About SAPGJAU

The Scheme for the Award of Scholarship for Post Graduate Students of Various Faculties of Junagadh Agricultural University pays a monthly sum to Master's and doctoral students already on the university's rolls. For a Ph.D. scholar it is a small sum next to SHODH, the state research scheme on the same university list, and it cannot be combined with that or any other award.

Who gets it, and who keeps it, turns on three rules more than on the rate: Gujarat domicile, a first-class qualifying degree, and a grade line every semester that sits above the line the university itself uses to keep a student enrolled.

JAU lists this award under the heading "University" on the scholarships page of the Directorate of Students' Welfare, as a PG Scholarship in two rows, one for the Master's degree course and one for the doctoral course, kept apart from the ICAR awards and the state and central schemes on the same page (Junagadh Agricultural University, scholarships). That page gives no amount, and neither does the current PG admission prospectus (PG admission prospectus 2026-27). The rates sit on the university's older, undated scholarships page: Rs 2,000 a month for a Master's student and Rs 3,000 a month for a doctoral scholar (JAU scholarships list, older site).

Mari Yojana, the state government's Gujarati scheme portal, run by the Directorate of Information under the Information and Broadcasting Department (Mari Yojana, About us), carries the same two monthly rates and describes the money as a JAU fellowship award for PG students, paid for 12 months of the year (Mari Yojana scheme directory). The portal gathers schemes from across the government's departments and files this one under the Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Cooperation Department, which under the portal's disclaimer maintains the entry's content itself (Mari Yojana, Disclaimer). That department is the nodal body; the university runs the award.

The award follows a JAU seat. Postgraduate admission at JAU runs through the common admission for Gujarat's state agricultural universities, where 70% of the intake is a state quota and the remaining 30% goes to candidates nominated by ICAR (PG admission prospectus 2026-27). The same prospectus lists JAU's Master's programmes at its Junagadh colleges as M.Sc. (Agri.), M.Sc. (Hort.), M.Tech. in agricultural engineering and technology, and an MBA in agri-business, with Ph.D. places at the colleges that hold intake in a discipline.

No fixed dates are published for this award; its calendar follows admission. PG admission is given only at the beginning of the odd semester, with key dates advertised on pg.gsauca.in by JAU's Registrar (PG admission prospectus 2026-27), and the academic year normally opens in July or August (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes).

Eligibility criteria

For a doctoral applicant, "first class" is the condition that shuts out students JAU has already admitted, because it sits above the bar for admission.

Under the common PG regulations of Gujarat's state agricultural universities, which JAU has applied since the 2022-23 academic year, a Master's OGPA of 7.00 to 7.99 is First Class and 8.00 and above is First Class with Distinction (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes; JAU notification and copy of the 2022 PG regulations). Doctoral admission asks for less: an OGPA of 6.50 for a general or EWS candidate and 6.00 for SEBC, ST, SC, PwD and sponsored candidates (PG admission prospectus 2026-27). A doctoral student admitted on a Master's OGPA between those two lines holds a seat but not this scholarship.

For a Master's applicant the test is a first class, or an equivalent grade or OGPA, in the bachelor's degree (myScheme record). The prospectus admits general and EWS graduates from an OGPA of 6.00, and SEBC, ST, SC, PwD and sponsored candidates from 5.50 (PG admission prospectus 2026-27). Neither document says which bachelor's OGPA counts as first class, so check the class your own university awarded before counting on the money.

Domicile is the second filter. The scheme is open only to students domiciled in Gujarat (myScheme record), while the admission rules let a non-domicile graduate of a Gujarat agricultural university take a state-quota seat if seats remain vacant (PG admission prospectus 2026-27). Such a student can hold a JAU seat without ever qualifying for this award. The claim is made as a newly admitted student, and JAU's online form keeps Fresh and Renewal applications apart (JAU scholarship application form).

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

The record bars in-service candidates and deputees. The admission prospectus adds the practical edge: a fresh PG student who joins service before submitting the thesis or project work has the registration cancelled automatically, so a job taken mid-course ends the seat and the scholarship together (PG admission prospectus 2026-27). University employees admitted as in-service trainees are a separate track in the regulations: they keep drawing their pay and allowances through the course, and may take a scholarship or fellowship only with the university's permission (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes).

The second exclusion sits in the scheme's FAQ rather than its list: the award cannot be drawn alongside any other scholarship, fellowship or financial assistance from a government, private or institutional source (myScheme record). On JAU's own list, that rules out pairing it with an ICAR award, SHODH or a post-matric award for SC or ST students (Junagadh Agricultural University, scholarships).

Renewal conditions

Renewal is checked semester by semester and turns on grades. The scheme's FAQ sets the line to keep the money at a CGPA of 7.0 with promotion to the next semester, and suspends payment below it until the student climbs back (myScheme record). That figure is the bottom of the First Class band, 7.00 to 7.99, in the common PG regulations, so in practice the award asks for a first-class record every semester, not only on entry. The university's own floor is lower: a student remains a regular enrolled student down to a CGPA of 6.50 and is placed on academic probation only below it (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes). Between 6.50 and 7.0, a student is in good standing with the university and unpaid by this scheme.

A failed course costs more than a dip in the average. The scheme's FAQ discontinues the award for a subject not cleared, with no reinstatement for the rest of the course (myScheme record), and the regulations close the obvious workaround: when a course is repeated, the revised grade replaces the original in the OGPA and CGPA for every purpose except the award of a scholarship or fellowship (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes).

The money also stops on the calendar. The award runs two years for a Master's and three for a Ph.D., and the scheme's FAQ rules out any extension (myScheme record), while the regulations give a fresh student up to 10 semesters to finish a Master's and up to fourteen to finish a Ph.D. (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes). A thesis that runs past two years, or three for a doctorate, is finished without the stipend. Continuing scholars file under the Renewal application type on JAU's online form, which also asks for the amount actually received the previous year (JAU scholarship application form).

The rate is set by level, and both levels are paid through the whole year rather than term time only.

Set against the fee bill, six monthly payments at the Master's rate of Rs 2,000 come to a little less than the Rs 12,300 in semester fees the prospectus sets for a male PG student, although Rs 200 of that is a transcript fee charged only in the final semester. A woman student with Indian citizenship is exempt from tuition and hostel room fees and pays Rs 5,300, which the same six payments cover more than twice over (PG admission prospectus 2026-27; JAU scholarships list, older site).

For a doctoral scholar the comparison that matters is SHODH, the state's research scheme, which JAU's form lists at Rs 15,000 a month for a Ph.D. (JAU scholarship application form). Because this award cannot sit beside another one, a scholar selected for SHODH gives this one up. The money does not arrive month by month: under Appendix-B of JAU's December 2020 scholarship notification, the Principal of the student's college pays it at the end of the semester, on a satisfactory progress report from the major guide (JAU notification, Appendix-B, on Mari Yojana).

The scheme's own list stops at a photograph and two marksheets. JAU's online form asks for more: the last examination and the board or university that held it, the month and year of passing, the percentage or OGPA, an OTP-verified mobile number, an e-mail address, date and place of birth, address, category, and the estimated scholarship amount for the academic year (JAU scholarship application form).

For a Ph.D. applicant, the "Post Graduate marksheet" is the Master's result that carries the OGPA measured against the first-class line, and under the current regulations the class itself is printed on the Master's degree certificate (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes). For a Master's applicant, the graduation marksheet does that job. The list names no domicile certificate even though domicile is a condition, so ask the college office what it accepts as proof.

How to apply

Two routes are on record, so ask your college office which one it is using this year. The myScheme record describes a paper route: an application on plain paper addressed to the Director, Junagadh Agricultural University, handed in with the documents to the Principal of your college (myScheme record).

JAU also runs an online Scholarship / Fellowship form. It opens with your college, then your course and semester, and then your name, picked from a list the form loads for that college and course, so it is built for students already enrolled at JAU (JAU scholarship application form). The scholarship-type menu carries no entry under this scheme's long title; the university's own awards appear as "Award of JAU Fellowship for UG/PG/PhD". The form cannot be sent until the mobile number is verified by OTP and the declaration is ticked, and in September 2026 the only academic year it offered was 2026-27.

Nothing online tracks this award. myScheme marks it as a non-DBT scheme with no online application link (myScheme record), and JAU's form page carries no status lookup, so the trail runs through people: the scholarship desk at your college, then the Directorate of Students' Welfare, whose stated duties include providing financial assistance to students through scholarships (JAU Directorate of Students' Welfare). For a form that will not submit or an OTP that does not arrive, the form itself names JAU's IT Cell on +91 285 2677487 (JAU scholarship application form).

How winners are picked

Selection process

Selection is on academic merit by a university committee of the Dean of Post Graduate Studies, the deans of the faculties, the Director of Students' Welfare and the Registrar (myScheme record). Ties are broken by reading grades backwards from the last semester of the qualifying degree, the 8th semester of the bachelor's for a Master's applicant and the 4th semester of the Master's for a Ph.D. applicant, so a strong final semester is what separates two equal CGPAs.

A first class makes a student eligible; it does not win the award. Appendix-B of the December 2020 notification fixes how many of these scholarships each faculty awards a year, in one row for the Master's degree and another for the Ph.D., so candidates compete on merit for their own faculty's places, and its Agri Business Management places are open only to students whose basic degree is in agriculture or an allied science (JAU notification, Appendix-B, on Mari Yojana). JAU's two scholarships pages do not repeat the table. Terms & conditions

The award leaves marks on the academic paperwork. A scholarship or fellowship holder submits five bound copies of the thesis instead of the usual four, to the major guide and on through the head of department to the dean of the faculty (Common Academic Regulations (2022-23) for PG programmes). The same regulations list withholding or withdrawing a scholarship or fellowship among the punishments for ragging.

The scheme's FAQ adds conduct and regular attendance as continuing conditions, with cancellation possible at any point for misconduct or for taking up another form of aid (myScheme record).
