Overview

About PMSSTSSCNT

The Pre-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe Students Studying in Classes 9th and 10th is a centrally sponsored scheme that Assam delivers through the Directorate of Tribal Affairs (Plain), part of the state's Tribal Affairs Department. The funding comes as central assistance from the Government of India, and the state directorate handles sanction and disbursement to eligible Scheduled Tribe students in government and government-recognised schools across Assam.

The scheme focuses on the stage where many Scheduled Tribe children leave school, the move from upper primary into the secondary classes. By supporting families through classes 9 and 10, it aims to lower drop-out and keep students in school up to the board examination. The support is paid in cash: a recurring monthly scholarship across the academic year, an annual grant towards books, and additional allowances for students with disabilities.

It is meant for students who belong to a Scheduled Tribe and are enrolled full-time in class 9 or class 10 at a government or government-recognised school in Assam, subject to the scheme's family-income ceiling. The application is completed in the prescribed form and submitted through the head of the school, who scrutinises it and forwards it with a recommendation to the sanctioning authority; the award carries forward to class 10 once a student passes class 9.
