Overview

About TKGTHE

The Tool Kit Grant for Traditional Handicrafts Experts is a Kerala welfare scheme run by the Backward Classes Development Department. Within the department, the Director administers it through the Regional Deputy Directors. The support is composite: it pairs a short spell of skill training with a grant toward the tools and equipment an artisan needs, rather than a single cash transfer.

The scheme is meant to raise the productivity and competitiveness of traditional craftsmen from the Other Backward Classes, so that they can turn out quality goods, earn more, and build steady self-employment that improves their living conditions. The training covers the use of modern machinery and equipment and runs for up to three months. The tool kit then puts that equipment in the artisan's own workshop.

It is meant for individual OBC craftsmen in Kerala, including communities with long handicraft traditions such as the Viswakarma, Padmasaliya and Chekkala. The department fixes who qualifies and how much each grant is worth, and applicants are judged against those conditions rather than an automatic entitlement.
