About SPNMUK
The S.P. Nautiyal Museum, also called the S.P. Nautiyal Sangrahalaya, is the geological museum of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Its displays cover the geology of the Himalaya through maps, charts, rock, mineral and fossil samples, and scale models. Among the exhibits are a relief model of the Himalaya, a Geological Clock that sets out the geological time scale, and paintings on environmental impact.
The museum is run by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, that came into being in 1968 and studies the geology, seismology and natural hazards of the Himalayan region. Its purpose is educational: the collections, video films and awareness exhibits are used to explain Himalayan and general geology to a non-specialist audience. The benefit is in kind rather than a cash grant, so what you receive is access to the exhibits and the learning material around them.
The audience is broad. The institute records student visitors from universities and local schools alongside the general public, and describes the museum as popular with school children in particular. It keeps special open days tied to National Science Day on 28 February, National Technology Day on 11 May, its Foundation Day on 29 June and Founders Day on 23 October, and it runs science quiz and essay competitions during Science Week for students from Doon valley schools.
