Overview

About SSJ

The Sports Scholarship is a state welfare programme of the Government of Jharkhand, run by its Department of Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, Minority and Backward Class Welfare. It supports Scheduled Tribe student-athletes in the state, from the middle-school stage through college, who take part in organised sports. Implementation is handled through the District Welfare Office, which coordinates with schools, colleges and local administrations.

The purpose is to encourage sports participation and back promising Scheduled Tribe students so that talent is not lost for want of funds or equipment. The support is composite. It combines annual scholarships for student-athletes, additional incentives for those who gain recognition at the national or international level, travel and daily-allowance support for players attending state and national events, sports materials such as hockey sticks, rackets, archery equipment, tracksuits and shoes, and awards for strong performances at district and state competitions.

Eligibility is narrow. You must be a Scheduled Tribe student who is a resident of Jharkhand, studying in a middle school, high school or college, and actively competing at the state or national level. Applicants from families below the poverty line are given priority for both sports materials and financial help. The scheme runs offline, with applications made at the District Welfare Office against proofs of residence, caste, income and sports participation.
