Book Allowance to the Wards of Ex-Servicemen/Widows (Sainik Welfare)(BAWESMW-SW)
Overview
About BAWESMW-SW
The Book Allowance to the Wards of Ex-Servicemen/Widows is a welfare scheme run by the Department of Sainik Welfare in Puducherry. The department sits within the Union Territory administration and carries out policy set by the Rajya Sainik Board (Puducherry), the apex body for the resettlement, rehabilitation and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families. That board began in 1965 as the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Board and was renamed the Rajya Sainik Board (Puducherry) in 1976; the department itself dates from 1995, when the board's office was redesignated as the Department of Sainik Welfare.
The scheme gives a cash allowance towards the purchase of books to students who are the children of ex-servicemen, or of widows of ex-servicemen. The benefit is meant for this single expense rather than for tuition, hostel or living costs, which the department supports through separate educational-assistance schemes.
To be considered, the family has to be registered with the Department of Sainik Welfare, and the ward has to be a student in a recognised institution. The department sets the rates, the number of wards it will cover per family and the situations in which a student does not qualify, so the exact terms are worth confirming with it directly before you apply.
