About NCESSIS

An NCESS internship is decided on the form alone, for a research group you do not get to pick. The National Centre for Earth Science Studies, the Ministry of Earth Sciences institute at Akkulam in Thiruvananthapuram, opens an online form twice a year, allots each accepted student a supervisor and a project title, and publishes the outcome as a list on its own website. No stipend is attached to any of it. What the place offers instead is bench time on instruments a university department rarely has on site, from a Q-ICPMS line and an electron probe micro analyser to a high altitude cloud physics observatory at Munnar.

The institute is older than its current name. It began in 1978 as the Centre for Earth Science Studies, founded by Prof. C. Karunakaran, and was brought under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and re-envisioned as NCESS in 2014, according to the institute's own account of its foundation. Anything the institute published before that year carries the CESS name, and it refers to this same Akkulam campus.

Everything an intern does sits inside one of four research groups: the Solid Earth Research Group, the Environmental Hydrology Group, the Marine Science Group and the Atmospheric Science Group. The split is real rather than administrative. Solid Earth works on the geodynamic evolution of Archean cratons, Proterozoic mobile belts and the Western Ghats, and on lithospheric structure across shear zones in southern India, as the Solid Earth Research Group's page sets out. Environmental Hydrology runs critical zone studies of Peninsular India, river hydrology, and work on the water potential of natural springs. Marine Science models coastal ocean dynamics off the west coast and carries the national Submarine Groundwater Discharge network. Atmospheric Science studies cloud microphysics, thunderstorms and lightning over the Western Ghats.

The scheme description on myScheme reads as though schools are included, and that is worth untangling before you apply. NCESS does run a route for school students, but it is not this one: it is the open day held each April to coincide with Earth Day, when the laboratories are opened for half a day, per the NCESS opportunities page. The internship, training and dissertation route is a university-level programme with its own eligibility clause, and school students do not appear in it.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

The eligibility clause is written in semesters, not in years or in marks, and that is the tell: NCESS wants a student who is inside a degree and can bring a curricular project along, not a graduate looking for post-degree experience. Read the semester bands against the length of each course and something else falls out. Every postgraduate route the clause names opens at a mid-degree semester and closes one semester before the degree does, which puts the final semester of a two-year, three-year or five-year integrated course outside the window. The only undergraduate route is B.Sc. final year.

Nothing in that clause asks for a recommendation letter in a prescribed format, a supervisor's prior consent, or a minimum aggregate. The general guidelines add only one further condition that behaves like eligibility: a student must be able to spend at least eight weeks continuously at NCESS, and a candidature that cannot meet that is not considered at all.

The institute publishes the accepted list, so the real profile of a selected cohort is checkable rather than guessed at. The list for the February round names students from Banaras Hindu University, IIT Kharagpur, NIT Warangal, IISER Pune, IIEST Shibpur, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Delhi University, Pondicherry University, Osmania University, Kerala Agricultural University and several Kerala government colleges, on courses running from M.Sc. Geology and M.Sc. Geophysics through M.Sc. Meteorology, M.Sc. Environmental Science and Remote Sensing and GIS applications, in the selected list NCESS put up for that round.

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

Two bars are stated outright, and both are about commitment rather than credentials. A candidate who was selected for training in an earlier round and did not turn up is told not to apply again. And a student who cannot complete eight continuous weeks at the centre is excluded, which quietly rules out anyone whose university project window is shorter than that or split across two terms.

A third exclusion is procedural. The online form is live only inside the two announced windows, and NCESS states plainly that late applications will not be entertained. The guidelines describe no paper route and no late window: outside those two months the Apply Online button on that page is the only door, and it is shut.

Renewal conditions

Nothing here runs long enough to renew. Each round is a fresh pass through the same form, and the one rule NCESS does carry across rounds runs in the opposite direction: a student who was selected for training earlier and did not join is told not to apply again, per the general guidelines on the opportunities page.

What you get

Award & benefits

The benefit is a certificate and the laboratory access that precedes it. The scheme record states in its benefits clause that no financial aid or stipend is provided to the interns, so there is no money in this at any point. Nor is money asked for: there is no fee for carrying out project work at the centre. Accommodation and transport are not provided either, and with no stipend to set against them, getting to Thiruvananthapuram and living there for eight weeks is the whole cost of the internship.

The certificate is not automatic on completion of eight weeks. It is issued only after the compulsory end-of-training talk, once the report has been signed by the supervisor and submitted to the visiting students committee, and a copy has been deposited in the NCESS library for future reference.

What varies most between two interns at the same centre is which instruments they touch, and that follows from the group they are allotted to.

• Note: No financial aid /stipend will be provided by this Directorate to the interns.

What to prepare

Documents required

The document list is short because most of the verification happens on arrival rather than at the form. Certificates and marksheets of educational qualifications go in with the application.

The document that actually decides whether you can start is the printout of your own submitted application form, signed by the head of your department with the official seal, carried to the centre on the day you report. NCESS says selected candidates must bring it, and the guidelines set no route for producing it later.

Step by step

How to apply

Applications go through an online form reached from the Apply Online button on the NCESS opportunities page, and its availability is the whole constraint. The form is active from 01 February to 28 February, and again from 01 September to 30 September, every year, and NCESS closes it outside those dates. The round open as this page was last checked, in the first week of September 2026, is the second one: the notice inviting applications for the September 2026 intake sits on the NCESS front page and the form behind it closes on 30 September. The myScheme record lists the application mode as online but carries no application URL and no open or close date of its own, so the NCESS notification is the binding calendar.

Tracking the application is where this scheme differs from portal-run internships, and it catches people out. NCESS sends no personal email to shortlisted candidates. The list approved by the Director is put on the NCESS website in the first week of May for the February round and the first week of December for the September round, and it names the allotted supervisor or group and the title of the internship, training or dissertation alongside each student. You check that page; nothing checks you. The most recent list stays up on the opportunities page as a PDF, which is also how you can see the shape of a cohort before applying.

Once your name is on it, the clock is short. An offer has to be accepted within 7 to 10 working days, and if no reply reaches NCESS in that time the place is passed to the waiting list.

How winners are picked

Selection process

Selection is done by the visiting students committee and approved by the Director of NCESS. The committee reads the application and the applicant's stated research interests, then allots a supervisor. The guidelines are explicit that neither side gets a say: a supervisor may not pick a student and a student may not pick a supervisor. Writing to a scientist in advance, which the Ministry of Earth Sciences centre at NCPOR actively encourages its applicants to do, does nothing for an NCESS application.

NCESS also reserves the right not to consider any or all requests, and to close or discontinue the programme without giving reasons, so a round can pass without an offer for reasons that will not be explained.

Fine print

Terms & conditions

Read the conditions before you commit a semester to this, because several of them govern when you are allowed on the campus at all.

Field work is limited to day trips with no overnight stay, and even those need prior approval from the visiting students committee and the Director. Visiting students are allowed on campus on working days only; a weekend or a holiday needs approval from both the supervisor and the group head in advance. At the end of the period, every trainee and dissertation student has to give a talk of 15 minutes, split as a 10 minute presentation and 5 minutes of discussion, arranged online or offline by the committee once you tell them you have finished.

Anything you publish afterwards is not yours alone to send out. Any publication or communication to a journal arising from the work needs the consent of both the guide and NCESS, per the conditions listed on the opportunities page.
