Overview

About SSYSEB

Saraswati Sadhana Yojana is a Gujarat state scheme run by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. It gives a free bicycle to girls from socially and educationally backward classes who are studying in Class 9 at government and grant-in-aid schools across the state. The benefit is in kind, a cycle rather than a cash transfer.

The purpose is to keep girls in school through the secondary years. A bicycle gives a student a dependable way to reach a school that may be some distance from home, and the department frames the scheme as a way to reduce dropout among girls from these communities and support their move into higher classes. Secondary reporting dates the scheme to 2019.

It is meant for a specific group: girls in the socially and educationally backward category, enrolled in Class 9 at a government or grant-in-aid school in Gujarat, whose family income falls within the department's limits. There is no self-application. The head of the school draws up the list of eligible students and uploads it through the Digital Gujarat portal, after which the district social welfare office verifies each case.
