Opening and Maintenance of Boys and Girls Hostels(OMBGH)
Overview
About OMBGH
The Opening and Maintenance of Boys and Girls Hostels scheme is run by the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, Government of Puducherry. Under it, the department opens and runs residential hostels that give Scheduled Caste students free boarding and lodging while they study, so that the lack of a place to stay does not stand in the way of their education.
A resident receives free lodging and free boarding, a cash payment in lieu of two pairs of clothing, and conveyance charges for six journeys a year, three home and three back. The stated aim is to help Scheduled Caste students stay in education and to cut the risk of dropping out at the school and college stage, which weighs most on families who live far from an institution or cannot arrange accommodation on their own.
It is open to Scheduled Caste students who have been residents of the Union Territory of Puducherry for at least five years, and a hostel place is meant for those whose parent or guardian does not live within five kilometres of the hostel. Applications are made online through the Puducherry e-District portal or in person at the department office, which also administers the other student-welfare schemes for Scheduled Caste students in the territory.
