Overview

About SEVTGI

Special Education and Vocational Training through Government Institutions is a Maharashtra state scheme run by the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department. It supports people with disabilities across two stages of life, schooling within the government special-school system and skills training once they reach adulthood.

Children with disabilities between the ages of 6 and 18 receive special education in government special schools, with teaching and support adapted to their needs. Those above the age of 18 move on to vocational training, so that a young person leaving school has a practical trade to build on. The benefit is composite, pairing an education stage with a training stage rather than a single cash payout.

The scheme is open to permanent residents of Maharashtra who have a certified disability, and applications are made to the concerned government institution. For eligible children, the government special-school route provides free education together with food, lodging and clothing, so that cost is not a barrier to attending.
