Overview

About ELSHRWCD

The Education Loan Scheme is run by the Haryana Women Development Corporation (HWDC), a state undertaking that sits under the Women and Child Development Department of the Government of Haryana. It is aimed at female students from Haryana, and works as an interest subsidy layered on top of a regular bank education loan rather than as a loan the corporation itself issues.

Under the scheme, HWDC pays a subsidy of 5% simple interest against the bank's lending rate, so the student carries only the balance. If a bank charges, say, 9.5% on an education loan, the corporation covers 5 percentage points and the borrower services the rest. The stated purpose is to ease the interest burden on girls and their families as they pursue graduate, postgraduate or doctoral study, whether in India or abroad.

Eligibility is built around Haryana domicile. The corporation states that girls who are Haryana residents, or daughters of Haryana government employees, may apply once the bank's own education-loan criteria are met, and it records no income, caste or creed condition on the subsidy. HWDC has run the scheme since 2007, making it one of the corporation's longer-standing supports for women pursuing higher education in the state.
