Overview

About CIWESM-AS

The Cash Incentive to Wards of ESM (Academic Scholarship) is a welfare scheme run by the Department of Sainik Welfare, Government of Puducherry. It gives a cash incentive to students who are the children of ex-servicemen, or of widows of ex-servicemen, in recognition of their academic performance. It sits alongside the other educational-assistance measures the department runs for ex-servicemen families in the union territory.

The department is Puducherry's arm of the national framework for ex-servicemen welfare. Policy is set by the Kendriya Sainik Board, which works under the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare in the Ministry of Defence, while delivery runs through the Rajya Sainik Boards and Zila Sainik Welfare offices across the states and union territories. In Puducherry the board was first constituted in 1965, and its office was redesignated the Department of Sainik Welfare in 1995.

As a defined ex-servicemen welfare benefit, the scheme is meant for ESM families rather than the general student population. The department sets the eligibility conditions, the rates and the number of wards it will support per family, so the exact terms are worth confirming with it directly before you apply.
