The Savitribai Phule Scholarship for V.J.N.T. and S.B.C. girl students studying in the 5th to 7th standard is a state scholarship run by the Social Justice and Special Assistance Department, Government of Maharashtra. It is meant for girls from the Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) and Special Backward Classes (SBC) during their upper-primary years.
The scheme's aim is to raise enrolment and cut the dropout rate among these girls while they are still in school. The benefit is a cash scholarship paid month by month across the academic year, and it is open to VJNT and SBC girls studying in classes 5 to 7 at government-recognised schools in Maharashtra.
The pay-out does not run through the family. The scheme is paperless, so a student or her parents do not file an application. Instead, the school headmaster forwards the list of eligible VJNT and SBC girls to the District Social Welfare Officer at the Zilla Parishad, who sanctions the scholarship.
