Opening And Maintenance Of Public School (Vidya Niketan) For Vimukta Jatis And Nomadic Tribes(OMPS)
Overview
About OMPS
Vidya Niketan is a public-school scheme that the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department of the Government of Maharashtra runs for children of Vimukta Jatis (de-notified tribes) and Nomadic Tribes. Rather than open the schools itself, the department backs registered voluntary organisations that set up and run a Vidya Niketan, and it meets their costs through grant-in-aid.
The aim is to widen schooling for communities that have long had limited access to it. The benefit is cash: the state releases grant-in-aid to the sanctioned organisation, which covers the running of the school so that eligible students can study without the burden falling on their families.
The scheme is meant for students from Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribe communities in Maharashtra. Since a Vidya Niketan is operated by a voluntary body on the state's behalf, both the organisation applying to run the school and the students it admits have to meet the department's conditions.
