selection process

A panel of judges watches the performances and its recommendation decides every prize. Kala Academy names the panel on the result notice itself, which for the 51st "A" Group competition listed three judges, Menino Fernandes, Mario Pereira and Vishwas Chari, and was signed at Panaji on 01/04/2026 (Results of the 51st Tiatr "A" Group Competition 2025-26).

Judging runs across the whole run of shows rather than a shortlist round, because every accepted entry gets to stage its tiatr in the sequence the draw fixed. The consolation award is the one prize the scheme ties to the size of the field, and the 51st result names a single winner of it, Kala Mogi, Orda Candolim, for 75 Not Out (Results of the 51st Tiatr "A" Group Competition 2025-26).

Fine print

Terms & conditions

The security deposit is not a formality. Only those institutions withdrawing within the stipulated 5 days will be eligible for a refund of their security deposit (51st "A" Group entry notice). An institution that pulls out later forfeits the Rs. 5,000 it paid in.

The same condition has held across editions and across both groups, appearing word for word in the "B" Group notice for the 10th competition, whose entries closed on 04.12.2024 for a competition held from January 2025 (10th "B" Group entry notice). The auditorium and its permissible infrastructure come free under the scheme, but anything beyond that is charged at the Academy's own rates.
