About IWAI-INTERNSHIP

The IWAI internship application form warns, on the very line where it asks for a project preference, that it may not always be possible to allocate the area of choice. It asks for three places of posting in order of preference on the line below, and the region-wise plan in the same notification is what those preferences run into. The Inland Waterways Authority of India plans for 10 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate or research interns in a year, and the largest block of them is deployed at the head office in Noida rather than at any river office. IWAI's internship policy also settles a question that is easy to get wrong until the offer arrives: the stipend of Rs 10,000 a month for undergraduates and Rs 20,000 for postgraduates is released after the term is over, not while it runs.

IWAI is a statutory body set up by an Act of Parliament in 1986, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and it takes interns both at its Noida headquarters and at regional offices across the country (IWAI internship page). Its mandate is to develop and regulate the inland waterways for shipping and navigation, and in April 2016 the Government of India declared 106 new National Waterways on top of the five that already existed, which is the workload the internship sits inside (IWAI internship policy 2024-25). An intern is not attached to a general policy desk. They are attached to a division doing a specific piece of that work.

The notification names the fields an intern can be routed into: marine engineering, hydrography, fairway development, river information systems, traffic and cargo handling, terminal planning and operations, vessel operations, navigation and vessel traffic management systems, river cruises, the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, capacity building, finance, administration, information technology for water transport, legal and human resources (IWAI internship policy 2024-25). Which of those are live in a given year depends on what IWAI's divisions have asked for, so the menu is real but it is not fixed.

Applications are read against that year's requirement rather than against a fixed calendar, because the policy states that the internship is available throughout the year based on IWAI's requirement. The current cycle is on record: IWAI's vacancies listing carries the circular for the internship programme (2026-27), published on 05-03-2026, with 31-03-2027 in the submitted-date column against the entry (IWAI vacancies). The three recruitment notices sitting above it on that listing carry the same column filled with a date a few weeks after their own publication, so the field there reads as a closing date rather than a date on which anything was filed.

The terms set out below are the ones IWAI notified on 21.03.2024 for the 2024-25 programme, the most recent internship policy it has published as readable text (IWAI internship policy 2024-25). Its circular for 2026-27 is posted on the vacancies page as a scan, so open that document for anything the current cycle has changed (IWAI vacancies).

The scheme has no annual examination-style deadline, because the policy makes the internship available throughout the year based on IWAI's requirement. The dates that matter are the ones on whichever notice is live, and IWAI publishes them on its vacancies page rather than on a scheme portal.

Both of the closed cycles on that table ran about four weeks from issue to closing, the head office one and the single-seat Patna one alike, while the current entry has stood on the listing since March 2026. Neither kind of notice is announced anywhere except IWAI's own site, so the practical step is to check the vacancies listing rather than wait for a circulated alert.

Eligibility criteria

The gate is the marks you earned at the stage below the one you are applying from. A candidate pursuing or holding a graduate or postgraduate course from a university or institution of national or international repute qualifies, provided a graduate applicant obtained at least 75% in the class 12 examination, a postgraduate applicant obtained 60% in the graduation degree, and a research scholar obtained at least 60% in the postgraduate degree (IWAI internship policy 2024-25).

That bar has moved, and older pages still carry the old one. The notification IWAI issued on 27/6/2017, which set the scheme up, required 80% in the class 12 examination from graduate applicants (IWAI notification dated 27/6/2017). The lower 75% bar is what the current published policy prints (IWAI internship policy 2024-25), and it is the one an applicant should measure against.

No discipline restriction appears anywhere in that clause, so a law, economics or management student is inside the wording exactly as an engineering student is, and the routing to a division happens later. Nor is there an age limit, a domicile condition or a family income test, which is what separates this from the scholarship schemes it is listed alongside.

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

Nowhere in the notification, or in the scheme record built from it, is there a list of who is barred. What functions as an exclusion is failure against a condition stated elsewhere in the same document. Missing the marks bar for your stage removes the application at scrutiny. An intern who does not complete the period stipulated in the offer is not issued a certificate at all, so leaving early costs the whole output of the term, not a proportionate share of it. IWAI can also end an ongoing internship by giving one month's notice where performance is not up to the mark (IWAI internship policy 2024-25).

Renewal conditions

There is nothing to renew. The published policy runs a term whose length is settled at application, closes it with a report and a certificate, and carries no clause for renewal, extension or a second term.

The scheme did once have one. IWAI's founding notification allowed an internship to be extended beyond its initial period by a maximum of six months, with the Chairperson's approval on the recommendation of the concerned Director, and at IWAI's sole discretion (IWAI notification dated 27/6/2017). No equivalent clause survives in the current policy, so an applicant who wants a longer stay should ask for the longer term at application rather than plan on stretching a short one.

Award & benefits

The stipend is paid on satisfactory completion of the internship, not month by month while it runs, and it is worked out from attendance rather than from the calendar. An intern earns remuneration equivalent to the number of days of attendance in the office against the total number of working days in that month, and the last month's remuneration is held back until the report or paper is submitted (IWAI internship policy 2024-25).

The certificate is the other half of the award, and it is conditional in a way the stipend is not. IWAI issues it in the format set out at Annexure-B of the policy, once the report or paper has been submitted and evaluated by a Director or Director-In-Charge level officer in the intern's own division. The Annexure-B format asks that officer to rate the performance on the report and to name the areas worked on, so the certificate carries a judgment rather than a bare attendance record.

Travel is the one cost IWAI absorbs beyond the stipend. An intern sent out on assigned work is reimbursed for travelling cost at the entitlement of a Technical Assistant at IWAI. Working space is provided at the office. Accommodation is not, and the intern brings their own laptop, which matters for anyone weighing a posting far from home against a stipend that arrives at the end.

• Remuneration: Stipend @ ₹ 10,000/- for Undergraduates and ₹ 20,000/- for Post Graduate/ Research Scholars per month will be payable on satisfactory completion of their internships.
• Note: Last month's remuneration shall be provided on submission of their Report/paper.
• Interns will be eligible for remuneration equivalent to the number of days of attendance in the office against the total number of working days in that month.
• Experience Certificate: A certificate regarding the successful completion of the Internship shall be issued by IWAI in the enclosed format in Annexure-B of the Scheme Guidelines.
• Note: The certificate will be issued upon the submission of their Report/paper and its evaluation by the Director/ Director-In Charge level officers in their concerned Division.
• Internship is neither a job nor any assurance for job in IWAI.
• No accommodation will be provided to interns.
• The internship may be terminated by IWAI by giving one month notice in case the performance of the candidate is not up to the mark.
• Interns not completing the requisite period as stipulated in their offer will not be issued with any certificate.

What to prepare

Documents required

The paperwork splits into two moments, and the wrong document at the wrong moment is wasted effort. What travels with the application is the filled Annexure-A proforma and a CV, which the scheme's own guidance treats as mandatory rather than optional. What is produced later, at the time of joining on selection, is the letter from the head of department or principal stating the applicant's status in the institution and giving a no objection for the internship period (IWAI internship policy 2024-25). There is nothing to gain from chasing a signed no objection before an offer exists.

Annexure-A asks for more than a CV repeats. It wants the Aadhaar number, a qualifications table with the institute, year of passing, marks and subject for each examination, projects already undertaken, the subject of specialisation, the project or area preferences, three places of posting in order of preference, the period of internship sought, and the names of two references from the present institute or the last one attended. It closes with a short statement of purpose of not more than 100 words and an authentication block that the institute or university signs and seals (IWAI internship policy 2024-25).

The declaration of secrecy and the closing report belong to the internship itself rather than to the selection. The declaration goes to the Authority before reporting, and the report or paper on the allotted subject, along with mandatory feedback to the concerned head of department, closes the term out.

How to apply

Applications go by post, in the prescribed format, to The Secretary, Inland Waterways Authority of India, A-13, Sector-1, Noida-201301, with the CV attached. The policy asks applicants to go through the IWAI website first and to name, in the application itself, the division and the areas of interest in order of preference, because that ordering is what the allocation to a division is worked from (IWAI internship policy 2024-25).

Head office is not the only door. A regional office that has a single seat to fill issues its own notice with its own address and its own closing time. The Patna regional office did exactly that for one undergraduate seat, asking for the Annexure-A application by registered post to its Gaighat address by 30.07.2021 up to 1700 hrs (IWAI Patna notice dated 01.07.2021). Anyone targeting a specific river office should watch that office's notices as well as the head office circular.

Following Up on a Posted Application

The offer is the only signal a posted application ever produces: IWAI runs no tracker for one and issues no acknowledgement number against it. The policy routes every application received to the Recruitment and Training Cell at IWAI, has it scrutinised by the head office or the respective directorate, and then informs the selected candidate to join at the designated location, which means a result reaches you as an offer or not at all. The only published channels for a follow-up are the signatory of the notification, the Assistant Secretary (Admn. and Estt.), and the vacancies listing itself, which carries a latest-update link against the internship entry (IWAI vacancies).

How winners are picked

Selection process

Selection is a scrutiny against a slot, not a competitive examination. Offers are sent to selected interns subject to the availability of slots for the undergraduate or postgraduate stream, the consent of the concerned division, and the approval of the Competent Authority, the term the same policy uses for the Chairman of IWAI. Where a particular domain draws heavy interest, IWAI reserves the right to fix the selection criteria, to limit the number of applicants called for a period, and to decide the mode of screening, and it retains the discretion to choose the most suitable candidate on ability, knowledge and qualifications (IWAI internship policy 2024-25). No merit list is published and no interview is promised.

The slot is the binding constraint, and it is distributed unevenly across the map, which is why the place preference on the form is worth thinking about rather than filling in by habit.

A postgraduate hoping for Goa is applying for a seat that the plan does not carry, and an undergraduate willing to take Guwahati is applying against a line with no undergraduate provision either. The four undergraduate places at Noida and the eight postgraduate places there are the deepest pools on the table.

Terms & conditions

An internship at IWAI is neither a job nor any assurance of a job at IWAI. The policy gives that its own numbered clause rather than leaving it to fine print (IWAI internship policy 2024-25).

Supervision is named and personal. An intern is attached to one officer at Director or Deputy Director level in the concerned division, while the head of the vertical, unit or division keeps the attendance record and the details of work supervision and is personally responsible for ensuring that the work agreed with the intern is satisfactorily completed. Since the stipend is computed from attendance days, that register is also the payroll record.

A declaration of secrecy is furnished before reporting, and one month's notice is what ends an internship early where performance is not up to the mark (IWAI internship policy 2024-25). That notice used to cut both ways: the 2017 notification gave the intern the same one month's notice to discontinue, and the current policy prints only IWAI's side of it (IWAI notification dated 27/6/2017). The policy can also be modified as IWAI's requirement changes, with the approval of the Chairman, which is why the year printed on a circular matters when comparing terms found on third-party pages.
