Overview

About SPUAC

The Student Program Under AcSIR is a route into doctoral study in the Earth sciences, delivered through the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR). AcSIR is an Institution of National Importance that grants doctoral and post-doctoral degrees, and it works in association with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Its stated aim is high-quality research and leadership development in the Earth sciences through PhD-level education.

In Uttarakhand, the AcSIR network includes the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) in Dehradun, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, that has been running since 1968. WIHG offers doctoral education through AcSIR, and its research covers Himalayan mountain-building, seismogenesis, geodynamics, climate and tectonics, and natural-hazard assessment. That is the geoscience setting a student in the state would train in.

The support here is in kind rather than a cash award. The program opens doctoral research opportunities in the Earth sciences to postgraduate students in the geosciences, so its natural audience is master's-degree holders in relevant fields who want to build a research career at an AcSIR institute.
