Overview

About STS

The Scholarship for Transgender Students is a state scheme run by the Social Justice Department, Government of Kerala. It provides scholarships to transgender students studying in State Government, Government-aided and Self-Financing schools, and its stated aim is to bring the marginalised transgender community into the mainstream of society.

The benefit is cash, paid as monthly financial assistance for ten months in a year. The amount is tiered by the stage of study, so a student in the higher secondary or college years receives a different rate from one in the school years. The scheme covers a wide span, from Class 7 onwards through Plus One and Plus Two, and on to diploma, degree, post-graduate and professional courses.

The scheme is open to transgender students, and there is no income ceiling. A self-declaration affidavit confirming that the applicant is transgender is required. Applications are forwarded through the head of the educational institution to the concerned District Social Justice Officer.

The Social Justice Department is Kerala's nodal agency for social welfare, headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, and it works through a dedicated Transgender Cell alongside its wider programmes for persons with disabilities, the elderly and other marginalised groups.
