Overview

About SAS

The Study Abroad Scholarships scheme is run by the Tribal Welfare Department (the Tribal Affairs Department) of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. It was set up in 2003 to help Scheduled Tribe students from the state study at institutions abroad. Applications are received and sanctioned centrally, through the Commissioner of the Tribal Welfare Department at Bhopal, rather than at the district level.

The award is a cash benefit meant to meet the main costs of studying overseas. It covers the tuition charged by the foreign institution together with a living allowance and a contingency allowance for the duration of the approved course, paid according to the department's rules for that course.

It is aimed at Scheduled Tribe students of Madhya Pradesh who have secured admission to a postgraduate or research programme abroad, subject to the age, family-income and academic conditions the department sets. The benefit is limited to one member per family and can be drawn only once, so a limited number of candidates are supported each year.
