About OAHR
Operation of Ashram Hostels is a state scheme run by the Tribal Area Development Department of the Government of Rajasthan. It supports Scheduled Tribe students who live in the ashram hostels the department operates, and it works through in-kind support rather than a cash transfer to the student.
The department covers the everyday cost of staying at these hostels. Residents get free accommodation and nutritious meals, together with study materials, uniforms and personal hygiene items. The aim is that the cost of boarding away from home does not end a tribal student's schooling.
It is meant for individual Scheduled Tribe students in Rajasthan who stay in these hostels, many of them from tribal areas where the nearest school is far from home. Residential schooling for Scheduled Tribes is a long-standing part of India's tribal welfare effort: the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, formed in 1999, funds education for tribal communities and residential models such as the Eklavya Model Residential Schools, while state departments like Rajasthan's operate the ashram hostels on the ground.

Who can apply
Eligibility criteria
| The applicant should be a native of Rajasthan. | |
| The applicant should belong to the Scheduled Tribe community. | |
| Scheduled Tribe students are eligible if there is no primary school within 1.5 km, no upper primary school within 3 km, and no secondary/higher secondary school within 5 km of their residence. | |
| The parents/guardians should not be an income tax payee. | |
| The applicant's family should not own more than 400 square yards of urban land. | |
| The applicant's family should not own more than 15 bighas of agricultural land. | |
| The student should pass the current academic year to continue enrollment in the next year. | |
| The student should be a resident of the same district in which the hostel application has been made. | |
| Notes | All new admissions will be made on the basis of merit. |
| Notes | Admission to hostels in specific tribal areas will be given only to tribal students belonging to the same area. |
| Notes | Re-admission in the next academic year will be granted only if the student passes the annual examination. |
