Junior Hostel (Scheduled Tribes)(JHST)
Overview
About JHST
The Junior Hostel (Scheduled Tribes) scheme provides residential accommodation for Scheduled Tribe students in Madhya Pradesh who are studying in classes 6 to 8. Students admitted to a junior hostel receive free lodging together with mess and boarding, so the support reaches them in kind rather than as a cash transfer.
The scheme is run by the Tribal Affairs Department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, which operates residential hostels for tribal students across the state and manages admission to them. The aim is to keep tribal children in school through these years by taking on the cost of staying away from home, a cost that often falls on families in areas where a school is not within daily reach.
It is meant for individual students from Scheduled Tribe communities enrolled in classes 6, 7 and 8 in the state. The benefit is limited to accommodation and mess, and a place is obtained through the department's hostel admission process, with the detailed conditions set by the department.
