Overview

About SDPVC

Sanctioning of Daisy Players to Visually Challenged is a state welfare scheme in Andhra Pradesh that gives visually challenged students an audio reading device, a Daisy player, free of cost. It is an in-kind benefit, so the student receives the equipment itself rather than a cash grant. The scheme is drawn up under the state's Action Plan for 2017-18.

The scheme is run by the Andhra Pradesh Differently Abled and Senior Citizens Assistance Corporation (APDASCAC), the state body that handles the welfare of persons with disabilities and distributes assistive aids such as Braille slates, touch phones and Daisy players. APDASCAC was set up in 1981 and works under the state department responsible for the welfare of differently abled persons.

A Daisy player is an audio device built for people who cannot read print. It plays back recorded books and study material in the Daisy format, so a visually challenged student can listen to lessons and move through them by chapter or page. The purpose is to keep visual impairment from standing in the way of a student's education.

It is meant for visually challenged students in Andhra Pradesh who are studying between Class 9 and degree level. The conditions on residence, age and family income are set by the corporation and are applied to each applicant, and the device is sanctioned once.
