About TIHCDOHS
"Training in Handicrafts" is one component of the wider Development of Handicrafts scheme, run by the District Industries Centre under the Industries and Commerce Department of the Government of Puducherry. Its stated purpose is to build craft skills that lead to better employment and a steadier livelihood for the rural poor, and to keep alive trades that are at risk of dying out.
The programme uses a Gurukulam model. A trainee learns a craft inside its own working environment, under a selected master craftsman, rather than in a classroom. Young residents of the Union Territory train through a structured course and receive a monthly stipend for the duration, so they can pick up a trade without giving up an income while they learn.
myScheme records the support as a composite benefit, which means the skill training comes paired with financial help rather than one instead of the other. It is meant for individuals who are native to Puducherry or have lived in the territory for the required period; the exact age limits, stipend and residency terms are set by the scheme. The Development of Handicrafts scheme also runs an advanced track, under which candidates can be sponsored to learn from craft centres in other states.

| The applicant should be a native of the Union Territory of Puducherry or a continuous resident for the past three years. | |

What you get
Award & benefits
- Trainees will receive a stipend of ₹1,500 per month.
- Master craftspersons will be compensated with an honorarium of ₹300 per trainee (up to ₹3,000 per month), and ₹150 per trainee per month for raw material wastage (up to ₹1,500 per month).
- The Training commences in December and is for a period of 6 months.
