Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme(PMSS)

PMSS repeats one calendar every cycle instead of announcing scheme-specific dates, which is why the myScheme record lists no close date. The rhythm itself is published by KSB.

The August advertisement is the trigger to act on, because the two deadlines interlock: a student admitted in December is outside the qualifying window and has no later chance, since the scheme takes first-year applicants only. Renewal filings follow each year's result declaration instead of this calendar.

Three tests decide it, and none of them is an income test. The family test: the applicant must be the dependent ward or the widow of an ex-serviceman or ex-Coast Guard member, and KSB's FAQ on new applications restricts the scheme to families of personnel below officer rank (PBOR). The stage test: the student must be in the first year of the course, admitted in the current financial year, and KSB's FAQ narrows the qualifying admission to the window of 01 Apr to 30 Nov; a student past the first year can apply only where the admission itself is a lateral entry. The marks test: 60% or more in the minimum educational qualification (MEQ), which is 10+2 for a course like MBBS, a diploma or 10+2 for engineering, and graduation for MBA or B.Ed.

Two calculation rules trip up applicants who technically clear the bar. The 60% is computed over every subject on the mark sheet, optional subjects included, not over a best-of set. And a student whose university issues only CGPA has to upload the university's own percentage-conversion formula with the mark sheet; a self-made conversion is not accepted.

The course itself must be on KSB's approved list, which runs to 114 serials in the authorised course list: professional first degrees from B.Tech, MBBS and BDS through nursing, pharmacy, law, hotel management and design, integrated dual degrees, and a final catch-all serial for any professional degree a government regulatory body recognises, provided the regulator's certificate is uploaded.

The hardest line is the service one. Wards of civilians and of paramilitary personnel are out, and so are the families of Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles personnel, but for a reason worth knowing: CAPF and Assam Rifles families have their own Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme, applied for on the National Scholarship Portal, as that scheme's official FAQ sets out. Applying to the KSB scheme with a CAPF service record wastes the application; the NSP one is the correct queue.

Beyond that, the exclusions follow the scheme's design as a first-degree incentive inside India. Students already past the first year, students at institutions abroad, distance-education and vocational students, and postgraduate courses other than MBA and MCA all fall outside it. A student who has drawn PMSS once, for any course, cannot draw it again; KSB's FAQ is categorical that the scholarship attaches to one course in a lifetime.

PMSS is paid year by year, and its renewal rules are harsher than the headline figure suggests. The student must score 50% in each semester or academic year, and KSB's renewal FAQ answers add the rule that catches the most students: every subject, semester and year has to be cleared in the first attempt. A back paper cleared later, or an RA in a single subject, closes the scholarship for good; there is no reinstatement after a repeat attempt. The money keeps flowing for the full approved duration of the course, with the internship period excluded.

The renewal filing runs on results, not on the calendar. When each academic year's result is declared, the student applies online again on the KSB website with the original university mark sheets of both semesters; computer-generated mark sheets are rejected, and a university that issues sheets only at the end of the whole course has a separate certificate, Annexure-4, to cover the gap.

One renewal-side obligation is easy to miss and expensive to ignore. After each installment arrives, the student must log in and record the date of payment and the amount received in Column 14 of the renewal application, per KSB's renewal instructions in the FAQ. KSB states that skipping this acknowledgement leads to cancellation and recovery of money already paid. A student who never claims a year's installment by filing the Payment-cum-Renewal form has the case closed forever.

The award is a monthly rate paid out once a year as a single credit. The girls' rate has sat above the boys' rate in both the old and the revised slabs.

Payment goes by ECS straight into the student's own bank account, per the DESW page, and the account must be seeded with the student's Aadhaar before any money moves. The tenure follows the course: a three-year BCA earns three annual credits, an MBBS earns them across its longer span, always minus the internship year. There is no separate book grant, hostel component or fee waiver riding on top; the monthly rate is the whole benefit.

The published document list is long, but rejections cluster around four specific uploads, so treat these as the checklist inside the checklist. First, the ex-serviceman certificate (Annexure-1) must be signed by the Zila Sainik Board or Coast Guard headquarters; the discharge book, which most families reach for first, is expressly not required and does not substitute, per KSB's application FAQ. Second, the Aadhaar-link certificate (Annexure-3) has to be signed by the bank confirming the seeding, which means a branch visit before the deadline, not after. Third, the bank passbook's first page must show the student's name and account number in print; a handwritten passbook page fails. Fourth, the bonafide certificate (Annexure-2) accepts signatures only from the institute's senior officers, from Principal and Dean up to Vice Chancellor, so a certificate signed by a head of department has the wrong signature on it.

KSB warns that failure to upload any listed document leads to rejection outright, and the categories tied to casualty or gallantry need their service-record proof (Part II Order, Gen Form, POR or the award's gazette notification) scanned from originals.

The application never touches the National Scholarship Portal. It also does not begin with the student: the ex-serviceman, the widow or the orphan registers on the KSB website, the system emails a login ID, a password and an activation link, and the PMSS application is then filled under that login, per the KSB FAQ. Hard-copy applications are not entertained at any stage.

One dashboard status deserves translation, because KSB answers it in its own FAQ: an application showing "New" has not been submitted at all. It is still sitting in the applicant's dashboard waiting for the save-and-forward click, and it will not be processed until that happens. After submission, the same login is the tracking tool; KSB publishes the application's progress in the student's database view and posts a Status of Application link on the site itself. Selection is announced the same way: the finalised merit list goes up on the KSB website and is forwarded to every Rajya Sainik Board, so a family can also check with the state board's office.

KSB additionally runs a Facebook account under the name "Pmscholarship scheme", which it uses to answer queries and post cycle updates; treat it as a notice board, and route anything involving your bank details only through the official email channel.

Selection has two sorting keys and no interview. On scrutiny of applications, KSB generates the merit list by the priority category of the family's service case, Category 1 to Category 6, and within that by the percentage of marks in the MEQ, with separate lists prepared for male and female students, as the selection rule on the KSB site states. In practice that means a ward from a battle-casualty family ranks ahead of a higher-scoring ward from a retired-service family, because the category outranks the marks.

The published numbers say the odds are workable but not comfortable, and remarkably stable year to year. An intake summary from the last three published cycles shows how the fresh list holds at the sanctioned strength while fresh applications run at more than double that strength.

Read the gap between the eligible column and the awards column as the merit cut: several thousand eligible applicants a year miss the list, and a category-first sort pushes that cut into the last priority category, where marks alone separate candidates.

Four standing conditions shape how far the scholarship stretches across a family and a course. Only two wards of one ex-serviceman can hold PMSS, per KSB's FAQ; a third child has no route in. Each student gets the scholarship for one course only, ever, so abandoning a funded course spends the family member's single chance. A selected student may change course within the first year, provided the new course is on the approved list; from the second year the change needs the specific provisions KSB publishes in its application instructions. And Aadhaar seeding of the student's bank account is mandatory for payment, so an unseeded account silently stalls a scholarship that was otherwise won.

The acknowledgement duty sits here too: recording each payment in Column 14 of the renewal application is a condition of the grant itself under the KSB FAQ, with cancellation and recovery as the stated consequence of default.

For paperwork that needs a signature, the Zila Sainik Board of your district is the physical touchpoint; it signs Annexure-1, while the finalised merit list is forwarded to the Rajya Sainik Boards at state level.

KSB's phishing warning belongs in this section because the scheme's payouts attract impersonators: do not respond to unsolicited calls or emails asking for bank or personal details, and treat jdpmssksb-mod@gov.in as the only official PMSS email identity.
