About NAT

Forty-eight school teachers, drawn from 27 States, 7 Union Territories and 6 organisations of the central government, were named for the National Teachers Awards conferred at Vigyan Bhawan on 5 September 2026 (Ministry of Education, PIB). The portal fixes a ceiling above that number: a maximum of 154 shortlisted teachers are called to the national jury in any year (National Teachers Awards portal). Almost everything that decides an application happens in the district and state committees long before the jury sees a name.

The scheme dates to 1958 and is executed under the overall supervision of the Ministry of Education, with the Department of School Education and Literacy running the school stream (National Teachers Awards portal). It is not a scholarship, there is no income test, and nothing is disbursed by transfer to a bank account. A teacher nominates themselves, is scored against a published matrix by committees at district and state level, and if shortlisted, presents to an independent jury over video conference before the Union Education Minister approves the final list. Whoever wins is handed the award at a national function on Teachers' Day, by the President or, as the portal words the alternative, the Vice President.

The school award is easily confused with the other honours that carry the same name, and the cleanest way to tell them apart is the portal. This one runs on nationalawardstoteachers.education.gov.in; the higher education and polytechnic stream is nominated on the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal, and it opened its 2026 window on 26 May, three weeks before the school portal opened, though both closed on 20 July (PIB). The school stream drew 48 awardees in 2026, 26 of them men and 22 women, all selected through a three-stage process at district, state and national level (PIB); the higher education and polytechnic stream drew 21, conferred at the same Vigyan Bhawan ceremony (PIB).

The conferment date does not move: the ceremony is held on Teachers' Day, 5 September, with a rehearsal the day before. Everything in front of it does move, and 2026 is a clean example. The Ministry published a full timeline on 25 June 2026 with final submission closing on 13 July (PIB); the portal now records a revised one that added a fresh-registration extension, pushed final submission out to 20 July and shifted every downstream stage by roughly a week (National Teachers Awards portal). The release announcing the awardees confirms the revised close, recording self-nominations as invited from 15.06.2026 to 20.07.2026 (PIB). A teacher who worked to the June note and stopped there gave up a week of drafting time.

Eligibility criteria

The two conditions that eliminate most interested teachers are service length and employment status. Only regular teachers and Heads of Schools with a minimum of ten years of service qualify, and the school has to be a recognised primary, middle, high or higher secondary school in one of the four categories the guidelines list, which run from state government, local body and aided schools through Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, Atomic Energy Education Society schools and Eklavya Model Residential Schools to CBSE and CISCE affiliated schools (Guidelines, National Teachers Awards).

A teacher who retired part-way through the award year is not automatically out. The guidelines allow consideration where the teacher served at least four months of the calendar year, meaning up to 30 April of the year the award relates to, and meets every other condition (Guidelines).

Clearing those conditions is only half the test, because the number of nominations that may travel upward is fixed before anyone applies. Annexure-III prints the whole allotment: 126 nominations from the states, 10 from the Union Territories and 18 from the central organisations (Guidelines). No state may exceed its own line in that table, which runs from 6 for the larger states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu down to 3 for Goa, Sikkim and the north-eastern states, and 1 or 2 for most Union Territories. Two teachers in the same district with comparable records are competing for the three slots their district committee is allowed to forward, not for a national pool.

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

The disqualifiers are about role and conduct rather than classroom results. Educational administrators, inspectors of education and the staff of training institutes are outside the award, as are contractual teachers and Shiksha Mitras, and a teacher or headmaster who has indulged in tuitions is not eligible (Guidelines).

There is a further exposure worth reading before submitting. Every applicant gives an undertaking that the information submitted is true to the best of their knowledge, and the guidelines add that if anything is later found untrue the applicant is liable to disciplinary action (Guidelines). The district committee does not take the form on trust either: it forms verification teams to physically verify the facts an applicant has claimed, and it forwards a vigilance clearance certificate alongside each of the three names it sends up.

Renewal conditions

Nothing carries over into a second year. The honour is conferred once, for the cycle in which the national jury clears the name, and the guidelines set out no continuation, no top-up and no stated bar on self-nominating again in a later year (Guidelines). What repeats is the cycle itself, with the Annexure-III allotment governing how many names each state, Union Territory and organisation may put up in every round.

No 2026 document states what an awardee physically receives. The last time the Ministry set the components out in full was the release on the 2024 conferment: each award carries a certificate of merit, a cash award of Rs 50,000 and a silver medal (PIB, Ministry of Education).

Read that table as the last officially stated figure, not as a confirmed current one. The 2026 announcement names the awardees and the ceremony without repeating any amount (PIB), the published guidelines and the portal carry no cash figure anywhere, and the scheme record on myScheme classifies the benefit as in kind rather than as a direct benefit transfer (myScheme).

Travel is the one benefit the guidelines themselves commit to. TA and DA for the awardees and their companions are paid by the Ministry of Education, at an entitlement notionally equivalent to a Group A officer at entry level in the central government (Guidelines). The Ministry also said short documentaries on each awardee's work would be showcased at the 2026 event, and the ceremony was carried live on Doordarshan and the SWAYAM PRABHA channels (PIB).

What to prepare

Documents required

The portfolio is the application. Every applicant submits one online along with the entry form, and the guidelines describe what belongs in it as supporting material of the working kind: documents, tools, reports of activities, field visits, photographs, audio and video (Guidelines). What that means in practice is that the evidence attached against each criterion is what the district committee scores, so a claim of innovative classroom work with nothing behind it earns nothing.

Two practical points sit in the instruction manual rather than in the scheme record. Where a PDF refuses to upload, the portal accepts a Google Drive link holding the supporting documents instead, and the upload page carries a link to the instructions for preparing that drive folder (Instruction Manual for Online Self-nomination). Separately, a certificate from the controlling officer is needed only for the objective criteria tied to verifiable school records, such as regular attendance, in-service training, and work done to raise enrolment and cut dropouts.

Shortlisted teachers then prepare a second, quite different set of material for the jury: an application letter to upload, and the names of up to five students where the teacher's interaction produced a stated outcome, such as a student retained in school despite adverse circumstances, one now pursuing higher studies, or one recognised or awarded in the subject the teacher taught. Those details are filled in on the portal itself, using the same login credentials (Instruction Manual).

How to apply

Registration comes first and it decides the route the application takes. The teacher picks their organisation from a dropdown, with government, aided and private schools under the States and Union Territories in one option and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti as their own, then receives an activation link by email from helpdesk-nat@gov.in and confirms the mobile number by OTP. That registered mobile number becomes the login ID (Instruction Manual).

The form is then filled in sections that save independently: personal details, school details, service record with a separate row for every school worked in and every kind of service, objective criteria, and criteria based on performance. The manual's home screen marks each form with a tick when it has been saved and a cross when it has not, which is the working checklist of what is still missing (Instruction Manual). There is no paper route: the portal's FAQ states the process is completely online through the official portal and that late submissions are not accepted (FAQs).

Tracking a nomination. A successful submission produces a confirmation message or email carrying an application ID, and the portal publishes exactly one way to check status afterwards: log back in and open the profile dashboard on the official website (FAQs). No separate status page and no other tracking facility is offered. Shortlisting arrives as the intimation the published timeline schedules for candidates called to the jury video conference (National Teachers Awards portal). Preview and print the application before submitting, because the manual is blunt that no further changes are permitted once final submission is done (Instruction Manual).

Selection process

Scoring is weighted almost entirely towards demonstrated work. The objective criteria carry a weightage of 10 out of 100 and the criteria based on performance carry 90, split across three heads of 30 marks each, with every sub-head inside a head capped at 7.5 marks (Guidelines).

The District Selection Committee is chaired by the District Education Officer, with a representative of the state or Union Territory government and one reputed academician nominated by the District Collector. It verifies, marks, certifies that marks were awarded after due verification, and forwards exactly three names upward with a vigilance clearance certificate for each; in exceptional circumstances it may add at most one name suo-moto from among outstanding teachers, including special educators and differently abled teachers or heads of schools (Guidelines). The State Selection Committee, chaired by the Principal Secretary or Secretary of the state education department with a Union government nominee and the SCERT director on it, re-verifies the marks and cuts the list to the state's Annexure-III number. Teachers in Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, CBSE and CISCE schools and the other central organisations travel a parallel route, through a Regional Selection Committee and then an Organization Selection Committee that works to the same three-name and allotment rules.

The last stage is a five-member independent jury. All five must have extensive experience in aspects related to school education, at least two may be drawn from government, working or retired, but at or above the level of Joint Secretary, and the chair is whichever of them the Union Education Minister selects (Guidelines). Candidates are assessed on an application letter and a presentation, judged on things like whether an innovation addressed a felt need in the school and whether the change the teacher sought was sustainable; the jury's recommendations then go to the Education Minister for acceptance and final approval.

Terms & conditions

The undertaking of truthfulness binds the applicant after the award, not only during scrutiny, and the portal locks an application at final submission, so an error in the service record cannot be corrected once it is in (Guidelines). Committee membership is meant to turn over: the guidelines ask that names of committee members be changed every year to the extent possible, and they repeat that instruction for the district, state and organisation committees alike. The Ministry of Education also undertakes to bear the entire expenditure for development and maintenance of the portal, and to coordinate with States and Union Territories on technical and operational issues during data entry (Guidelines). One convention governs how the outcome is published: the awardee list released each year is not arranged in any particular order of merit (PIB).
