Overview

About KVPY

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) was a national fellowship in the basic sciences, funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Government of India and administered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. It began in 1999 and worked as a merit fellowship rather than a general scholarship, selecting students through a written aptitude test followed by an interview.

The programme was set up to encourage academically strong students to take up research careers in the pure sciences. It admitted candidates at three points in their studies: Class 11 (stream SA), Class 12 (stream SX), and the first year of a BSc or integrated MSc (stream SB). Selected fellows received a monthly fellowship along with an annual contingency grant, paid through their undergraduate and pre-PhD years for as long as they continued in a basic-science course.

KVPY is no longer open to new applicants. In 2022 the Department of Science and Technology decided to fold it into its INSPIRE programme, and the KVPY aptitude test has not been conducted since. Students already holding a KVPY fellowship continued to receive it under DST norms, while fresh selection now runs through INSPIRE.
