Overview

About ADTWIP

Most students who hear about this Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department award assume it rewards an overall top score. It does not. The prize is decided one subject at a time, and it is decided separately inside each of the three communities the department covers, so a Plus Two candidate who came first in Accountancy is in the running on that paper alone, whatever their aggregate. The department's own awards note is where that rule is written down, and it is the source that puts a count of papers behind the money.

This is a one time cash prize for a single subject in the Class 10 and Plus Two public examinations, not a scholarship that pays through a course. The department's awards note sets it out as a state level award: at Plus Two, one girl or one boy from each of the Adi Dravidar, Tribal and Adi Dravidar converted to Christianity categories who secures the first mark in each of 25 subjects, which comes to 75 students, and at Class 10 the same rule over 5 subjects, which comes to 15 students (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare).

The Government of Tamil Nadu's scheme directory carries the same two rates inside the scheme's own title, Rs 2,000 for the Plus Two examination and Rs 1,000 for the Class 10 examination, and records the sanctioning route as the Director of Adi Dravidar Welfare, Chennai-5, working through the District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officer (Tamil Nadu scheme directory).

The size of the population behind that award explains why the department pays for subject toppers and not only for aggregate toppers. Adi Dravidar communities make up 20.01 percent of Tamil Nadu and Scheduled Tribes 1.17 percent, and the 2011 census recorded Adi Dravidar literacy at 73.26 percent against 80.09 percent for the general population (Citizen Charter, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department).

Calendar

Important dates

No calendar is published. The scheme directory leaves both the validity period and the introduction date blank and attaches no order or guideline file, and the scheme record carries neither an opening nor a closing date (Tamil Nadu scheme directory). What fixes the timing is the result: the prize follows the first mark in a public examination subject, so nothing can be settled until the Class 10 and Plus Two results are out and the district office works backwards from that list.

The department's 2025-26 citizen charter does not list this award among the education schemes it details (Citizen Charter, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department). Treat the published rates as the last stated position and confirm the year's position with the district officer before counting on it.

Who can apply

Eligibility criteria

The qualifying event is a subject rank. Passing the Class 10 or Plus Two examination only puts a student in the room; taking the first mark in one of its subjects is what wins the money, and the department attaches no earnings ceiling and no age band to that test (Tamil Nadu scheme directory).

The mark is the test, and the pool matters more than the score. Because the award note counts one student for each subject in each of the three categories, an Adi Dravidar candidate is measured against other Adi Dravidar candidates in that subject rather than against the highest scorer in the state (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare). A Tribal student and a converted Christian Adi Dravidar student each have their own place in the same subject.

The beneficiary should be a Student.
The beneficiary should be a resident of Tamil Nadu.
The beneficiary should belong to the Adi Dravidar/Tribal/Adi Dravidar converted to Christianity community.
The beneficiary must have passed the 10th or Plus 2 examination.

Who cannot apply

Exclusions

The scheme record publishes no exclusion list. The cap does the same work: only the first mark in a subject is paid, one name per community per subject, so the second highest mark in that subject receives nothing under this head (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare).

Continuation

Renewal conditions

There is nothing to renew. The prize attaches to one examination and is paid once, and the award note sets no continuing study condition against it, which is how it differs from the department's multi year awards in the same document. The Bright Student Award runs at Rs 1,600 in the first year and Rs 2,000 a year for five more, and the Chief Minister's Merit Award pays Rs 3,000 a year for 5 years, both of them only while the student keeps studying (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare).

What you get

Award & benefits

The rate depends on the examination, not on the subject or on the margin.

ExaminationSubjects countedPrize per subjectStudents awarded a year
Plus Two25Rs 2,00075
Class 105Rs 1,00015

The subject prize is the smaller half of the state level award. The same note pays the three leading overall positions Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 at Plus Two and Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000 at Class 10, to one girl and one boy from each community (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare). A student who takes a subject prize is being paid for one paper; a student who takes a position prize is being paid for the whole examination.

How the money reaches the student is not published. The scheme record classifies the benefit as cash and does not carry a direct benefit transfer flag, and neither the department's award note nor the state scheme directory says whether the amount is credited to a bank account or handed over at a district function (myScheme record for the scheme).

  • For plus 2 Examination: ₹2,000/-. - For 10th Examination: ₹1,000/-.

What to prepare

Documents required

The list on the record is short because the decisive evidence already sits with the government. The public examination mark statement is what identifies the winner, and the community certificate is what places the student in one of the three pools rather than in a single open pool. The income certificate appears with a condition attached, which is consistent with a scheme directory entry that leaves the income field blank (Tamil Nadu scheme directory). Keep the community certificate and the mark statement together, since those two are the pair that decide both the pool and the rank.

Proof of identity (Aadhar card or any other document as directed by the authority).
Caste certificate (Adi Dravidar/ Tribal community).
Income certificate (if applicable).
Marksheets of the 10th/Plus 2 examination.
Any other documents (if required).

Step by step

How to apply

The department does not run an application for this prize at all. The scheme directory records the way to avail it as the Director of Adi Dravidar Welfare, Chennai-5, through the District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officer, and the scheme record lists the application mode as offline with no application link (Tamil Nadu scheme directory).

That makes the school the first door rather than the last. For the department's companion public examination awards, the same award note routes nominations to the Director of Adi Dravidar Welfare through the educational institutions, so the headmaster or the class teacher holding the subject wise mark list is the person to raise it with before the district office (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare).

Tracking is a phone call and not a status page. The department's published website list names ssp.tn.gov.in for its education scholarship schemes, tnadw.in for the directorate and nallosai.tn.gov.in for hostel management, and the Tribal Welfare directorate lists tnadtwscholarship.tn.gov.in for scholarships; none of them is named as the channel for a prize the record keeps offline, and the same charter lists all 38 District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officers with a CUG mobile number and an email address, most of them with an office landline as well (Citizen Charter, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department). So chase both the sanction and the payment at the District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officer's desk, with 1800 599 7638, the number the directorate publishes against ADW Scholarship, as the fallback (Directorate of Tribal Welfare).

How winners are picked

Selection process

Selection is arithmetic rather than assessment. The rule in the award note is the first mark in the subject, read off the Class 10 and Plus Two public examination results, one student from each community for each subject, which fixes the count at 75 awards at Plus Two and 15 at Class 10 however many students sit the papers (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare).

No percentage floor is published for it, and that is unusual for this department. Its Prize Money Award for degree, post graduate and professional students requires 60 percent and above, and the ad hoc merit grant listed by the district administration applies the same 60 percent test at Class 10 and Class 12 (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare, Nagapattinam District, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare). Here a first mark wins whatever it is.

Fine print

Terms & conditions

The record publishes no terms and conditions block. Two limits are built into the award instead of being written down as conditions: the count is capped at one student per subject per community, and the money is settled against a single examination (Awards and Incentive, Directorate of Tribal Welfare). Nothing in the published record makes the prize conditional on the winner continuing into the next class, which is the clause the department does write into its longer running awards.

Contact

The sanctioning authority is the Director of Adi Dravidar Welfare, Chennai-5, and the working office is the District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officer for the student's own district (Tamil Nadu scheme directory). The Directorate of Tribal Welfare at Chennai 600 005 answers on 044-28516689 and at dir.dtw@tn.gov.in, gives 044-28589855 for Adi Dravidar Welfare and 1800 599 7638 for ADW Scholarship (Directorate of Tribal Welfare). The department's citizen charter carries the same detail one district at a time, a mobile number and an email address for each of the 38 District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officers and an office landline for most of them (Citizen Charter, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department).
