Overview

About SHST

Senior Hostel (Scheduled Tribes) is a state welfare scheme run by the Tribal Welfare and Scheduled Caste (SC) Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh. It gives Scheduled Tribe students free hostel accommodation together with mess facilities while they study at the secondary and higher secondary level. The benefit is in kind, a place to stay and daily meals, rather than a cash payment.

The scheme is for ST students in Class 9 to Class 12 who are enrolled in a government or recognised school in the state. By running residential hostels near schools, the department works to keep the distance and cost of travel from ending a tribal student's schooling before Class 12.

Students are admitted to the hostels and ashrams the department operates against its sanctioned seats, so meeting the eligibility conditions does not on its own guarantee a place in a given year. Applications are handled online through MPTAAS, the state's tribal affairs automation portal, which the Tribal Welfare Department uses for its ST, SC and OBC student schemes.
