Indian Agricultural Research Institute - Scholarship(IARIS)

There is no open or close date for this scholarship, because there is no separate application. The dates that bind you are the entrance dates and the counselling schedule.

Eligibility here is settled at admission rather than tested separately. The scheme record covers the degree qualifications and the nationality rule; what it leaves out is the set of conditions a student has to keep true after joining.

Two of those matter more than the rest. A student holding the IARI scholarship cannot apply for or accept any other scholarship, fellowship, award or employment without the Dean's prior approval, and a student already drawing something else has to surrender it before accepting this one, both under Chapter 15. The whole-time clause in the scheme record is not decorative: it is enforced through those two paragraphs.

International students are outside it entirely. IARI states on its own international students page that it does not provide fellowship or scholarship support for international students, and points them instead to the Study in India route and to government-sponsored programmes such as the Netaji Subhas-ICAR International Fellowship. That sits consistently with the nationality clause in the scheme's own terms.

Chapter 15 never uses the word exclusion. It writes the disqualifications as a termination clause instead, which means the risk at Pusa is mostly of losing the money later rather than being refused it at the start.

Four things end or block the payment, all of them from Chapter 15:

• Drawing another scholarship or fellowship at the same time, or taking outside employment, without the Dean's approval.
• Leaving the course before completing it without the Dean's prior approval.
• Falling off the Post Graduate School rolls, finishing the study, or reaching the date the sanction expires, whichever comes first.
• A finding by the Dean that the fellow has been negligent in the work or is guilty of unbecoming conduct, which can end the scholarship with or without notice.

One more disqualification sits outside that chapter and catches returning students. A candidate who has already availed the IARI or ICAR scholarship once is not eligible for it again, a line the Post Graduate School printed in its doctoral Information Bulletin for the 2018-19 intake. A second degree at Pusa does not come with a second scholarship.

Renewal here turns on one number in your third-trimester grade sheet. The award runs for one academic year from the date of joining or the start of the academic year, whichever is later, and is then renewed for one more year for an M.Sc. student and two more for a Ph.D. student, subject to the grade point average.

The number that decides it is 6.50 out of 10.00 at the end of the third trimester. A student below that stops drawing the scholarship; below 6.00 out of 10.00 the problem is larger, because that is the bar for staying on the Post Graduate School rolls at all, per Chapter 15.

An extension beyond the normal tenure is a written request, not a renewal. It goes to the Dean through the student's Chairperson and the Professor of the division, on the prescribed proforma, and the Dean is the final authority on granting it.

The rate is fixed by degree level, and the monthly figure absorbs the fees. Chapter 15 states that the scholarship is inclusive of all fees and other charges of the teaching institution, which is the part students miss when they compare it with an outside fellowship that leaves tuition to be paid separately.

The contingent grant is a separate line, spent on experimental material, books, the thesis and study tours, and only on what the Chairperson or Professor concerned recommends. It is worth reading the rates next to the ICAR-PG Scholarship, because the two are commonly mistaken for each other.

One rate is worth checking before you budget on it. IARI's own doctoral admission bulletin values the IARI scholarship at Rs 13,125 a month for three years, with a contingent grant of Rs 10,000 a year and against a surety bond, in the Information Bulletin published for the 2018-19 intake. The scheme record below carries the lower senior figure, so ask the Graduate School which rate is in force for your batch rather than treating either number as settled.

There is one interlock between those two rows that is easy to miss and expensive to discover late. A graduate of a 10+2+3 programme admitted at IARI on the ICAR-PG Scholarship is paid no fellowship during the first year, while the remedial courses are completed, under the AIEEA (PG)-2026 bulletin. The institute's own rule fills exactly that gap: a student who has taken the introductory courses on agriculture in the first year at IARI is given the Institute scholarship for one year in addition to the normal provisions.

In-service and departmental students are treated on a different scale. Where a candidate joins on study leave or deputation and is already drawing a study, halting or deputation allowance on top of full leave salary, the scholarship is adjusted so that the total additional benefit is capped at Rs 3,000 a month, with the contingent grant paid on top of that, under Chapter 15.

Three smaller conditions travel with the money, all from Chapter 15: the Institute pays no provident fund benefit to a fellow, a licence fee is payable if the Institute provides residential accommodation, and the last full month's stipend is held back until the Professor certifies that a copy of the thesis has been received for the Dean.

The document list in the scheme record is the admission list, collected before you join. The paperwork that actually releases the money each month is different and shorter.

Payment starts on receipt of two certificates in the proforma the Post Graduate School circulates: a written undertaking by the student to complete the study and research work assigned by the research guide, and a certificate that the student is not drawing any other scholarship or fellowship. Alongside them the fellow submits a Plan of Post Graduate Work and an Outline of Research Work to the Dean for approval, recommended by the advisory committee, the Professor and the head of the discipline.

You apply for the seat, not for the scholarship. Registration for the ICAR entrance examinations, AIEEA (PG) for master's programmes and AICE-JRF/SRF for doctoral programmes, opens on the National Testing Agency portal, and the bulletin published there is also where the scholarship and fellowship guidelines sit. For the 2025-26 session the ICAR public notice dated 08.05.2025 kept the window open from 06.05.2025 to 05.06.2025, which is the shape of the window to watch for each year.

After the result, choice filling and online counselling decide both the seat and the ICAR-PG Scholarship. Only then does the institute's own award come into play, and only then do the two payment certificates above matter.

Tracking is where the two payment routes separate, and Pusa is where the split was made visible. ICAR moved its scholarship and fellowship payments onto the National Scholarship Portal with direct benefit transfer at ICAR-IARI itself, releasing Rs 21.35 crore to more than 6,000 agriculture students on the day, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare release of 10 August 2026. Anything routed that way is followed on the portal itself, which carries Application Status and Track Your Payment as separate student links and lists an NSP helpdesk and a PFMS helpdesk side by side.

Chapter 15 describes no portal at all for the institute's own junior and senior scholarship. What it does fix is the payer and the trigger: the Graduate School releases the money for the period of your residence, against attendance marked in your division and against the two certificates the Post Graduate School collects. So a missing month is a question for the Graduate School office first, and for a portal helpdesk only if your award was one of the ICAR ones routed through NSP.

Two authorities decide, in sequence. The award is made by the Dean and Joint Director (Education) on the advice of the Standing Committee on Scholarships, Financial Assistance and Academic Progress, and the scheme record says that committee weighs merit at admission first and performance at the Post Graduate School afterwards.

What "merit at admission" means is the entrance rank. The Post Graduate School's own guidelines score doctoral admission under the open-competition stream at 70% for the written entrance, 20% for academic attainments from the 10th standard to the terminal degree and 10% for the interview, in Chapter 6. That split was written for an entrance the Institute conducted itself, and ICAR has since entrusted the conduct of these examinations, and the award of scholarships and fellowships, to the National Testing Agency from 2019 onwards, so read the current bulletin for the weighting that applies to your cycle. The ICAR-PG Scholarship on the other track is awarded only after online counselling is completed, per the AIEEA (PG)-2026 bulletin.

After that the committee stops looking at your entrance rank and starts looking at your grade sheet. The third-trimester review is the point where the scholarship is re-earned.

Residence is a payment condition, not a lifestyle note. The scholarship is paid for the period the recipient is resident at the Post Graduate School, up to the date of the final viva-voce, provided the student continues to live in the Post Graduate Hostel and marks attendance in the concerned division.

The rest of the conditions describe a full-time research relationship. The fellow works under a recognised research guide and is under the administrative control of the Dean. An outside award cannot be applied for during the currency of the scholarship without the Dean's permission, and a fellow selected for one is released only after completing the study, on a written undertaking.

One provision cuts in the student's favour: applications for external scholarships may be forwarded for students who have completed not more than one year as IARI fellows, per Chapter 15. Two obligations outlive the money. Financial assistance from IARI has to be acknowledged in the thesis, and the fellow reports to the Dean the post taken up once the scholarship ends.
