Overview

About IS-DEA

The Internship Scheme of the Department of Economic Affairs is run by the department, part of the Union Ministry of Finance. It places postgraduate and PhD students inside the department for a short spell so they can see how the government frames macro-economic policy and carries out economic research.

Interns are attached to the kind of work the department itself handles, such as macro-economic management, capital markets, monetary and fiscal policy, foreign investment, and debt management. The stated aim is to familiarise them with how economic policy is formulated at the centre, and to have them study a specific economic problem and suggest solutions. Alongside that exposure, interns receive a token remuneration, payable on satisfactory completion of the internship and submission of the report, plus logistics support such as office space and a computer with internet access for the length of the placement.

Eligibility is limited to students enrolled in a postgraduate or doctoral programme in relevant fields, and only applicants from qualifying institutions are considered. A placement runs for three to five months. Both the eligibility conditions and the token payment are set for each cycle, so read the current notice on the department's website before applying.
