National Centre for Earth Science Studies Internship Scheme(NCESSIS)
Overview
About NCESSIS
The National Centre for Earth Science Studies Internship Scheme is run by the National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and part of its Earth System Science Organisation. NCESS traces back to the Centre for Earth Science Studies, set up in 1978, and was reconstituted as a national centre in 2014. Its research spans solid earth, environmental hydrology, marine science and atmospheric science.
The scheme places students inside these active research groups rather than paying out a cash award. Its benefit is in kind: a supervised internship or training stint with an assigned mentor, access to NCESS laboratories and ongoing projects, and a certificate on submission of the final report. The aim is to let students familiarise themselves with the different branches of earth sciences and, where possible, take up research in them.
It is aimed at school and college students who want practical exposure to a working earth science laboratory, with the formal internship, training and dissertation tracks pitched at university-level applicants. NCESS opens applications during two fixed windows each year, in February and September, rather than on a rolling basis, so timing your application to those periods matters. The precise eligibility conditions differ by track and are worth checking before you apply.
