Overview

About SWS

The Student Welfare Scheme is run by the Tribal Welfare Department (Tribal Affairs Department) of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. It is a state welfare measure, in place since 1984, that gives cash assistance to economically weaker Scheduled Tribe students who hit an emergency during their schooling.

The purpose is narrow and practical. When a crisis such as a medical emergency or a death in the family strikes, a poor household often cannot absorb the cost, and a child's education is the first thing to stop. The scheme releases a one-time payment so that such a shock does not push a Scheduled Tribe student out of school.

It is meant for Scheduled Tribe students in Class 1 to Class 10 who are natives of Madhya Pradesh and studying at a government or approved school. The support is triggered by a specific contingency rather than paid out routinely, and the department, or the head of the institution, initiates it on the student's behalf, with the amount going to the student. A claim turns on both a qualifying emergency and the household's economic standing.
