Overview

About CDS

The Cycle Distribution Scheme is a state welfare measure of the Madhya Pradesh government, run through its Tribal Welfare Department. It gives an eligible tribal girl student a cash grant equal to the cost of a bicycle, paid directly into her bank account rather than handed out as a physical cycle.

The aim is to keep Scheduled Tribe girls in school as they move into higher secondary, a stage where the nearest school is often in another village and the daily walk becomes a reason to drop out. The money lets a student arrange her own transport and cover that distance, so the benefit type here is straightforward cash support, not a fee waiver or a stipend spread over the year.

It is meant for girl students from Scheduled Tribe communities who are studying in Madhya Pradesh and live too far from their school to walk comfortably. Students usually apply through the school principal or the Assistant Commissioner of the Tribal Welfare Department in their district, and the District Collector sanctions the assistance. The exact distance, class and prior-benefit conditions that decide who qualifies are set out in the eligibility details.
