Overview
About GIFTMRC
The Government Institute for the Mentally Retarded is a residential institution in Chennai run by the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. It operates at Tambaram Sanatorium on the southern edge of the city and works with children who have an intellectual disability.
Support here is given in kind rather than as cash. The institute provides special education and vocational training alongside food, uniforms, boarding, medicine and lodging, and it trains children in the skills of daily living. Education at the institute is provided free.
Admission is intended for children with an intellectual disability, and families apply through the District Differently Abled Welfare Officer for Chengalpattu or the Project Officer at the institute in Tambaram. As a state-run residential facility, it is one of the few government institutions of its kind in Tamil Nadu.
