The Scheme of Free Supply of Textbooks, Stationery, Uniforms and Footwears is a Government of Puducherry programme that gives school children their basic study materials at no cost. The support is in kind, so the government supplies the physical items directly rather than paying the family a cash grant.
The items covered include textbooks, notebooks, dictionaries, stationery, uniforms and footwear. Its stated objective is to lift school enrolment towards 100% by taking the everyday cost of these materials off families for whom it is a barrier.
Coverage runs from LKG through Class 12 for students enrolled in the Union Territory's Government and Government-aided private schools. The scheme is run by the Government of Puducherry, under its Labour Department, and the benefit reaches the student as supplied goods rather than a reimbursement to claim later.
