About IGSTCIF-PDIF

The Post Doctoral Industrial Fellowship is the senior of the two awards inside the IGSTC Industrial Fellowship programme, and it pays a fresh Indian PhD to spend six to twelve months working inside a German company or industrial research institute. What it does not do is find that company for you. The IGSTC Industrial Fellowships Guidelines 2026 put the choice of host and the acceptance from that host squarely on the applicant, and an application without the host's consent letter is not a complete application.

That single condition sets the real timetable. The consent letter is an attachment at submission, not something a shortlisted candidate is asked to produce later, so the German host has to be lined up before the window opens rather than chased inside it. The Indo-German Science and Technology Centre (IGSTC) is a bilateral body of the Department of Science and Technology and Germany's federal research ministry, and it runs this award as a capacity-building instrument rather than a placement service.

The programme was launched on 14th June 2021 at IGSTC's 11th Foundation Day by the then Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, with the stated purpose of pushing young Indian researchers towards applied research through exposure to German industrial settings, and with support capped at a maximum of one year (Department of Science and Technology). The post-doctoral tier is the one built for people who have finished the degree and are deciding whether their next move is a lab or a product team.

Important dates

The scheme record publishes no open or close date because the window moves each year. IGSTC advertises the call once a year on its own website, and the recent cycles have kept to a consistent shape.

Two cycles show the pattern holding and also show that the closing date is not always the last word. The 2025 call ran from 1st February 2025 to 31st March 2025. The 2026 call ran on the same dates and was then extended to 02nd April 2026, 12:00 Noon IST, an extension IGSTC posted on the call page itself rather than anywhere else. The 2024 call closed on 31st March 2024.

As of early September 2026 the call page still displays that closed 2026 window and carries no announcement of a 2027 round. The guidelines commit IGSTC only to advertising the fellowship call once a year through its own website, so that page, not a listing site, is the one to watch. The gap between calls is the time to secure the host consent letter, because that is the item that cannot be produced quickly once a window opens.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

Read the eligibility test as three filters stacked on each other: the degree, the clock, and the host.

The degree has to be a PhD in science or engineering awarded by a research institution or university in India, and the applicant has to be an Indian citizen. An Indian citizen holding or pursuing a PhD from a foreign university is not eligible, which the IGSTC Industrial Fellowships FAQs answer with a flat no. Thesis submitted but degree not yet awarded is an acceptable state at application, though the same FAQ page says the degree should be awarded by the time the fellowship starts if the candidate is selected.

The clock is where two versions of the rule are in circulation, and the gap between them is a year of a career. The 2026 guidelines, the 2026 FAQs and the call texts for 2024, 2025 and 2026 all set the window at within 2 years of the application deadline, and the FAQ applies the same figure to candidates who already hold a regular position. The wider figure belongs to the 2023 cycle: the archived guidelines page and the Call 2023 page still say within 3 years, and that is the wording aggregator listings and scheme directories have carried forward. If the degree was awarded more than 2 years before the deadline, the older wording is not the rule the application will be assessed against. Eligibility is judged as on the submission deadline of the call, not on the date the form is filled.

The age ceiling is 35 years. The FAQ page states the upper age limits for the two tiers as 28 and 35 years respectively, so a candidate whose degree has already been awarded belongs in the post-doctoral tier and cannot fall back to the PhD-stage award. Researchers who are between positions or returning from a career break are explicitly kept inside the eligible set rather than screened out, and for them the two-reference-letter route replaces the institutional NOC.

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

IGSTC publishes no separate list of exclusions for this fellowship, so what actually disqualifies a PDIF application has to be assembled from the eligibility text and the FAQs. A foreign PhD is out. A second helping is out: the FAQ allows repeat applications but permits one person to avail the fellowship only once. Holding another recognised doctoral or post-doctoral fellowship is allowed only where that other fellowship imposes no restriction of its own, which makes the other funder's rulebook part of your eligibility check. And the grant is closed-ended by head: the guidelines limit it to the monthly fellowship, the round-trip airfare, visa fees and medical or travel insurance, so any cost outside that list stays with the fellow.

Renewal conditions

There is nothing to renew. The guidelines state that a request for extension in the duration of the fellowship shall not be entertained, and the FAQ repeats that the tenure cannot be extended beyond its awarded duration. The practical consequence is that the tenure you write into your activity plan is the tenure you live with, so a plan that needs longer than the awarded duration should be scoped down before submission rather than argued about afterwards.

The financial package is fixed by head and capped by the guidelines. Because the placement is in Germany, IGSTC states these limits in euro.

Two details in that table change what actually reaches you. The fellowship is paid for the actual duration in Germany, so a shortened stay shortens the money. And the grant is disbursed in Indian rupees into the Indian bank account of the awardee or the parent institution, not into a German account in euro, which means the conversion happens at IGSTC's end and the German rent gets paid out of what lands in India. Budget the first month in Germany on the assumption that you are funding it before the first disbursal clears.

What to prepare

Documents required

The paperwork splits by whether you are attached to an Indian institution right now. If you are, the file needs an NOC from the head of that institution on IGSTC's prescribed format plus a recommendation letter from your current mentor. If you are not, the post-doctoral tier is the only one that offers an alternative: the 2026 guidelines let an unaffiliated PDIF applicant submit two letters of reference instead, and specify that they must come from established researchers in the field.

The host consent letter carries more weight than its length suggests. The current guidelines ask for it to include a brief of the proposed direction and duration of work, so a two-line courtesy note from a German group leader does not meet the requirement. Education proofs go in reverse chronological order, and date of birth is proved by a passport or Aadhaar scan.

How to apply

Applications are accepted only through the IGSTC applicant portal; the guidelines say submissions by other mechanisms will not be accepted, which rules out email and post.

Register on the portal with your name spelled exactly as it appears on your documents, verify the address from the confirmation email, then select the Industrial Fellowship programme from the programmes page. The form then walks through Basic Details, Personal Information, Parent Organization Details, Education Details, Employment Details, Achievements, Host Details, Project Details and Attachments before the Review and Submit step, and each page has its own Save and Next (IGSTC applicant portal user guide). A proposal can be saved at any stage and sits in the dashboard in Draft form until it is submitted.

Submission is one-way. The same user guide states that no further changes can be made once the proposal is submitted, so the Review step is the last chance to fix an attachment.

How to track it. Tracking happens inside the same dashboard the application was filed from. After final submission the portal returns you there and shows the status of the application next to View and Download buttons, and the user guide states that the PDF of the submitted proposal stays available in the dashboard for view or download. That PDF is the copy of record for what IGSTC received. Queries the dashboard cannot answer go to industrial.fellowship@igstc.org.

The activity plan is the part reviewers actually read closely. The guidelines ask for objective, execution strategy and expected outcome, and the 2026 version adds a requirement to spell out how the proposed work links to, and contributes to, the applicant's completed or ongoing doctoral and post-doctoral work.

How winners are picked

Selection process

A Scientific Committee evaluates applications on merit and compliance with the eligibility conditions, and its decision is final and binding. IGSTC publishes what the committee weighs: relevance to STEM, complementarity of expertise, degree of innovation and originality, scope, feasibility, work plan, quality of the collaboration, expected outcome, and the future potential of the research and the collaboration. Read as a list, it says the German placement has to be a research fit, not a destination.

Timing is stated rather than left open. The FAQ page puts the evaluation at approximately 8 to 12 weeks after the submission deadline, which places the result in the middle of the calendar year for a call that closes in March.

The published awardee lists are the best available guide to what clears that bar. IGSTC names 11 post-doctoral fellows in its Industrial Fellows 2025 list and 10 in Industrial Fellows 2024, with each fellow's parent institution, German host and topic printed alongside. The IITs recur most often across those two lists, but the rest of the names are spread wider than the reputation of the award suggests: BITS Pilani, TIFR Hyderabad, IISc Bangalore, CSIR and ICMR laboratories, ABV-IIITM Gwalior, NIT Raipur and an agricultural university in Akola all appear. On the German side the hosts are mostly Fraunhofer institutes, Airbus units and BASF, with smaller firms such as LIONEX GmbH, Testia GmbH and Skeleton Technologies GmbH alongside them.

Terms & conditions

Once selected, the awardee has to start the visit within 3 months of the award letter, and the fellowship runs under German rules from day one: the guidelines state that the awardee shall abide by the conduct, rules and regulations of the German host organisation and of the country, and that IGSTC will not be responsible for any violation of them.

Leaving early is permitted but not silent. Either the awardee or the host mentor must inform IGSTC in writing if the fellowship is discontinued before the tenure ends, and IGSTC then terminates the award and still requires a completion report to close it out. For a fellowship that runs its full course, a detailed completion report endorsed by the host mentor, in the prescribed format and with representative photographs, is due within 4 weeks of finishing.

The acknowledgement clause outlives the tenure. Every online or printed document, communication, report, publication and thesis reporting work that came out of the fellowship has to name the IGSTC Industrial Fellowship, with no end date attached to that obligation.
