Special Education - Tamil Nadu(SETN)
Overview
About SETN
Special Education is a state welfare scheme run by the Department for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Government of Tamil Nadu, which was set up as a separate directorate in 1993 for the rehabilitation and welfare of differently abled persons. The department runs a network of government special schools across the state, and the scheme provides free schooling and training rather than a cash grant.
The support is given in kind. Children enrolled in the government special schools receive free special education and vocational training, with boarding and lodging at no cost, and free uniforms and textbooks are provided each year. For visually and hearing impaired students, the department also offers items such as readers' allowances, assistive devices and free travel on government buses alongside their schooling.
The scheme is meant for differently abled children who are residents of Tamil Nadu, covering visual, hearing, intellectual and locomotor disabilities. A parent or guardian applies on the child's behalf, with admissions handled through the District Differently Abled Welfare Officer or the headmaster of a government special school.
