About PRLJRF

The PRL Junior Research Fellowship is the door into doctoral research at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad. A candidate applies as a fresh postgraduate, joins on a monthly fellowship, sits through prescribed pre-PhD coursework, and only then settles into a research problem. It is an admission, not a recruitment, and the difference decides almost everything a first-time applicant needs to know.

PRL runs the fellowship as one competition spread over seven named science domains, and the applicant ticks a discipline preference on the form rather than writing to a prospective supervisor first (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). Three of the seven, geosciences, space and atmospheric sciences, and planetary sciences and space exploration, carry an extra condition on which national test qualification is admissible, so the domain you want and the exam you hold have to be settled together rather than one after the other.

There is a genuine mismatch worth stating plainly. The myScheme listing files the scheme under the Ministry of Science and Technology while its own department field reads Department of Space (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships). Every page on PRL's own website carries the line that the laboratory is a unit of the Department of Space, Government of India, and the fellowship rates on the JRF page are described as governed by Department of Space guidelines (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). Where the two disagree, PRL's own description of itself is the one to work from; the myScheme ministry tag looks like a classification artefact rather than a second funder.

The programme is old enough to be judged on output. PRL's annual report for 2024-25 records that around 500 research scholars have obtained a PhD since the laboratory's inception, that 26 new JRFs joined in that year, and that 27 senior research fellows were awarded the doctorate (PRL Annual Report 2024-25).

A note on vintage, because the JRF sits astride a live page and a stale record. The rates, marks, age bar, subject list and window below are read off the JRF 2026 call as PRL published it; the myScheme record beside it still carries the previous cycle's wording, down to a 2024 reckoning date and a JEST 2024 score. The counts and the coursework come from PRL's 2024-25 annual report and its 2025 selection notice, and each is dated where it appears. Where PRL's live page and the myScheme entry disagree, this page follows PRL and says so.

The 2026 round has closed. Applications opened in April, the last date was extended into May, and the interviews were held in June, so an applicant reading this in the second half of 2026 is waiting for the next call rather than filling a form.

One caution about reading those dates off a single page. PRL's eligibility paragraph for the same round gives the application window as 05.04.2026 to 30.04.2026, while the portal box beneath it gives 02 April 2026 to 10 May 2026 and marks the closing date as extended (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). The portal box is the later statement and the one that carries the extension, so treat the eligibility paragraph as the original notice rather than a correction to it.

A myScheme listing outliving its round is the other trap. The record for this scheme publishes no opening or closing date at all and still describes the 2024 cycle, so a live-looking entry there is not evidence that PRL is accepting applications (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships). The JRF page on PRL's website is where a new window appears first.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Three things have to be true at once: the degrees, the marks, and a valid national test score. PRL asks for a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in science or engineering with at least first class, stated as 60%, or the equivalent grade at both levels, and restricts the fields to any branch of physics, engineering physics, photonics, space physics, atmospheric science, chemistry, environmental science, meteorology, geology, geophysics, earth science, oceanography and remote sensing (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

The national test is not optional and it is not a substitute for the degree. The 2026 call accepted CSIR-UGC-NET qualified as JRF or Assistant Professor from December 2024 onwards in physical sciences, chemical sciences or earth, atmospheric, ocean and planetary sciences; GATE from 2024 onwards in physics, geology and geophysics, atmospheric and oceanic sciences, chemistry or engineering sciences; JEST 2025 or 2026 in physics; and UGC-NET as JRF or Assistant Professor from December 2024 onwards in environmental sciences (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). PRL treats these as parallel routes, so one valid score is enough.

The environmental sciences route carries a rider that trips people. UGC-NET in environmental sciences is admissible only for applicants choosing geosciences, space and atmospheric sciences, or planetary sciences and space exploration, and for the last two, physics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level is compulsory (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

The age bar moves with the cycle rather than sitting still. For the 2026 call the upper limit was 28 years as on 01 July 2026, and applicants had to be Indian citizens who studied at recognised universities or institutes in India (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). The myScheme record still reads 01 July 2024, which is the reckoning date of an older round and not the current one.

Final-year MSc students are inside the net. PRL allows them to apply and to mark the postgraduate qualification as result awaited on the form, on the condition that the final examination is cleared before joining, failing which the selection is cancelled (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

PRL does not publish a list of excluded categories, but its own answers to applicant questions describe four situations in which the application will not stand.

A JEST score paired with a BTech and no Master's degree does not qualify, because the two-degree requirement is independent of the test (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). A CSIR-UGC-NET or UGC-NET result awarded in the PhD category, rather than as JRF or Assistant Professor, is also not admissible.

An applicant holding UGC-NET in environmental science who did not study physics at undergraduate and postgraduate level cannot choose space and atmospheric sciences (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). And there is no alternative test for someone who has cleared none of the accepted national examinations: PRL states directly that no such opening exists for postgraduates who have not qualified in one of them.

Procedure is treated as an eligibility condition in its own right. PRL places responsibility for meeting the notified criteria on the candidate and warns that any deviation from the stated procedures or time limits results in cancellation of candidature, with no representation entertained afterwards (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

Continuation

Renewal conditions

Nothing here is re-applied for from outside; continuation is decided inside PRL on the strength of the year's work. The fellowship of a research fellow is reviewed annually for continuation, and separately at the two-year mark the junior research fellow may be moved to senior research fellow on the recommendation of the competent authority (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

The second-year review is also the moment a fellow is considered for PRL's own top-up award, since the internal call for the Platinum Jubilee Research Fellowship goes to junior research fellows appearing for that review (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

Three amounts are in play, and only the first two apply to everyone.

The ATAL award is deliberately scarce. PRL instituted it to mark 75 years of the laboratory, provides for a maximum of two such fellowships each year, and pays it on top of the regular monthly fellowship for the third to the fifth year of the tenure (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). One phrase in that clause is left unexplained and should not be read past: PRL adds that the award "would be in-kind", without saying anywhere on the page what that converts into. Anyone counting on it as a second salary line is reading more into the sentence than PRL wrote.

What the JRF page does not carry is as worth knowing as what it does. It publishes the fellowship rate and nothing beside it, so there is no house rent allowance figure and no annual contingency grant on that page; the rates are simply attributed to Department of Space guidelines (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). Accommodation is treated the same way, with no terms published on the JRF page at all. The scheme's answers on myScheme go no further than saying hostel accommodation is limited and that external fellows do not get it, without defining who counts as external (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships), so a candidate budgeting for Ahmedabad rent has nothing published to budget against.

The degree at the end does not come from PRL. Because the laboratory is a research institution rather than a university, its scholars register for the doctorate at partner universities and IITs, and the coursework is shaped to meet both those institutions' requirements and University Grants Commission guidelines (PRL Annual Report 2024-25). That report also lists the doctorates completed in the year, 23 of them, naming the registering institution against each (PRL Annual Report 2024-25). Counting that list ourselves rather than quoting a PRL statistic, all but two were registered at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, with one at Gujarat University and one at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. It is a single year's list, not a rule about where a future fellow will register, but it is the only evidence PRL publishes on the question.

That coursework is real study, not an induction week. Every incoming fellow goes through a prescribed pre-PhD programme of two semesters before joining research, and also completes four projects as part of it (PRL Annual Report 2024-25).

• Fellowship Allowance: Junior Research Fellow (JRF): ₹37,000/- per month.
• Senior Research Fellow (SRF, after 2 years): ₹42,000/- per month (based on performance review).
• Platinum Jubilee Research Fellowship (ATAL): Selected meritorious JRFs may receive an additional ATAL fellowship of ₹40,000/- per month (for 3rd to 5th year).
• Ph.D. Registration: Fellows have the opportunity to register for a Ph.D. at an institute/university with an MoU with PRL.

What to prepare

Documents required

PRL's own fellowship page publishes no checklist of attachments. The only itemised list for this scheme sits on its myScheme record (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships), and one entry on it, recommendation letters, appears nowhere in PRL's call or its answers to applicants, so it is worth having but should not be assumed compulsory. What PRL does answer directly is the mismatch between a form built for graduates and an applicant who has not graduated yet.

An applicant without a postgraduate degree certificate uploads the last postgraduate semester mark sheet in its place, and selects the result awaited toggle where the form asks for the postgraduate qualification (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). If the university or institute does not appear in the form's list, the list carries an "OTHER" option under which the name is typed into a free-text box.

Proof of the national test score sits at the centre of the file, since it is the qualification PRL screens on first. Anyone waiting on a JEST result should note that the form has no edit facility after submission, so the score has to be in hand before applying (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

How to apply

The application runs through PRL's own recruitment portal, and the way to reach it is easy to miss: the apply link sits inside the JRF 2026 announcement block partway down the fellowship page rather than anywhere in the site navigation, which is why the route seems to appear and vanish with the round (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). Nothing in the scheme's own record points elsewhere, since myScheme gives the mode as online and carries no application link at all (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships), so anyone who starts from the myScheme entry has to come back to prl.res.in to find the form.

No fee is published anywhere on that page, and no payment step appears in the sequence it describes; the instructions it does carry are about the window and about the accuracy of what is typed in (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

Following your application afterwards works differently from the portals most Indian scholarship applicants are used to. There is no per-candidate status dashboard: PRL announces outcomes as dated notices published on its website, naming candidates by application identifier and name against the research division they have been placed in, which is why the application number on your acknowledgement is the thing to keep (PRL, JRF Final Selection 2025). Between the closing date and that notice, the JRF page and PRL's advertisement page are the only places an update appears.

How winners are picked

Selection process

There is no PRL entrance examination. Applications are screened, and whoever clears that screen is called to an interview PRL holds offline rather than over a video link (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)). Your national test score has already done the work an institutional written paper would otherwise do, which is why PRL insists on a valid score with an all India rank rather than running a paper of its own.

The selection decision rests on academic record, performance in the qualifying national examination, and the interview (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships). Preparation therefore points at the discipline chosen on the form and at the research topics listed under it, not at a syllabus PRL publishes for a test it does not conduct.

One published list shows what getting through that screen actually looks like. PRL's final selection notice for the 2025 round names 18 candidates across astronomy and astrophysics, atomic, molecular and optical physics, geosciences, planetary sciences, space and atmospheric sciences and theoretical physics, with one further candidate recommended to work at PRL on a DST-INSPIRE fellowship subject to a second-level selection (PRL, JRF Final Selection 2025).

Supervisors are not chosen at application. A fellow is matched to a guide after joining, on the basis of coursework performance and what the ongoing projects need (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships).

Fine print

Terms & conditions

Selection is conditional until the qualification is complete. A final-year MSc candidate who is selected must clear the final examination before joining, and the selection is cancelled if that does not happen (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)).

Holding another award does not shut the door. PRL confirms that a candidate already awarded a DST-INSPIRE fellowship for a PhD, or CSIR JRF, may apply through the same advertisement (PRL, Junior Research Fellowship (PRL Funded)), and its 2025 selection notice shows one candidate routed to PRL on the INSPIRE fellowship rather than the PRL fellowship. What follows is a placement at PRL funded from elsewhere, not two fellowship payments.

An offer is tied to its own cycle. The scheme's published answers state that offers are valid only for the specified period and that a selected candidate is expected to join within it, with no deferral to a later batch (myScheme, PRL Junior Research Fellowships).
